Post birds, appreciate birds
birds are tarded
Never enough ducks and geese in these bird threads.
Such a treat to have access to hummingbirds in your own yardBut I really do miss Australia and hand feeding wild cockatoos and galahs and all the other rainbow colored birds. The northern hemisphere is quite dull after being exposed to all the color of the south. Maybe i should move to Florida or something
Oriole was waiting for the starling to finish eating the suet so I shot it, I figured the sound would scare it away but no, neither the sound nor the dead starling bothered it one bit. Helping native birds rocks.
PS if you ever worried about killing starlings making the other birds fear you as a bird killer, no they don't give a shit. Crows will come eat them.
Besides those livestreams, are there any actual and good ornithology channels on YT?
Couple of juvenile ravens, very noisy.

they are gurgle-screaming with water in the mouth lol

Apologies for atrocious pictures, but what is he? Never seen anything like him before. In the Midwest. Also saw a pair of brown thrashes today, which I'd never seen before. Very pretty birds. Much more vivid color in person than you would expect from pictures.

Saw this bid at work. It looks like it's malnourished. Work started poisoning a bunch of birds so its parents probably died or something. It came up pretty close to me while all the other birds were warning it lol. I stood up and it got scared and ran away.>>5009746F. Barred owl right above me yesterday.
Wish I took a photo, but I just saw a Yellow Cardinal
Does anyone know full sauce/vid?
Where I live there's lots of fields and tons of bugs, so birds get bored and fly in front of cars for fun, kinda like playing chicken. They will even time when two cars are about to pass each other and fly in between both (2 lane road.) The cars are going 65mph lol.Once when I was driving to work it was a very windy day, and a bird was using tailwinds to fly fast. He was literally flying at least 55mph.
I want to leave some water for local birds.I only have a supershallow small teaplatter and a bowl thats perhaps too deep. Would the platter be good enough?
>>5010249what is happening?
Two pigeons made a nest in the balcony of our apartment and had two babies.Whenever I get close the parents just fly away, leaving their kids to my mercy. Why are they such cowards? Also the surface of the balcony is more covered in shit than not.
>>5010580A bowl isn't that dangerous but i feel like a lot of birds can't drink properly in it If you have a plant saucer it's really the best cause they can also wash themselves in it
>>5010689are they domestic rock pigeons? take them in. they can be friends.
>>5010580Try the bowl but fill it with pebbles so birds don't drown in it :]
>>5010704Yes, and no thanks (the entire balcony is a sufficient amount of shit for me, also one of them doesn't have feet and it makes me sad)
>>5010705>so birds don't drown in itHow do these retards even survive in nature?
>>5010710they don't desu, if ground predators like feral cats and foxes (and coyotes if you live in a third world country) weren't a thing you would just kind of see bird corpses on the ground regularly. they're very fragile.
>>5010689two pigeons tried to nest on my balcony but after breaking their "nest" and scaring them away for like two weeks, several times a day they finally fucked off (to the roof) and probably have a nest there now
>>5010582Unclear.Original title was "mother hen crying over her dead babies" but it could be just REALLY hot and she is regulating her temps by opening beak and breathing real fast
Is there something I can/should do about this nest exposed to the sun in my parents' backyard?
Just saw a waterthrush for the first time. Northern or Louisiana I don't know. I saw it foraging on the ground, kind of bobbing and swaying like a woodcock. I was like shit what's that... ovenbird? Brought up ovenbird on allaboutbirds and hmm that's not it, but the very first similar species result is.

>>5011125This video shows how they bounce ass while walking around. Good confirmation that that's what I saw. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjjKfxsx71s
Good news. I've accidentally formed a multi-species gang of birds on my street because I'm the only one taking care of my front garden. This'll surely go well.
>>5011137Animals tend to be less aggressive when they are well fed. Like all those videos of supervised animals playing together. At work the crows like to bully the pigeons lol.
>>5011137>>5011149Let's say I start befriending the crows of my area by giving them food every day and shouting some word when I do.Could I hypothetically use that word to call some aerial support in case I get mugged or something near my house?
>>5011137There was an abandoned fully feathered crow fledgling in my yard. I kept him food for five times a day. He used to eat well but eventually he started eating less. He died today. Maybe I should have taken him in and cared for him instead of hoping that he would habilitated soon and fly away. I'm sorry that I let him down. I hope he didn't suffer much.

