What's the consensus on this guy, related to the dryopiths/hominines or the sivapiths/pongines?
>>
>>5009733
Agreed. There are outdated theories and modern schizo theories about them being more closely related. Some 19th century scientists went to indonesia to search for a common ancestor between humans and pongos.
In the end it doesn't really matter who's more closely related, as evolution isn't linear.

it's just the way pongos are built
in the wild, they have to absorb all the nutrients they can from what little food they can find in the lean times, so it's only natural they got a bit pudgy with regular meals in captivity (plus not having to cover great distances in search of food doesn't help)
it's also why they're so slow compared to other apes, less movement equals less energy lost equals higher chance of surviving until you reach the next fruiting tree
>>
>>5012107
I've noticed the same happens to a lot of people who have reptiles as pets. They feed them as if they were mammals so they end up obese

at a certain length it does, but for the most part the humid conditions of the rainforest keep their hair nice and fine
if you compare a wild pongo to one in a zoo, you see that the captive chaps have dreads while the wild ones have a shorter frizzled cape

Kinda unfair to compare different subspecies in that pic.

>>5025661
most captive borneans are a mix of subspecies anyway
they didn't even recognise subspecies until about 20 years ago
zoos don't discriminate between them anyway since the population is so low as it is, excluding the suspected or confirmed mutts would destroy the captive breeding program

Pongos and gibbons supposedly get along very well and sometimes even help raise each other's young. Zoos have no problem keeping them together in the same enclosure.

>I wish his films survived

Well actually...

"Yes, at least one film featuring Joe Martin, the orangutan, survives today. The Max Linder feature comedy Seven Years Bad Luck (1921), in which Joe Martin has a brief appearance, is available and considered Linder's best surviving film. Additionally, Joe Martin appears in two extant episodes of the serial Lady Baffles and Detective Duck (1915), specifically episodes four ("Baffles Aids Cupid") and nine ("When the Wets Went Dry"). However, most of Joe Martin's other films, including approximately 20 comedy shorts, several serials, and features like Black Orchid, Trifling Women, and The Adventures of Tarzan, are considered lost."

They also have larger intestines to absorb food more efficiently than humans, we cook our food which makes it easier to digest. previous poster kind of touched on it but it was kind of ambiguous so I wanted to clarify.

I think it is very interesting that father and son pongo interactions are a behavior exclusive to zoos

>A group of orangutans is called a buffoonery! Orangutans are known for their playful, curious and sometimes silly nature, making this name a perfect fit.
i saw this on the Sumatran Orangutan Society website. is this true?
>>
>>5045036
there is no official name
most of those names for groups of animals are just made up
I've heard primate keepers refer to their pongo groups as a 'family', 'mob', 'flange', and my personal favourite 'gangutan'

Monke doesn’t pay taxes, monke doesn’t work 9 to 5. Monke lays around eating nanners and scratching his bottom and never worries about not having what he needs to survive.
