How do I genuinely overcome agoraphobia without therapy?I only leave the house after midnight to get mail, and I pay some neighbour to do my shopping and coffee for me (he doesn’t talk much during this)I’m 29, I just want to function normal
>>34781223By gradually proving to yourself that there's nothing to be afraid of, one small step at a time. Make a little effort each day to do something that you wouldn't have done normally. Leave your comfort zone slightly, and then introspect on the fact that it wasn't as bad as your imagination made it out to be. Do a little more each time, until you're fully able to leave the house and do things in public.
>>34781223In many cases agoraphobia is a mask or byproduct of something else - for example someone prone to panic attacks becomes doubly afraid of the embarrassment of having one in public. Treating the underlying issue can reduce the agoraphobia. Incidentally , there are psychiatrists willing to treat you by phone or Zoom so you don't have to go to them
>>34781223Fellow agoraphobe. Been housebound on and off my whole life...I can't work because of it myself, but I have improved a tonTruthfully, agoraphobia has a really low recovery rate. I'm not saying it's impossible, but only 1/3rd of us truly recover. I personally go through times where I'm doing really well, and other times where I'm completely reclusive...My honest advice is to begin slowly and to prepare to not recover quickly, that you will inevitably take steps back. Since you are comfortable going out at night, use that as a jumping off point. Maybe sit on your doorstep for a few minutes at night, or stand by your mailbox for a few minutes, or if your neighborhood is safe enough, take a 1 minute walk. The thing is: it's okay to be scared, it will absolutely feel overwhelming, but in this scenario, just because something feels scary doesn't mean it is unsafe. I'll keep an eye on this thread since I'd like to encourage you since I struggle with the same issues
