previous: >>4995272

This thread is dedicated to all animals of the Reptilia and Amphibia classes. Topics include, but are not limited to: geckos, snakes of all kinds, frogs, salamanders, newts, turtles, tortoises, and much more. Before asking a question, do a search on the internet to see if it has been answered
Classifieds for finding breeders and products:
>morphmarket.com
>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>caudata.org
Most forums will have a "for sale" section on them, so look for that, especially if you have a specific herp you want. Craigslist can also be a good source for cheap aquariums, and make sure to check for any reptile expos that occur in your area.

When asking a question, make sure to include these details:
>Type and size of animal
>Enclosure dimensions
>Humidity and temperature
>Type of substrate
>The decor you use
>How often you feed
>The type of food you use
>If your animal is wild caught or captive bred
>How often you handle
>Who you bought the animal from

If you have space for a huge pond enclosure and you have a plan for what happens to the turtle if you die (they can live 50-80 years), go for it.
>>
Realistically do turtles actually need the 10 gal/inch? Or is 5-8/inch enough? Assuming basking area, big ass canister filter, enough hornwort and floaters to survive turt, etc.

My kiddo really wants one and the local mom's group has one trying to be rehomed. It is a 6-8" slider (or possibly map turtle the pics aren't clear), and has lived for about 10 years in a 29g before one died (shocker!) so I was thinking a 40br with a basking topper, could add plenty of guppies, snails, and shrimp from another tank and maybe throw some platys or least killis in as snacking friends. I don't really have physical space in my house for much larger than 40g, with my other 3 fish tanks and various terrariums.
>>
>>5018673
That and I don't think I could man handle one if it ever needs to go to the vet for something serious.

Hello everyone. I have a spare 20g long that was originally going to be for my pixie frog until I got a better enclosure for it. This tank would go into my living room so Id like it to be a good display tank. Here are some ideas I have.
>fire belly toads
The local pet stores here still have them for $20 each. I guess we're lucky that theres a breeder in the area that sells to them, because apparently theyve become hard to find and expensive
>Grow out tank for colubrids
Ive been really entertaining the idea of getting a Cal King, Bull Snake, or Honduran Milksnake. Obviously this would be a grow out tank and I can accomodate for when they grow. I regularly come across the first two in the wild and can make a naturalistic setup easy peezy
Thoughts, suggestions, or recomendations??
>>
>>5018449
This is a highly subjective topic, pertaining to specific species and the context surrounding whatever the suggested minimum is. For example,
>>5018541
I likewise keep my crested gecko in an 18x18x24. He's now 55 grams and plenty active. Could he be in something bigger? Sure, absolutely - but I would disagree with the notion that it's a requirement. Further, I can discern no objective merit to his quality of life by increasing the size of the enclosure.
That said, most people do still keep their reptiles in poor environments, whether by size or other insufficient parameters. Japanese reptile twitter is a smorgasbord of everything wrong you can do in the hobby. The standard is to keep things like african fat tails in a 20-gallon with either a puppy pad or, presumably, some form of clay balls as the only substrate. They're lucky to have even one hide most of the time.
So, if the choice is split between either going too far above or too far below the actual requirements for a given species, I'd lean towards more, if only for the welfare of the animal itself. I can think of little reason to justify a smaller than recommended (in most cases) enclosure as its permanent home.

Yeah my local dealer told me no unless I have a 7 by 7 foot pond indoors or a heated outdoors which will cost a fortune and possibly result in quite a few of my neighbors cats disappearing. Bearing in mind I live in a terraced house surrounded by other houses where people let their cats walk everywhere while my garden is probably 8 or 10 feet wide at the very most. It fucking sucks. They told me I could possibly get away with an alligator snapping turtle because they don't swim or do jack but the downsize is that it's a fucking alligator snapping turtle.

