what's the most aesthetic fish?
Goliath groupers, they look like how you think a giant fish would. Plus they can bark with their swim bladders which is kino as hell.
Archerfish.

>>5018492BASED MANDARIN GOBY APPRECIATORI clean aquariums for a living and love to watch these guys. The way the move, their inquisitive nature, 11/10 fish. I prefer the target mandarins over the psychedelic ones though. The brown with subtle pops of blue and orange feels underrated. Also my first choice, the longnose hawkfish. He is friend-shaped and also fun to watch for similar reasons. Plus they are very cute when they yawn.
>>5018526Unfortunately still this way, can confirm as someone who works in a fish store. People would rather pay $150 for wild-caught and dose $50 bottles of copepods every week than pay double for a captive-bred mandarin raised on frozen mysis. Really baffles me how stupid people in the aquarium hobby are.
>>5018032Love these things, you can just throw them like darts and kill basically anything.
>>5018345So that's where they harvest Green Stuff
>>5020166saltfags are psychopaths its not about the animals or the chemistry its about who can spend the most money on living decorations
>>5020189100% agree, everyone always wants salt too because "ooooh bright colors so exotic" but the nicest tanks I take care of are always planted freshwater (which is like 2 of the 45 clients I work for most of them just get AFC tanks with fugly plastic plants). Why can't people just appreciate subtle irridescents on tiny schooling fish? The people with planted tanks also give a shit and know wtf they're talking about when I ask about their tanks. I haven't met a single saltfag who knew how to take care of the tank on their own or could tell me anything about a single living creature in their aquarium. Most of them aren't even aware that most of the fish-coral in their tank is wild-caught. Usually just skinwalkers with too much money and no patience.Total saltfag annihilation! NOW!
>>5020203I dont know man, I know a guy that has a tank just for seagrass, and it's pretty nice
>>5019050God got pretty lazy with the fishes...
>>5020203I feel as though there are way more shitty freshwater tanks than saltwater tanks. Think about how many kids get pet goldfish only for them to die in 2 months.>BUT THAT DOESNT COUNT WE DONT CLAIM THEMMMMYeah and the 'good' saltwater tank owners probably don't claim the retards you've met. Why are you people so dead-set on shoving a wedge between communities?
>>5018032I nominate Finger mullet for most aesthetic bait fish

>>5020203Bullshit. The low barrier to entry for freshwater literally means that the vast majority of freshie tanks are horribly abusive. Even in non-shithole countries people still abuse the hell out of freshwater fish. It wouldn't surprise me if a majority of people that keep freshwater fish in the US have never even heard of water conditioner. And that number rises to like 99% outside of the West. And there's no incentive for them to ever learn because - whoops! another goldfish dead, good thing they only cost half a penny!Meanwhile besides clownfish marine fish and corals aren't cheap, and even those are a lot more expensive than goldfish. And keeping coral alive requires more knowledge of water chemistry than what your average freshfag would ever have to know to succeed. You literally cannot afford to stay ignorant with marine. Of course there are some rich fucks who pay other people to basically run their tanks but they're a small minority and not representative.
>>5018032Slender sunfish
>>5022962I think he's just equating "freshwater keepers" with people who have nice naturalistic planted tanks, which that is absolutely not a majority when you factor in the sheer amount of people keeping Bettas and Goldfish in abysmal conditions.

>>5025601>Why supply poached fish if captivity breeding is possible? 1) Existing supply chains. Businesses have existed for decades by capturing wild caught specimens and they neither have the expertise nor the equipment to breed these fish. They're not going to suddenly dump a business model for ethical reasons.2) Efficiency. They are already out there capturing other fish that are not captive bred. They will capture lots of different types of fish in an area. They may have maximum limits as to how many of each specific fish they catch, but there is no guarantee they will catch specific fish each time. It's often luck of the draw and if they see something sellable, they're going to catch it even if they were there for something completely different.3) Economics. Captive breeding is still expensive. The supply chain is so streamlined by now (especially since it's 3rd world) that it is way cheaper to capture a bunch of fish and ship them worldwide even if 50% or more die..>Why not charge more for the poached fish? It's not the same company breeding and poaching. They are two separate entities competing against each other, and the poachers are cheap as fuck. The consumers of course are mostly dumb as shit and enable this business model. Dumbasses will gladly pay for a cheap wild-caught dragonet every month because they can't keep it alive rather than pay three times as much for a captive-bred one that will last years.

>>5019681Grok is this real?
I know these threads massively favor "rare" or "special" fish, but I find a lot of the "common" ones to be very aesthetic. Both bass and pike can be pretty, but I think the rainbow trout is the prettiest. It's got that classic salmonidae look, a pretty marmorization, and that kino red strip on the side. Just generally very good looking fish.
>>5030626It's like someone took the front part of a sturgeon combined it with the back part of a catfish and then gave the whole thing a cool paintjob. Very nice fish.>>5027254It's majestic in its simplicity. Good choice.
>>5042682Rainbows are gorgeous (as expected of anything named that), but for me the prettiest trout are Westslope Cutthroat and Brook Trout (I know they are technically char, shut up).
>>5042691
>>5042691>>5042692As a euro I haven't really had those on the radar, but both of those are very pretty. I think I like rainbow a bit more than cutthroat, but brook trout might be the winners here, those are some beautiful fish.
platonically ideal fish, the American Shad
>>5041495insane colours. looks like a living painting. beautiful fish.
>>5042691Fun fact Cutthroat can be hard to distinguish from the Arizona native trouts and some rainbows, especially when young and all of the Pacific trout can interbreed which complicates things. Rainbows have a large variation of color, from the Kenai river rainbows and steelheads to the small Golden trout. The Pacific trout can tolerate the widest range of temperatures, from freezing to 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the Gila and Apache trout. And Char are still salmonidae and thus still related to the normal trouts/salmon.

>>5042682Based common fish enjoyer. I'm a big fan of black crappie myself.
>>5044963Never seen one of these in person before, but that's a very nice looking fish indeed. The spots on the fins, the way the lighter green shines through under the darker back, and the general marmorization on the skin are all very nice. Good choice anon.
