I'm starting my first "real" corporate, salaried job next week. What are things I should know ahead of time?
>>34493619Shitmaxx on corporate time.
Dont' stand out, just change jobs when you want a raise
>>344936191. Nobody will remember the overtime and extra effort you put in to do your job extra well. It's not like extra credit that you get paid back when you are struggling. You will get shat on anyway.2. Coworkers are not your friends. You must assume everything you tell them will be passed around in the office as rumors3. Nobody at work is happy for you when you get a raise or some benefit like extra home office days. They will just get jealous and vindictive because they didn't get it. So avoid bringing it up.4. HR exists to protect "the company" (meaning the managers), not you. Don't tell them about your personal problems. It will be used against you. Try to avoid talking to HR people in general. Just smile and be polite when you meet them in the halls5. The best way to get a raise is to switch companies. It's stupid, but that's just how managers work. They would rather hire someone new for more money than give decent money to the people they already have.6. The company is not "a family". Just watch how quickly people get shunned and forgotten when they quit or get fired.
>>34493619Everything will feel urgent even though you know it's pointless bullshit. Corporate will bullshit you with "core values" and "mission statements", talk about work life balance and other trite shit. Every other person if not more will be tired and jaded, if not miserable. Sitting in a cube all day is bad for you no matter how much mental gymnastics you do. Sweating your ass off sucks, so does sitting all fucking day. Maybe your job will require some, any, movement. That helps a lot but if not it will wear on you.Oh, and get ready for the gay 1 on 1s, team meetings where some brown noser never shuts up, the annual goals and your performance reviews. Maybe you're an eager beaver and you'll love it, the rest of us just wish our manager would fuck off.
>>34493619Sign up for gym!Make sure to have a hobby or two that isn't work and involves other people! even volunteering counts. don't isolate.
>>34493619Don’t say or do anything that is considered inappropriate or offensive at work. This includes browsing the offensive content at work. Don’t have offensive or obnoxious ringtones on your phone and then have it go off every day at random times.
>>34498973nigga nigga nigga song on the work phone it is!
Do the work you're asked for well and on time but do not push yourself more than you'd be comfortable with if they suddenly asked for "emergency" tasks. Always add extra days to deadlines, can you make it in half a day? No you can't, it'll be done in 2, if it's something only you know how to do add one more, just make sure that it becomes a standard because you will be asked to shit work faster some days, so you need their idea of faster to be within your comfortDo not give up you fucking breaks for more work unless it'll keep you from leaving work on timeBe amicable with the IT guys and you'll find out what is and isn't allowed to do on your work stations, a chill IT guy will ignore if you put YouTube all day to listen to something while working but will throw you under the buss the moment he sees you downloading something Always respond to emails when you complete a task or if there is something preventing you from doing so, just make sure it's written and sent, you'll need the evidence when other departments try to pin oversights on you to save their own skin
>>34493619Managing corporate politics and being a good communicator will go a long way. Make sure to avoid getting involved in anyone's drama or bullshit. Susan and Jimmy are apparently having an affair outside of work? You didn't see it and you don't know.Be friendly but like that other anon said, don't treat anyone as too close of a friend and expect that anything you say won't be kept private. For younger people, in the office, one of the hardest parts of dealing with them is a lack of communication, so if you get an email or have a project, try to keep everyone relatively in the loop on your progress. Even if it's just "Confirming I've received your email, I should be able to have this done by Thursday at 3" is helpful, instead of letting someone sit in the dark about whether or not you saw their request and if it'll get done by their deadline.
>>34498973Never get drunk infront of these people. Also, they're not your friends. You have/will make friends outside of work.
>>34493619Don't ask questions about it but silently observe the power dynamics. Getting on good terms with the guy the boss hates is a waste of time or counterproductive. Brown-nosing will just embarrass you but impressing the guy the boss listens to might pay off.>>34502051>a chill IT guy will ignore if you put YouTube all day to listen to something while workingIt's not the 00s, just do your bullshit on your unlimited data plan on your phone.