Can anyone recommend me a herp that is naturally wide or fat/wrinkly/stocky? I already have a fat ass frog but I have space for one more herp and want something similarly fugly which is preferably not another frog.
>>
>>5019670
Do bearded dragons or blue tongue skinks pop up on your radar at all? Much easier to get keep than frogs but similarly useless retardes with a bit more nuance in personality.
>>
>>5019673
>Do bearded dragons or blue tongue skinks pop up on your radar at all
I did consider them but they are not exactly my style of rotund if that makes sense. Uromastyxs are closer to what I am looking at in comparison to skinks or beardeds which I am keeping an eye on but if there are other reptiles which are more fugly/fat/rotund/wrinkly/stocky it would be appreciated. Amphibians are not much of problem for me because I am used to the care requirements for my frog but obviously most of the amphibians that check off my list are frogs which I already have (once you get a frog you have practically seen them all behavior wise).

how is that a bad thing, theyre much cooler than common snappers
>>
>>5020514
No climbing fixture? How depressingly barren.
>>
>>5020767
They look really, really fucking cool but they're boring behaviorally, the definition of a sit and wait predator that can stay in the same spot for days.

Bigger issue is probably that it's an enormous and heavy turtle that can easily take off your fingers if you're not careful, which is going to be a pain in the ass if you ever need to move stuff around or clean the pond
>>
>>5021088
Pretty much this. Alligator snappers are lazy bastards. And i'd rather deal with a turtle that could potentially just mildly injure your hand over one that could completely deglove it.
>>
>didn't try to nip me this time when getting him out
Feels good man. Surprisingly difficult to put him back into his enclosure though once he hugs my hand
>>
>>5020767
Don't get me wrong, they look more awesome than common snappers by a long shot for sure. Technically """easier""" to handle too due their shorter necks which means you can grip the front of their shell, but as >>5021088 and >>5021161 explained they are extremely sedentary in terms of behavior and they can outright remove feet or hands without much provocation. Every account I have read about alligator snappers being kept as pets always seems to be something the keeper has regretted but too deeply invested in to stop and turn back. Common snappers on the other hand are far more active and you can actually socialize to some degree so you can have them free roam around you or stroke the back of their shells without trouble. As long as you dont outright shove your hand or foot in their face you face no risk and at worse it would mean losing a digit or two as aposed to a whole hand or foot. The other thing I am concious of is lifespan and my own lifestyle as I am only 25 and thinking of having a family someday. These fuckers live 50+ so if I get an alligator that's a risk around kids and if I die or get too old it would mean it would have to be destroyed most likely. A common snapper though would be more manageble and relatively safer/ish with a family as long as I keep it contained and my kids away from it.

>>
>>5019722
I've heard that as turtles come they're pretty smart. Can't they be taught to not bite or is it too bound to instinct?
>>
>>5021680
>>5021088
both of them can take your fingers off, thats not really a point, the only real problem with alligators is they last a long time which means theyll get bigger and bigger unlike commons, and they sit with their mouth open, which makes it easier to lose a finger
also, apparently theyre nocturnal, and theyll only sit around waiting during the daytime.
you can also donate it to a zoo or something, i feel like some people would like to see the giant 100lb turtle
>>5022142
you can teach an animal to do anything, but that requires you to not be retarded

you'll still need a pretty big basking area so it can warm up. Also you'll need to clean up the equivalent of a large dog turd with like a 16oz iced coffee of lizard piss randomly dumped on your floor, so plan accordingly.
>>
>>5023229
you can generally train them to latrine in a bathtub but it'll never be 100%. it's why i never keep a reptile that makes a turd too big for a bioactive enclosure to deal with. I keep new caledonians in bioactive and i only ever need to pick up after them when they decide to shit on the front glass or on a leaf right in front.