>>5003749Helo. Birdwatcher Newfag here. Also a poorfag. I currently do not have much money to spend on a mirrorless camera with a telescope lens but I like watching birds and uploading them sights on my inaturalist profile.I was thinking in buying one of these cheap telescope eyepiece cameras and a field monocular from aliexpress.Any experiences with similar set ups or any advice
>>5005046Oh my god what a cutiepie. My pet chicken would also close her eyes when you scratched her head.
>>5011708I bought some cheap ~15€ monocular from aliexpress like two years ago, and it was flat out horrendous also had some ~30€ binoculars from ali that I used seldomly for a year. thought they were decent at the time, and I was quite happy with them, but once I got Nikon Prostaff P3's (~110€) the difference was hugewith optics, I feel like you can't go too cheap, but if your budget is very tight I'm not gonna shill more expensive ones to you. I'd have a look at 2nd hand market.
I have a cardinal that visits my feeder and just generally hangs out in my back yard. He's missing most of the feathers on his head so I've come to start calling him The Friar. I don't know why he's bald, I think he may have been attacked by something
>>5012773Lmao

>>5013299thought the amount of shit would be enough for you to want to get rid of them
>>5013370I never go in the balcony anyway so as long as the mess is contained there I can make the sacrifice, but now that it's following me inside it's not worth it.I'm constantly finding them crawling on me FUCK
>>5010710You see the survivors and ones smart enough to not drown. The pebbles trick is used for beekeepers too since it helps prevent bees from falling in and being unable to get out. Most birds would likely be kind of fine due to the waterproof feathers, but if they fall in and panic it can be bad. Or bad for owls who can't get water on their feathers without being weighed down. Birds get most of their water from the foods they eat regardless, so it's not common that they need to be going near very many large bodies of water.
>>5013612>owls who can't get water on their feathers without being weighed downMmh, I see why the association with libraries...Until today I thought they were supposed to be the librarian, but they're really the stinky hobo who never showers and fights with the blacks (crows).Fascinating

I found a baby bird, not yet a fledgling needs more feathers, I put it in a box and put the box in the nearest tree. momma bird is crying like crazy because she can't see the baby and the baby won't make any noise to attract attention. wat do? should I put it back on the ground?
>>5014598How is putting it in a box in the nearest tree not a thousand times worse than leaving it where you found it?
>>5014601>than leaving it where you found it?on the hot sidewalk being eaten by ants?
>>5014438Normally they just fly into the glass super hard.At work there are some very large windows, and birds regularly fly into them. A couple impacts are so hard it literally knocked the shit out of the birds.
>>5014625Its my sliding door so when its closed there's a screen. Birds still fly into the screen sometimes.
>>5014571little blue heron, i'd say
Big raven convention this morning, 3 very loud youngsters. I think dad got some peanuts and ate them right in front of the begging kids like "fuck you, learn to get your own"
So I have nowhere else to ask this, so here it goes;A mourning dove decided to hide itself in my garage to escape a predatory bird (I think it was some sort of hawk), and now im wondering what to do. Like Im aware the lil guy is probably shitting itself in fear, but I cant really let it stay in there and cant keep the garage door open forever either, so is there any tricks I could use not to make it panic needlessly? Pretty sure the hawk is long gone as it got chased away by grackles.Twas pretty fucking dope to see, wasnt expecting to see that this morning.

