Anyone raise annual killifish outdoors? I want to do the summer tubbing thing, but don't have space to overwimter fish.
>>5021317>its that time when your fish becoming the boring background you ignore and feel like an extra chore on weekendsfeels bad man.Buying new fish just for the shiny new thing feel is a cop out as well so i aint doing that till most of these die of old age.
>>5021335I think eventually most people hit this point if they keep boring community stuff. You either dial it back to low maintenance planted tanks or get something actually interesting to put in there.
>>5021335Plants. My fish tanks's primary purpose is to create plant water. It's the only reason I do water changes. Buy 1 gallon jars from target. Fill them up with water, gravel and plants. Cheapo led and a shelf. >>5021337That's why there's so many nano tank people. You can have like 3 or 4 in the same footprint as a large tank. Always something to do. And they are easy to blow up and start over. >>5021329I'm in the same boat. I want to put a tub out on my porch, but nov-april/may they'd need a solution. I'm in New England. I might just drag the tub inside and put a light over it and just leave it on my back porch. I could always just let the water get low and the birds will take care of it for mem
>>5021337The plants are the more interesting part for me now as well. However, I don't think I would be satisfied with all plants no fish. That would be boring.
>>5021329>I want to do the summer tubbing thing, but don't have space to overwimter fish.Bro, tons of the best looking killifish are annuals, so they die off in the winter after laying eggs. The eggs themselves need to go through a dry period before spring rains before hatching and starting the cycle all over again. Pic related. Even if you tried to keep them alive longer, very few people have a successfully kept specific specimens over a year.TL:DR; grow killifish, let them die as they naturally do during Winter.
how often do your fish die for seemingly no reason?
>>5021893Very rarely, but I don't buy inbred tetras from the lfs anymore.
>>5021317I want to keep a single betta in a 28 liter tank. It will have a couple of plants and duckweed. Do I need filtration?I plan to vacuum the gravel quite often.
>Decide to set up first real aquarium>Rearrange living room to accommodate>Few hundred dollars for tank, stand, and equipment>Hours of research and planning>Meticulously arrange decor>Drive all over town to get live plants>2 months later nitrogen cycle finally done>Finally ready for stocking>Add shrimp two days ago>This afternoon notice a crack forming at the top of the tankFun hobby
>>5021963That sucks bro. But your biological media, hardscape, plants, and fish can all be transferred to a new tank with no ill effects. No need to wait around another two months.
>>5020884>What does Simon mean?it means you need to lurk moar>they always develop some type of bloat that prevents them from swimming to the surfacein all seriousness, though: does that only happen in community tanks, or did it happen to you with bettas kept by themselves, too?
>>5021963You get to spend more money and that is the true essence of owning fish
Does anyone have any experience with Lyretail anthias? I ordered 3 (one male 2 females) for my 200g tank they're the first real fish since supposedly they'll make my watchman goby come out of hiding. Also, any tips for quarantine or should you really only worry about that on more susceptible fish like tangs?
>>5022027I quarantine all fish, generally per the suggested protocol at humble.fish. But, one of the issues with this quarantine protocol is that the meds may suppress appetite, which is no bueno for anthias. Last time I did it with anthias, it was fine though. They all kept eating.I do have a slightly different method though as I don't rely on minimal feeding/water changes to keep up water quality (both of which can stress out the fish), as I use pre-cycled, well-established spare media that has been in my main display's sump for months, if not years (every time I use a bunch, I put more in).I understand it's not a protocol that everyone can feasibly follow as it takes quite a bit of time and space.
Anybody knows wtf is this big white thing? On the left is ramshorn eggs. I have only shrimps, ramshorns and melanias in the tank. Tank is 3 months old and nothing new was added since the initial planting/stocking.
>>5022063Looks like a freshwater limpet, harmless and pretty common, probably just came in on a plant.
>>5022082I do have limpets and they are flat and like 4 times smaller even the bigger ones. If this is a limpet it's a fuckhueg one. Also it doesn't move.
>>5021929>a couple of plants and duckweed. Do I need filtration?Sounds like you already have filtration>a couple of plants and duckweed
>>5022063Looks like a bladder snail to me.
>>5021929If it's a single betta why would you vacuum the gravel often? Just don't over feed. If you let the duckweed grow (and throw away handfuls at a time) it will keep the nitrates in check and the cycle will do everything else. You could get away with changing a gallon a week, no water change if you just get a sponge filter.
