Is getting a job ever a bad move?

Almost feels like I will have a higher status among friends and family if I continue to claim to be a writer than if I actually got a wagie job and then any illusions that I am secretly successful go away and everyone knows I just work at Target.

But then another part of me thinks that learning not to give a fuck what anyone thinks is what I am supposed to be doing. And taking the job at Target should help me with this.

At the end of the day my chances of anything good happening in my life probably go up because even working at Target I have more contact with the world and thus much more chance of getting a gf or forming a valuable social connection or SOMETHING.

So get a job at Target or hold out for something better? What does 4chan think?

Why can't you hold out *while* you work at Target?
It's not a glorious job, anon, but it's a job. People will see right through your "I'm a writer" cope bullshit. They will ask too many questions and immediately know you're lying and then never talk to you about it again and think you're a pathetic loser. That's not worth it.
A job is a good thing at the end of the day. Like you said, you at least get some human interaction and can make some money which you can use do to XYZ with.
But since you brought it up, you mentioned "hold out for something better." So what is that "something better" and how will you get it by "holding out" instead of "working towards"?

touche. My language reveals the truth. I wasn't going to do shit, just continually brainstorming easy ways of getting rich until I ultimately give up or make a feeble attempt that leads to nothing

Then why did you even make this thread?

How do you make a living right now? Why do you need a job?

Do you know how to code? I was thinking about doing a SaaS, maybe we could colab.

I just live off savings. I could go on for many years like this but not forever

NTA , so you're essentially stagnant then. Take the target job and get the ball moving again. Is this a big city or small town ?

This question makes sense in a place where everyone knows everyone but not really in the big city.

Fact: EVERY professional writer in the world whose name is not Rowling or King has a day job.

Yeah its a small enough place that I am feeling a lot of fear of reputaional damage or something.

I specifically chose to apply for this shit job so that I would not have any stress or anxiety around losing the job and so it would take up the minimum amount of mental bandwidth.

But I think the reputational thing has me STRESSED. Or maybe its just because I havent worked in a while and havent had to act professional for a while. But yeah I feel so much anxiety about going to this job, its a fear of being seen as a loser I'm pretty sure. I can still back out of it and maybe get a job at a warehouse or some shit where I am not quite so likely to be perceived

Your thread disgusts me. You should get a day job and actually try your hand at writing.