I do like that Garter Snakes are active and slightly prefer how they look (although I've heard anecdotally that rosy's are decently active) but I kinda like that the latter is more chill for handling where colubrids are going to be zipping all over the place. >>
>>5024925
WWR is retarded, not because of any political beliefs, but because of that video he made where he grabbed sticks from his yard and put them in a box with 8 leopard geckos that caused him to lose a sponsorship.
>>
>>5025189
Depends on the pressure. If they are too rough it can kill them by introducing air pockets into their bloodstream which causes a massive stroke when the pocket reaches the brain. It's a reak killer in the automotive trade around diesel injection engines and high pressure tyres. If any of them go off against your skin you will be intially fine for a few hours before suddenly dropping dead and I have seen apprentices get beaten senseless by their supervisors because they got caught spooking eachother by letting off pressure against each other's necks with a pneumatic power tool air hose

i am aware that everything depends on context
BUT
if a turtle is crossing the road
should i move it to the direction it is crossing TO or FROM
consider the context of a generic residential area (but then that wouldn't even be helpful unless you knew the closest geography)
plus this was after a storm so shit was stirred
>>
>>5027065
picking it up will confuse it no matter what. it doesn't matter which direction you go, just take it far away from the road
>>
>>5027065
>>5027072 is retarded.
Either
a) the turtle is trying to get somewhere specific or
B) it isnt and is just wandering
If A, placing it anywhere but the direction it's headed is a setback and it will likely just be in the same situation you found it almost immediately. If B, then it doesnt matter at all where you put it.
so the choices are
>put it where it's going, which is either good or irrelevant
>put it where it came from, which is either bad or irrelevant
So putting it where it's going is logically optimal.

He still looks a healthy weight at least. I don't see his pelvis poking through his skin which is apparently an indicator of malnurishment. I have gotten him used to me enough that he no longer tries to bite when handled which I suppose is one silverlining to it all. I am going to keep an eye on him and see if it is potentially shedding related as well.

His sack isn't the smallest, surprising it could get confused. Further, they shouldn't even be cohabitating unless you plan on breeding.
>>
>>5029517
Apparently it was quite small prior to him coming in to the store. He was a rehome from an encounter company who just couldn't cope with him (somehow) and they sexed him as female before handing him over to the store manager. She already had a male so she intended on starting a breeding pair which caused the infighting. Apparently after a month of being in close proximity to another male it raised his testosterone enough for her to realize he was miss-sexed and it was not mating infighting but territorial agression.

Do people actually change out their substrate every 3 months? Feels like this is one of those care guidelines armchair experts (who don't actually own reptiles) recommend but nobody actually does. I change it out every year (or two) but it's always really fucking messy and annoying to do with how much substrate you need to dig out, I just don't believe this is a regular part of someone's routine.
>>
>>5030029
>Do people actually change out their substrate every 3 months
No. Substrate can last as long as 6-12 months but it heavily depends on what kind of substrate you have, how deep, how damp it is and whether it gets aerated semi-regulary. If you have substrate that you aerate by turning over and keep damp but not water logged you can get a year out of it give or take, but most people don't which leads to this 3 month recommendation.
>>
>>5030029
I change it out whenever I feel like it which is usually every few months, other than that I just spot-clean shits and urates with no problems

My leachi is doing well after almost 2 months since I first got him. He's been hiding a lot more so I don't get him out as much, but hes eating from his food bowl here and there if I am not catching him sneaking about when he thinks I am in another room. However, the store manager I rehomed him off has contacted me recently to let me know that some of the eggs of her current leachi breeding pair has hatched and sent me pic rel.

I have told them to keep me in the loop about the sex of the leachi as I have heard that males and females can cohab, is this true? And if so what would I need to expect from having a male and a female in the same enclosure?
>>
>>5037826
One male and one female can cohab, but it's somewhat rare. They're just as likely to try to rip each other's head off as they are to behave peacefully. Some pairs simply will not work, no matter what.
>>
Guys, are dubias and mealworms enough to keep an ackie healthy? These are the only two insects I can get more readily in my area
>>
>>5039553
Yeah. You’ll want to be feeding them a lot more dubias than mealworms though. Dusting them is obviously a must and you can mix it up with a little bit of egg or whatever every now and then but bugs should be the majority of the diet
>>
>>5039553
You'll want to breed a few others, more than likely. I would suggest mixing in stuff like superworms, but superworms breed way too fast for their own good, and they'll make up for a minority of the overall diet.
Crickets are almost a must, however. Try to keep it at least 3-4 regulars, shifting through. Start breeding insects now, because you'll need it - otherwise, good luck paying for them all. Dubias especially, to feed an ackie, you might want 3+ active ~30-gallon bins' worth of roaches breeding.

