My job involves sitting at a desk, staring at a screen, and doing absolutely nothing for eight hours straight. They completely fail to give me any tasks most days, so I literally just sit there and do nothing. For security reasons, I'm not allowed to bring my phone or any handheld game devices to my desk. Books are technically allowed, but then there's a chance one of the higher-ups could catch me "slacking" while I'm on the clock. Is there anything I can do to keep myself occupied all day? I sometimes try to think about my hobbies, but I'm on the spectrum and it's hard to focus on them if I'm not actively looking at them. As it is now, I literally just look at the clock and count the minutes until I can go home.
>>34542538Is it possible to read ebooks or anything online (something you don't have to save on the computer)? How strict do they monitor you?
>>34542538I had that for a whileUsed the time to learn some programming (C#) using an online terminal
>>34542538Have you tried art? I usually do gesture drawings when bored, filled up a third of a notebook once.
>>34542545My coworker is always watching random YouTube videos. I assume the IT people know about it, but they don't care. But things like ebooks would be slightly different, because you can't really consume them "passively" like you could a YouTube video. Besides, even if I didn't have to download them, it would still be logged in my Internet history.>How strict do they monitor you?No idea desu.>>34542588My job is coding, and there are a few languages I'd like to learn, but none of them have anything to do with my job, so they probably wouldn't want me studying up on them during work hours. >>34542596Not really my thing.
>>34542672I have a sneaky idea: make a static website that has coding information, but put the text of an ebook hidden inside so you can just view the source code or whatever and read it. Some kind of hidden toggle or something to access the book while the site has actually job relevant information.
>>34542740lmao clever but probably excessive. desu my boss probably wouldn't care if i was reading a book when he walked in. but maybe if that happened over and over, he'd be required to report it or something.another reason that I'm hesitant about ebooks is that i read lots of crime novels and they usually have violence and sex, and i don't want to be reading that stuff on my work computer.
>>34542767Read classic literature. Tends to be more mild on that type of content (though not necessarily devoid of it).
>>34542538Hey, SOMEBODY has to watch those radar screens for incoming missiles.
>>34542538What is it you look at for 8 hours straight that is so important that you can't even read a book or look at your phone? You should get another job. It's only a matter of time before this one is automated.
>>34544650I’m guessing it’s a monitoring type of job. Since OP said the job is coding-related and no coding languages he wants to learn are related, to me the only thing I can realistically see this being is watching/training AI agents made in React or another AI-adjacent scripting language. That job generally requires a lot of sitting around only intervening if something goes wrong to correct the AI. Ironically he’s one of the few positions that can’t be automated (yet) because he’s likely the only human oversight they have lol
>>34542538>get paid to not do shit all dayWhere can I get this job? Is a high school diploma the bare minimum required? What's your job title?
>>34544650OP here. I work for a defense contractor. The pay is good, and it doesn't look like I'm gonna get replaced by AI anytime soon. I just wish it weren't so boring.
>>34544956>>34542767>>34542672you really think they monitor your internet history?if i didnt know better i would say where i live they arent allowed to do thatbut im not sure desuif your job is that boring, i dont get why you couldnt bring a phone either though
>>34544966Where you live, companies aren't allowed to monitor their employees' Internet history on company devices?
>>34544994yes as far as i know they arent
