I'm pic related anon. I'm doing a lot of unpaid overtime (officially 9-5 job but often 70hrs a week) to meet very short timelines. I'm overloaded with work on a team with more than twice as many project mangers as programmers.I feel stuck in this job because I don't have enough experience with the tech stacks most employers are looking for. Most of my experience is with niche proprietary tech doing very mundane tasks. However, on occasion I'm asked to solve a technical problem within 2-3 days because our sales team sold something to a client we don't have, or when our vendor's solutions had bugs/limitations, purchased by more senior people in the company without our input. Here's a copy of my resume. I've applied to around 200 or so job postings in the past few months but haven't heard back for an interview.https://i.postimg.cc/rmh2dHv2/anon-resume.png
>>34521811Sorry anon I'm not whitecollar and weld stuff together for money, but it seems absolutely insane to me that someone with such an impressive resume should have any issues finding work, especially with as wide specialties as you have.Meanwhile we (auto repair) are literally at the point of hiring anyone that knows a ratchet from a hammer and isn't so drunk that they're a danger to themselves. There are no blue collar workers any more in my area, just a veritable sea of soft-handed IT technicians.I don't know what you earn doing that, except that it's probably more than I do. I work 37 hours a week, come in 9, leave at 5 on the dot and none of my work comes home with me. My mortgage is probably 1/5 of your rent, and though I live in a low earnings area I still make close to what a GP doctor does here.It would be a massive upheaval, but if I were you paddling against the stream like that, I'd say fuck it, develop a skill and vacate the rat race.
>>34521811I always thought McGill kids were cool and gay. Wish I went there. Nice resume though, from formatting perspective it looks good, although if I had to nitpick it, it may be a bit too long on the first entry. HR and ATs is a bitch. Have you tried working with a career services advisor? Do you speak with recruiters directly? Do you apply on company websites directly as opposed to linkedin and indeed?
>>34521828>but it seems absolutely insane to me that someone with such an impressive resumedesu if I walk you through what the bullet points mean, you'd realize none of the things on that resume are impressive. It's just technical jargon and keywords to get passed the ATS filters. A real software engineer would look at this resume and think it's a joke. The only difficult part of my job is in trying to find problems with the code and fix it in a short amount of time.>Meanwhile we (auto repair) are literally at the point of hiring anyone that knows a ratchet from a hammer and isn't so drunk that they're a danger to themselves. Do you require any certifications (licensed mechanic - 310S takes 4 years to complete here) or years of experience? I just had a look at the job postings for auto mechanic positions in this area and most require significant investment in time to enter the field. My dad was a train diesel mechanic (and a really good one). Around 10 years ago, I tried to get a job as a janitor or apprentice mechanic at different train companies in Canada and didn't get passed the HR phone interview (no experience as a jannie let alone the apprentice position). I suspect the area I'm in is competitive for every field. I remember applying to some auto body shops too.I didn't do any internships in uni so I tried to get my foot in the door in tech by trying to work my way up. However every job requires 5+ years of work history with the exact same kind of technologies their company is using. >I don't know what you earn doing that, except that it's probably more than I do.I make around 40/hr leafbucks on a fixed salary. Any overtime (usually more than 25hrs/week) is unpaid.
>>34521856>Do you apply on company websitesI find postings on indeed/linkedin but I go to the company's career page and fill in the application from.>Do you speak with recruiters directly?I've only been contacted by 3 recruiters on linkedin in the past year. I passed them my resume but haven't heard back. I've also applied to some job postings posted by technical recruiting agencies.>Have you tried working with a career services advisor?I haven't. I was thinking of reaching out to a professional resume writing service, but I probably need more help than that.
>>34521811>how do I get a job I can tolerate?>tech jobImpossible. It's just too stressing, you just can't. It doesn't matter if you love coding, and if you code since you were eight years old, people will just try to make your life miserable, when in reality the job should be very simple. >I've applied to around 200 or soNot enough.>https://i.postimg.cc/rmh2dHv2/anon-resume.pngWhere's the description of the ABC company 3? Why the other experiences have so many bullet points and this one has none? You have to reduce the lengthy description of the others and fix this one. Also, remove these fake metrics from your resume, tech recruiters can tell from miles away.I'm sorry OP, the tech industry sucks, I hate my job too, I hate my fucking life so much, there's not a single day I don't fantasize about dying, the anxiety is eating me away.
>>34522089>I find postings on indeed/linkedin but I go to the company's career page and fill in the application from. Most of these jobs are fake BTW and you'll never hear from them
>>34522089>I've only been contacted by 3 recruiters on linkedin in the past year. I passed them my resume but haven't heard bacI forgot to ask this as well, do you have a portfolio? What are your projects about?
>>34522103>Also, remove these fake metrics from your resumeOk I'll remove them or make them sound less bullshit, but for what it's worth the metrics are all real anon. Have a look at the demo on their website. This has 35k records and it takes a few seconds to search the list for every letter you type in. The page was crashing when we used this for the entire list https://support.askia.com/hc/en-us/articles/208037915-AutoCompletehttps://demo.askia.com/WebProd/Resources/ADC2_AutoComplete/MYFILE.jsI think the real problem is the work I did was complete bullshit. bullet point 5 was an underestimate since last week was a slow week and I delivered 4 of them. >Where's the description of the ABC company 3? Why the other experiences have so many bullet points and this one has none? You have to reduce the lengthy description of the others and fix this one.true but there's nothing useful to add for that one. I just programmed a bunch of web surveys.
>>34522173>for the entire listfor our entire list, not the one on their website.
>>34522173>true but there's nothing useful to add for that one. I just programmed a bunch of web surveys.Place some bullet points there, even if they're not that interesting, they will wonder why it's empty.I just want to tell you that I understand how you feel, I am so fucking anxious rn too. I don't know what to do anymore too. The tech industry is just so fucked up.
>>34522137>I forgot to ask this as well, do you have a portfolio? What are your projects about?Yeah I have a portfolio website but haven't updated it in around 6-7 years. I don't see anyone accessing my portfolio page though so don't bother updating it. These projects were all from 6+ years ago when I still had hope.>text sentiment classifier (trained the classifier using tensorflow) served via API and used in a survey to route responses, basically bullet point 4 on company 2. company 2 outsourced its entire programming department btw.>face expression classifier in images using tensorflow. I got it working with tensorflow.js and got it working on my webcam.>stock market trading account app, gets data and you can trade fake money (did that cs50 course years ago) but built it using Django and not flaska few other random things. Nothing earth shattering, maybe a few decent ideas here and there.I want to build a survey platform but I need to leave this job first since there's an intellectual property clause in my contract.
>>34522252>I want to build a survey platform but I need to leave this job first since there's an intellectual property clause in my contract.Nobody is gonna know, just do it, and before you publish it, then you leave the job and deploy it.
>>34522216I'm also applying to data / research analyst type jobs in the public sector but no luck yet.
>>34522137>>34522089Yes, speak with professionals, maximize the resources available to you or that you can find. >directly on career sitegood, but seek out large companies and sift through their CS or IT (whatever you are doing) pages. i was seeking pharma companies so i searched up large companies, merck, johnson and johnson, regeneron, alcon, zeiss, fucking whatever you can think of per sector. big company = their recruiters get paid to get a hit so you can at least speak with them if they call, and they may refer you to multiplehiring managers>>34522295biostatistics, even? try to widen your search but day by day. this is an endurance not a sprintalso try nonprofits like large hospitals, penn, mit, rwj, the va, fucking anywhere. they need coding people and the bennie's are good