My leopard gecko has recently been diagnosed with hypovitaminosis A, which is a vitamin A deficiency. It was originally misdiagnosed, and I went back to the vet for an answer after the antibiotics didn't clear everything up. I unfortunately learned the hard way that better supplementation is needed for the insects I feed him.
He is currently doing a bit better, but he is still in need of help, and my vet has given me Fluker's Liquid Vitamin. I was directed to put a drop on an insect four times a week.

The gecko absolutely hates the stuff. He will refuse to eat insects that have the vitamin on them. I decided to give it directly via syringe instead, as the directions say you can do that, and I've never seen such a blatant display of pure disgust before. Shaking his head several times, frantically rubbing his mouth on the ground trying to remove any of the substance around his mouth, moving his neck as if he was trying to get a bug down. I felt pretty bad about it, I'm sure it's disgusting.
Upon Googling it, I came across some anecdotal reports of Fluker's Liquid Vitamin causing deaths in leopard geckos and other herptiles. He didn't seem to get sick from what I gave him, but between his extreme reaction to it and these personal reports, I am admittedly nervous.

My question is, should I be continuing to give Fluker's Liquid Vitamin to the gecko despite his tantrums, or should I be looking into alternatives? I have not tried putting it in his water yet, I've heard you can do that to dilute it. But I do not want to do that if it is going to be a danger to my gecko. I'd like to believe my vet, but I thought it would be best to get a second opinion from people who actually own lizards themselves.
>>
>>5040898
Your best bet might just be to take another vet gamble. They might know what they're talking about, they might not. Forum powers may misattribute the death of an animal to a vitamin when their husbandry was poor in other respects, or they might have caused hypervitaminosis, instead of hypo. You can't really say for sure. Most reptile owners are retards, at least half of reptile vets are underqualified - that's just the reality of things.

the sun is orders of magnitude brighter than anything you're going to be able to get out of a grow light for a plant, and if you're growing succulents, any associated arid reptile would be either 1) a big basker so they'd appreciate bright lights, or 2) nocturnal, in which case it doesnt matter. You're fine.

The summer sun (in my area) is 12000 fc, this is easily matched or exceeded by any remotely good grow light.
Reading the second half of your post makes me regret the snarky tone of mine, but thank you

I was thinking about the ethics of humans keeping venomous snakes, like in zoos or other educational places. I've heard they sometimes defang the snake. So I was wondering, would it be possible to put something like those cat nail caps on the snake's fangs, so it would prevent accidents without having to remove the whole tooth? People could make custom caps to fit the snake, or make some other object.
Except in the case of solenoglyphous, who have the membrane, why would this not work?

Coverage looks fine. What're the dimensions of the tank/size of the lizard?
>>
>>5045524
impractical, because
1) they dont defang snakes in the first place, because
2) snakes lose/regrow fangs all the time. One of the more popular venomous keepers on youtube will often find them and show them to the audience when he's cleaning his enclosures (people have even been envenomated by a loose fang with residual venom in it that was in the snakes poop after they swallowed and passed it).
3) fangs are teeth and they need to be functional/piercing in order for the snake to eat, they use their teeth, fangs included, to pull food into their throats
4) actually grabbing a venomous snake and fucking with their fangs is probably considerably more dangerous than just letting them be and being careful to not put yourself in a situation where you'd get bit
5) the actual thing people do to turn venomous snakes harmless is called a venomoid surgery, where they cut the snakes face open and remove the venom glands, replacing them with glass beads or silicone, but no one but shit-ass thirdies does venomoid surgeries anymore because they fuck up the snake's face, and there have been cases where either the surgery did not fully remove the gland, or it regenerated and an ostensibly venomoid snake killed a guy.

the natural range for beardies would make it so the pen would need to be several square miles in area in order for there to be more than one male. More practical verison would be capturing wild males, breeding them to captive females, and releasing. you could also pull wild clutches but since something like 97% of wild babies dont make it their first year you'd probably crater their population, as they're clearly a food source for something.

