always ask people questions that sound like you're about to get to know them and continue to ask them questions in the same vein, but instead, immediately seize upon the first couple sentences they say and speak for at least 5 minutes on what that reminds you of from your life and interests. if they try to get a word in edgewise just say lemmefinishwait over and over until they're quiet again and then resume what you were saying

Look up grey rocking, a strategy to deal with people you want to discourage from interacting with you. Basically always be underreacting. People tell you a fantastic story? Wow how fantastic (make sure not to actually sound excited or even surprised). What did you do during the weekend? Oh you know, nothing much. If you find a spot, talk about some difficulty you had with customer service and make sure to include all the steps and all the back and forth. Or give mini lectures on stuff most don't find interesting like how to deal with your aging car and its maintenance. Showing 20+ photos of your vacation or cat can also go a long way. And the most boring thing there is: be the voice of reason whenever someone else gets giddy or excited. "Maybe I will win the lottery!" "Yeah but then again, statistically your chances are higher to be hit by a car." "She probably thinks I'm the worst person!" "Maybe, or you are just thinking that because you are emotional now." Any attempt to find emotional resonance, instead give a politician's answer. Who knows? Maybe yes, maybe no. Let's not draw any conclusions just yet.