>he likes snails
I did my bi-annual 25% water change on my planted tank today. Upon completion I decided to double check my research on why I bother to do this. Nitrates and TDS are well managed by my plants. I was going on the replenishment of minerals idea, however, my data on that was never solid to begin with. I kept doing it out of routine and the fact that I do always see a growth spurt from my plants after this water change. I found an article that seems to be pretty good about the reasons for water changes in planted aquaria and scenarios where they can be useful to address specific problems. It's very frustrating doing research on this because the internet is flooded with Karen lore based on feels and whatever the hivemind says. https://glassboxdiaries.com/aquarium-water-changes/
>>5021317I have spider mites all over the plants atop the tank on the right. Has anyone else dealt with these before. How likely are my plants to die? I would prefer to not have to remove the plants because im lazy. I just ordered some persimilis mites to eat them. Hopefully that will help.Otherwise in the tank on the right there are 6 dwarf red platys. Some stone catfish and some amano shrimp. The tank on the left has 8 cpds, 8 pygmy corydoras and 7 amanos and 1 ghost shrimp and lots of bladder snail friends.
>>5022298Mites are a total bitch to get rid of. I've never managed to do it without 3-4 uses of different insecticides. Fucking cunts are immortal. Fuck I hate them.
The mothers are dining with the kids
Though the shrimp and snail eat all the wafers he is still round
>>5022297The main reason for water changes in planted tanks is kind of glossed over but I'm impressed it was actually mentioned at all since it's usually ignored. It's the build up of organics that goes on to cause many problems and tends to be the fuel for bacterial outbreaks that cause a large proportion of livestock issues and it's unclear as to whether substrate bacteria does a good job of keeping in check. Worth remembering that even if you don't feed much then you still get a lot of organic waste from plant processes and breakdown. The comment about top offs not affecting tds is a bit handwavey though, depends entirely on the make up of your water and if you have any leeching hardscape.
Anyone have experience with Pea Puffers? I want to keep 10-12 in a 29 gallon that's heavily planted.
>>5022348My thought on water change is if it's a display tank and/or an overstock knock yourself out. There's no denying it keeps the water crystal clear amd the gravel clean. Be prepared to supplement and tinker to keep everyone happy, but the tank will shine. I personally hate having the move all my floaters around so I do minimal water changes, as I said earlier just to water my plants. It's clear enough and I don't overfeed. For hobby tanks, heavily planted barely needs water change. I'd be curious how much inert waste actually builds up. Almost all organic matter breaks down into CHONP. As long as there's some flow it would get mechanically ground to particles and eaten. Plus if you do something like wipe the biolfilm off the glass you are cleaning nutrients out of the tank. Everyone's magic tank isn't self healing. I would imagine the non-chonp is so trace it years to be noticeable.
>>5022348>It's the build up of organics that goes on to cause many problems and tends to be the fuel for bacterial outbreaksyou mean a build-up of nitrates? because that literally never happens in a heavily planted tank.>top offs not affecting tds is a bit handwavey thoughhe said he has floating plants - tds going up with topoffs is also something that never really happens
>>5022597>you mean a build-up of nitrates? No. Plants release sugars, proteins and a whole bunch of other stuff like the article mentioned. These are consumed by other bacteria with ammonia as the waste product then to nitrate, it doesn't start out that way.
>>5022606I mean... As long as it's a mature tank, that shouldn't be a problem. I haven't had a bacterial bloom in years.I also haven't had a bunch of plants die at the same time, either.
>>5022597No, DOCs and detritus in general that creates DOCs. Nitrates are irrelevant and honestly in and of themselves aren't that dangerous. Even at 80-100ppm nitrate it's not acutely toxic. You might knock 20-30% off the lifespan of a fish sitting at that level chronically but to get acute effects on common freshwater species you need hundreds and hundreds of parts per million. DOCs will feed heterotrophic bacteria which can go pathogenic at sufficiently high concentrations. Or in the case of a high-acidity tank at ~6.4 or lower will feed mycobacterium (which are suppressed by competition with normal heterotrophic bacteria in normal pH conditions, mycobacterium tolerate low pH better) which results in mycobacteriosis (fish TB). This can be addressed by having high filter media:water ratio and a healthy community of heterotrophic bacteria in your filter, by UV sterilization or by feeding in proportion to your system's overall capacity to 'digest' organic compounds.
I think the cycle in my 5.5 gallon is almost complete after 24 days, my parameters are:pH 7.6Ammonia: 0 ppmNitrites: 0.25 ppmNitrates: 0 ppmMy plants have grown considerably over the last few days, so I think they absorbed all the nitrates. Can I still raise a healthy shrimp colony if ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are all at 0 ppm? Note that I also have a ton of different microfauna in my tank, everything from copepods, ostracods, and detritus worms.
