>be me
>move to BC from Ontario to pursue new career path in life, marine industry; particularly BC Ferries
>spent time and money over past couple of years taking courses, studying, etc.
> 2025, don't pass interview
>2026, take courses, smoke interview
> job offer last week, Customer Service Attendant, starting June 1st...want to proactively work towards upgrading to deck position eventually
>Finally, in the industry after past 4.5 years of living here
>Goodbye summer as I need to be on-call 7-days-a-week June - October as it's peak season (also decent # of guaranteed shifts)
>But here it is, I'd bid adieu to my current casual event serving & catering gig, also no more temp construction labour (ain't much, but it's honest+same day $); my new career ladder and totem pole climbing starts now,
>It'll be slow in the beginning, but here it is

>also be me
>get offered full participant role in clinical trial in Montreal, six weeks, walk out with huge $$$
>i've done a 4-weeker there before, no side effects/adverse reactions, just $$$ for sitting on my ass reading books, getting blood drawn occasionally each day, taking 1 pill a week, sleeping, studying, watching movies, all of the time in the world with an internet connection to accomplish whatever I need/want to get done
>get to keep summer plans of visiting family&friends in Ontario I only see once a year if lucky, and road trip/camping vacation in Yukon Territory
>Eliminate all remaining personal debt, put aside a solid emergency fund, savings, discretionary income to spare

My rationale for the latter is that BC Ferries does hiring campaigns every spring, sometimes twice a year, and if I aced the interview this time I can do it again; one 6-week stay on a clinical trial for a huge one-time payout is very rare, and though it does seem like choosing instant gratification at first, it would mean an enormous boon and clean financial slate...but my guaranteed career start would have to go on hold.

What Would Anon Do?

>I can do it again
And are they going to want you if you flake out this time?
It feels like you did all this work to get the ferry thing and now you're just like "but I wanna watch movies"
And sure you're covered for 6 weeks but then you have to get some other bullshit job until spring.

My concern exactly, I don't want to get red-flagged if I decline the offer and end up applying again; yet I may be overthinking it, and maybe it happens more often than I think where people have to withdraw.

>but i just wanna watch movies
I'd dig ditches in the summer sun for six weeks for the kind of money being offered by the lab rat route, I just threw that description in there as a little gravy detail of the no work/all pay dynamic of clinical trials, but I'll stay directly on topic next time. The fact remains and my point is, the payout alone is enough to consider and weigh my options.

You are correct about bullshit jobs until spring, yes, that might end up being the case but it's easier and more peaceful to work those while completely in the black on bank statements+comfortable emergency fund established+good savings until I can land another opportunity in the future. That's what I'm pondering, the Ferries hire frequently, I'm approaching my connections and people I know about whether a hiring team would or would not red-flag my application next time after my withdrawal.
