I happen to have experience in the field of translation and I can already tell you it will take you years to do, particularly because Japanese translation is not a common career like with other language pairs (I'm assuming either Spanish or BR Portuguese since you mentioned South America, those two pairs are uncommon and I heavily doubt you got a Spanish/Portuguese to Japanese Translation career in any university nearby, which would make things easier and take you between 4 to 6 years like any other standard university career).I would not be surprised in the slightest if it takes you 10 years, maybe even more, considering you have to learn the language yet, and you have to manage to "get the certifications", as you put it.