Watched my bluebirds fledge yesterday, around noon the last shy one came out at the parents urging. Their second nest in my yard this year. Later I was outside and went to pull some dandelions under my apple tree and they were in the tree, started flying around me and freaking out so of course I left them alone, but I did walk past again to check my mail and saw one of the fledglings standing on a nearby rock, spacing out and completely unafraid of me.I really wish I had thought to take a pic but I kind of stopped in my tracks when I saw it and just looked closely to confirm it was one of the baby bluebirds, and was being still trying to not scare it, then heard the parents chattering at me like "get away from it!" so I moved along.Somebody else's pic attached, that's what it looked like. Nice dark blue plumage.
>>5010689>>5013299>>5013954Update:The pigeons are growing and every time I peak around the curtains they scurry back into the nest like little ladies trying to run with high heels. It's pretty cute but the mite thing is a problem.I didn't want to risk hurting the birds so I decided to simply keep the balcony doors closed until they leave the nest, and only clean up afterwards. The problem with that plan was that it's unbearably hot here and I need that balcony for air, so I got impatient and decided to go the mite spray route.I didn't have any so I asked my neighbor and he had an old can of Raid generic bug spray that he came to spray for me.I asked him multiple times "are you sure they're going to be fine?" to which he responded reassuringly "of course, I've done this before". He's a retired groundskeeper for a local school so I trusted him.We waited for all four of them to be together and while blocking the entrance to the little nook they're in with his hand he started drenching the poor fuckers. At least 3 full seconds of spraying. The babies didn't make any noise, just started violently flapping their wings up and down like they were slapping the floor, then after maybe 5 seconds they stopped moving.Meanwhile, as soon as they could, the parents immediately flew away but at about 2 meters from the balcony they essentially turned into bricks and fell 8 floors into the concrete below.I'm wide-eyed trying to process what happened when this motherfucker shrugs and says "eh", then grabs the two babies, tosses them over the railing and says "not a problem anymore" while dusting off his hands.I start crying and say "but you said they'd be ok" and he replies "it happens hehe" and leaves like nothing happened.During this CRIME that lasted maybe 1 minute, at least 300 mites came inside and got into the carpet (the spray did fuck all to them).I don't even know how to feel. I want to say fuck birds, but also I've been crying this entire afternoon.Pic related.

I love those little niggers like you wouldn't believe.Every time I see them zooming around the block my day becomes just a little bit brighter.Every time I hear them screaming in the air, I cant help but smile. To me, they are the birdiest birds to ever birb on this world.

How common is interspecies corvid mating? On my.commute path I've noticed a single carrion crow that hangs out with a group of rooks and seems particularly close to one of them.
>>5023427They probably fuck but aren't interspecies compatiblejust because birds will fuck most anything
These house wren (Maryland area) babies lived in a birdhouse by my porch. A day or two ago I captured this photo of them crying out for food from mom. Today they are gone! Do they look old enough to be fledglings and jump out of the nest? The bird house is hanging on our porch and it would be impossible for a raccoon or anything to reach it. I also saw bird poop on our porch today which might be a sign they were flopping around down there a bit. I just hope they got to leave the nest and didn't get snatched out by a crow or something!

Sa was little ball of fluff wriggling on the ground and thought it was a feather. Nope, a small fledgling or something. I moved it away from the sidewalk so it wouldn't get stepped on. And put it on a big leaf so it's easier to see. Looks like it fell out of the nest and had a small injury from hitting a rock. Hopefully tomorrow it's gone from its parent picking it back up! I can't climb the tree to put it back.

It was kinda funny. When I first interacted with it, it opened its beak up like I had food. I tried clearing some dirt from under the rock gravel. It didn't want water lol. been cultivating backyard feeders for the past 8 months. Lots of mourning doves, robins, mocking birds, blue birds, woodpeckers, bluejays, cardinals.... finally coaxed a murder of crows to feed regularly with > 3 feeders, bath, large Oak tree and 700 sq feet fenced backyard. The last 2 weeks no birds or squirrels come to feed. Either its too hot or local predators have made it radioactive (red tailed hawks and swallow-tailed kites have been known to attack once in a while). >>50441263 chicks left the nest today. I suspect two of them might have been pushed out or something. I yeeted the smallest one back inside as it doesnt have full feathers yet.
