I've met my current uni friends after talking to one of the members randomly by mere happenstance and she introducing me to 'em. There is also anothe girl who just thought I looked friendly and introduced herself to me, this was around the middle of the year a couple of years ago after losing a previous group of friends. Definetly possible. If I could make any suggestion, make it look like an accident or like you'rr asking for something/need something if you're too shy. "Oh hey, sorry, do you have some notes from this and that class? I need to check something real quick." And try to start conversation.

if you don't attempt to make friends, you will just be another anonymous person in the course and will be forgotten. That, or people will just assume you are stuck up and walled-off and avoid you.

thats literally all you have to do. Just strike a quick conversation "hey, what do you think of this chapter so far? It's pretty interesting right?" or, "I don't really know anyone here, were you always attending this semester?". This time in your life is the best time to network, so dont waste it.