>>5022677Of course
>>5022677>microfaunayestests are a useful tool but should not be the primary criteria you use for identifying if your tank is ready, or doing well.i stopped testing a year ago and run 100% vibequariums now though i've been moving towards that for several years now. screwed myself several times getting myopia on test parameters. big risk you run is fixating on what you can measure and assign an easy number to when the more qualitative and ambiguous factors are more important to maintaining a tank longterm.

>>5022841You should add the tangs last as they are known to be aggressive. When you get your tangs, try buying juveniles. Add a Pistol Shrimp to keep your Watchman Goby company.
How long should I let this cure for? Using it to attach an led light strip from Amazon to my tank's hood. Do I need to wait the full 24 hours for the best bond strength?
>>5022848yea juveniles preferably all at once I'm a bit worried about how they'd treat the foxface but aslong as he's added first there shouldn't be a problem non? and yea I got him a tiger pistol shrimp yesterday I didn't see him with him though it is a big tank after all.
>>5022851would be added* only thing in there is the watchman but I'm gonna add a foxface & midas blenny tomorrow but I need to find a makeshift lid for the blenny so it doesn't kill itself first surely cardboard will do the trick?
This guy's camouflage is way too good. He avoided my corals but I kinda wanted him to raid my zoas for some color. Can Decorator Crabs "drop" their attached parts or do i have to wait for a molt to try again?
>>5022850super glue is called super because of how fast it cures, not because of it's strength, I wouldn't give it 10 seconds like the label says but 15 mins is probably overkill
>>5022851>>5022852I've seen tangs bully foxfaces but it's not common because it's generally a bad idea to fuck with dem venomous spines. Usually only the more aggressive acanthurus tangs like clown tangs and sohal tangs will be bold enough to try to bully them if they have enough size on the foxface.I like your fish choices; I'd keep a sharp eye on the zebrasoma tangs though, most people find that tangs in the same genus have a stronger tendency to not play nice with each other - not that there's any guarantees with tangs in general though, sometimes they're just fine and other times you get assholes. Gems and purples are both gorgeous so I can't blame you.Otherwise I think your stocking plan is solid, I might consider some more inverts but I'm honestly not sure what the earmuff wrasse might end up wanting a taste of.Speaking of the earmuff, he might end up going for the pistol shrimp as well (again, not really sure). Assuming you have snails it might be a good thing since in my experience pistol shrimp can go on snail murder sprees. Is your tank eurobraced? If not I'd make sure that cardboard lid is on tight; some blennies and wrasses can be pretty notorious escape artists, but you're (probably) fine for a short time.
I had a dream that somebody had managed to dress my gourami as Henry VIII while I wasn’t looking, and I had to spend quite some time trying to catch him and gently get him out of the costume that he clearly didn’t like. When I woke up, I immediately found that the color of my water had been turned golden yellow by the tannins I had been trying to introduce. The King’s wealth had visited my tank.
>>5022969>Speaking of the earmuff, he might end up going for the pistol shrimp as well (again, not really sure). Assuming you have snails it might be a good thing since in my experience pistol shrimp can go on snail murder sprees.I need to add snails I just have a fighting conch I rarely see since it only comes out at night and like 50 hermit crabs and as long as the pistol shrimp is paired before I find the guy I'm sure they'll be fine and no, it's not so I'll just have to tape it up with a cardboard lid for the time being
>>5022850>>5022938Couple things to note about Cyanoacrylate. It cures when it comes in contact with water, so you can speed it up a bit by actually wetting it. If you are really impatient and somehow worried about bond strength, you can use an accelerator, such as this one:https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/insta-set-super-glue-accelerator-bob-smith-industries.htmlYes, it's aquarium safe (at least this particular brand; it's relabeled Bob Smith Industries). I've use it on hardscape and coral frags all the time. Be aware though that the reaction that speeds up the curing process also creates a surprising amount of heat.>>5022880Yes. You can detach it yourself if you want. They're attached via bristles on the carapace. They're just like hooked hairs. But there is no guarantee they'll like your zoas more, ever.
>>5023239>>5022850>>5022938Oh I should add, the insta-set stuff makes it cure within seconds generally, however thickness plays a part. A giant glob is going to take a while even with insta-set. If you are just attaching strip lights though, it'll be instant. In all honesty, you shouldn't be too concerned about cure time. You'll be using such a thin layer it'll likely set faster than how long it took you to type out your post. If your LED system is water proofed, just spray it with some water.