Do corns age out of being shy at all? Mine is maybe 3 or 4 months old, and he spends a lot of his time hiding, which i know is normal. Could just be I'm missing him when he's out since he's downstairs, but I've only seen him climbing around once or twice in maybe 6 weeks.

He's totally fine being handled and feeding and everything, just hoping he gets a little more adventurous as he gets older.

my gargoyle geckos are about to get a big upgrade, currently have them separate in a 18x18x24 and a converted 20 long
anyone recommend a specific brand for a hood? ideally I'd like one fixture with both LEDs and a socket for a UVB bulb. I've heard UVB LEDs are basically trash at this point though they might be good in ~5-10 years.

I might add a second female at some point, I know breeders manage to keep them in 40 gallon tubs and this will be more spacious and will have more natural hides.

Tips to get frogs to eat within the first week?

2nd day of having them and ik it's pretty normal for them to not eat right away but any advice on how to speed up the process
>>

>I've heard UVB LEDs are basically trash at this point
They're not, though I'd recommend getting a solarmeter if you get LED UVB lighting. I use two LED UVB bars - one for my leachianus and one for my blue tongue. The variable output means that I can use the same product for both. The output is stable, no burn-in time, and lasts longer than a typical UVB bulb. But, again, you'd need a solarmeter to gauge the correct output for any specific reptile.

Finally...after 10,000 years, I'll be getting my anaconda a proper setup.

8x4x4 with a 200 gallon pond.
Fallen on hard times so it took way too long but hopefully he'll have a permanent house by his 4th birthday.

what do you feed him? do you just buy a pig every 4-6 months?

How do we form a lobbying group to pester trump into clamping down on Australia until they loosen their restrictions? Are there any that we can co-opt?
If we could just get like, 10% of bearded dragon owners in the US to sign on, that's 570,000 households.
>>
>>5057868
Is the pond going to be filtered? Seeing some little fish swimming around a big submerged snake would be neat.
>>
>>5057881
Males only get to 9-10 feet so right now he's on mega-rats, at full size in a few years I'll feed him rabbits.
>>5057883
Yup very powerful filter, though as you might believe anaconda shits are insane so it's better to just drain the stock tank every time. I'll get him some live fish for enrichment though I doubt they'll last long
>>
>>5057904
>Males only get to 9-10 feet so right now he's on mega-rats, at full size in a few years I'll feed him rabbits.
Didn't know that, I was always surprised seeing them be sold at expos and such because I thought that it was completely unmanageable beyond a private zoo tier enclosure, that's a lot smaller than I thought.
>>
>>5057942
It's still a little unmanageable, they are still very very heavy snakes. Males are like 35 pounds max vs females being 100lbs and 15-16 feet. I was originally gonna breed him but honestly I don't think it's ethical to sell these guys. This is a cheap setup for my boy and its gonna be ~3000$.
>>
>>5057950
A 10 foot snake is still a 10 foot snake of course, but a lot of people keep the bigger boa species or dwarf retics which are similar in length so it's not as unfeasible as I thought.

My lizard is sick and I don't know if there are any vets in the area who know anything about reptiles. She's a small spiny tailed iguana and she hasn't been eating. She stopped eating her greens a few days ago but she was still eating corn and fruit so at least I could give her something but today she won't even eat mango. I tried putting her in some warm water to see if that would make her poop in case she was constipated but i saw her poop a couple days ago so I don't think she impacted but i'm just not sure. I'll try calling local vets but I'm not sure what else I can really do
>>
>>5058153
How long have you had her? It's pretty common for lizards to stop eating when it starts getting cold
>>
>>5058163
4 years, and there was a time when she was younegr when she stopped eating for a little while but she got over it when I made it warmer for her. But this time I'm turning on her heat lamp in the morning since it's getting colder so I don't think it's a heat issue this time

You have to generate plasma and use a leaky containment field below the tank. Leopard geckos are very difficult to reach the correct temps though, I recommend crested geckos, which you can get the correct temperature for with a commercial blast furnace.

I have a 36” x 18” x 18” tank for a corn snake that’s about a year old. Just shy of 30”. Price isn’t particularly an object but I see differing olinions on the maximum size needed for a fully grown corn. I won’t have to possibly upgrade for another year but I just don’t know what size I need to go to

18 is a big female. Assuming it's a green Anaconda, if it's a male, a lot of them top out under 13. Yellow Anaconda are smaller yet..

I'm happy it's been active in my property, when I first moved in I had one that would hang out in my front yard but it had obviously been in a fight with a cat or something, big scars all over it, ended up sending it to the vet the next year because it was barely moving. Poor guy probably died. This new one looks a lot healthier. They eat snails and slugs, so that's good news for my veggie patch.

In the next few years I want to set up a native garden in the front yard, should make it feel right at home with some wattle, senna, pig face, and native grasses.

I'm considering getting one of these. A standings day gecko. Has anyone had one? How is owning one? I heard theyre like other geckos but need less humidity.

I have owned several other geckos, Tokays and a leopard gecko. They had to be rehomed or died when I went to jail. Not in jail anymore .Need something my mom can take care of if i get locked up or psych warded again. I have a blue tongued skink that is over 25 years old currently, owned him since I was like 8. He survived me going to jail my mom fed him fruit and cat food. He likes ground beef or cat/dog food and fruits.

I wrote a whole thing and lost it, so I am going to give you the cliff notes:
>They are expensive
>They need decent sized enclosures with hides and vertical platforms
>They need good deep heat projectors and good quality UV
>Once setup they are very low maintenance and cheap to feed
>They can live 20 years
>They can be handle but they are defensive in their enclosures so you must be calm as well as swift when picking them up so you don't scare them or stress them enough for them to try and bite you
>They feel incredible to handle
>They will hide in the daytime and come out at night
>They are not too smart
>Their poop is not too bad but they can shit all over the glass in the night while climbing, although I have yet to see that personally
>You can hand feed them but they need to be in a comfortable position as well as tricked into doing it
>Leaving pots of food in their enclosure works and is easy too
>Different varieties will be different size so do your research as they can be as long as 10 or even 20 inches
>You can only have one per enclosure unless you have a breeding pair, but even then, you have to monitor them as they will injure eachother through the mating process
>Some males have small sacks which can make them appear female until another male is introduced and the territorial testosterones kick in and they grow to male size so make sure you sex them properly before getting a pair
>They jump like cats so you must keep a watch for when they posture to pounce during handling, but if you're next to their enclosure with an open door they will just jump back into it onto a branch
All in rewarding, but very different from other Geckos. If you think they will be like Leos you will be in for a culture shock but they are impressive animals. I am retard and I can look after one, but you need money to invest into doing it properly.

>>5060763

also i forgot to ask a strategy question. Ultimately this is going to house a breeding pair of gargoyle geckos. I've heard a few theories on how to best introduce, some people argue it's best to put them both in at the same time to prevent territoriality, some argue it's best to put the female in first. The female is 2 and the male is 3. Any opinions?
Their enclosures are adjacent to each other and they can smell and see each other if the male is sitting in a specific spot in his tank, and I see him sitting there on occasion so they're familiar with each other. Male occasionally vocalizes so I know he's fiending for that cloaca.

My goal is to keep them cohabbed but I also see people argue you need to pull the male after a breeding, but I also know most breeders just put a mff trio in a 40 gallon tote and call it good and some people have kept groups like this in the same tote for 15 years so idk why I worry. This is a 100 gallon, more than 2x the volume of their current tanks combined so I'm hopeful that with a few extra cork bark pieces they'll be fine together.

Another leachie anon here. Mine is a poop monster. If handled long enough, he will inevitably projectile shit all over the place. His favorite place to shit is on his glass door, forcing me to get up and clean it before it leaks on my floor. >>5061709
The enclosure looks moderately difficult to climb for a gargoyle.
You're right to worry about cohabitation after coupling. Gargoyles are notorious cannibals; someone is very likely going to lose a tail, so be prepared for that.
Be sure to keep multiple locations for food to discourage resource competition.
Before cohabitation, you can trade out pieces of bark or what have you to get them accustomed to the others' scent.