So I got a midas and a foxface yesterday I'm worried about the foxface since he's been hiding a lot and still this discolored but I think he ate all the nori I gave him down to the clip itself so that's surely a good sign how many nori strips should I feed him daily since it's currently a fowlr tank? I only fed him one and ripped it in half since it's kind of long.
>>5023491Foxfaces/Rabbits are super shy and timid, especially when first introduced. The discolor is camouflage when stressed, the red at the base of the pectoral fins is concerning though.
I'm posting otos until you want an oto (or 8)
>>5023751Thinking of getting one for my little tetra tank.Got a little 10gal with 10 glow light tetras, a bunch of anubias, and some pothos out the top.I keep thinking that having one in there will help keep all those big anubias leaves clean. What ya think? Good/bad idea?
>>5023800One? You mean eight.
>>5023800Good Idea but i think you can get 2!
>>5023803>>5023804Lol. They are cute lil guys, I'd rather have one fat one than a couple (or 4) skinny, though. I keep hearing different things on em. One place says "at least 6", another says "a few is better so they always can find food". I've seen a lot of little tanks with one or two, tops. So I'm thinking I'll try one and if need be, I'll get it a buddy. My tank has been running for years now, should be good there. I got gravel instead of sand as substrate is my only concern, but I figure it's not super sharp and there's plenty of leaves, wood, and a big ol rock to suck on, should be fine.Any tips?
>>5023751Unironically want one now. You may have just inspired my future fish purchase!
>>5023813You will not regret it.
I know it's because the wild type gene is dominant but it's cool to see all the weird mutts you get even with "high grade" parents.
What kind of shrimp is he? Wild type?Rili cull?
>>5024188Cool foxy shrimp
>>5023491>how many nori stripsAren't those things salty? So if you feed them a bunch, the salinity of your tank goes up?
>>5023751Other than zucchini, what else do you feed them?I was thinking of getting some, but I have snails that clean up the walls already; and I know they don't eat hair algae, I'd just add them because... I don't have enough bottom feeders?
Can discus and/or angelfish be kept by themselves? My gym has one aquarium for each with some smaller fish/inverts and they have thrived for a very long time
>>5024430I also feed them algae wafers, but it took them like 2 weeks to recognise it as food
>>5024439It's always the can you/should you. Obviously you actually can and they'll do okay but it doesn't make sense to me to want to keep an animal and not have it under as ideal conditions as possible. Discus are schooling fish and hang out with 10s of other discus in the wild and while you can't really recreate that at home I think they shouldn't really be kept alone, it's like having a dog and leaving it at home all day alone. I don't know about angelfish in the wild but it's probably the same way. You can argue with angelfish that when they're kept alone their temperament can improve and they nip less and that's "better", but only for the other inhabitants. Ideally you'd want more angelfish and sturdier tank mates rather than keeping an angelfish alone so it doesn't shred your small fish.
Is it possible to get rid of black algae, or control it? It is now covering my white sand substrate.
>>5024926if it's Black Beard Algae, you should get some Siamese Algae Eaters.
I have a betta living in a twenty gallon aquarium with some black mollys, some corydoras, and several apple snails. He displayed no signs of illness, a visible abscess having healed a few weeks ago by now, and was fed late at night. I woke up the next day and went to work, and then got home late at night. When I looked to feed the fish, the betta wasn't in there. I searched the surrounding floors and surfaces and did not find him, suspecting a jump, though I've personally never seen bettas jump, I have heard that they do so, and did not find him, nor did a breakdown of the aquarium's furnishings reveal him hiding anywhere or his remains. Little to no agonistic behavior was observed between the betta and the other aquarium inhabitants, not even the mollys, I believe because of their dark coloring. Am I to assume that he randomly died at some point overnight or during the day, and the snails ate the remains so quickly that it appeared as if he vanished? This is the only conclusion I have come to. Fishbros, discuss.
>>5021317I've just brought gravel coated with polyurethane (black). How much it is supposed to last that coating? I dont think that is gonna be permanent. And I can still get a refund.
>>5025050I think it's unlikely the snails ate him so fast. Check behind and inside the filter for remains
>>5025056The filter can be ruled out; it is a simple sponge filter without a potentially dangerous intake.
>>5025050Do you have a cat or a dog? Maybe he jumped and got eaten?
>>5025078I do have a small chihuahua-terrier who would probably eat a random fish she found, and she was in the room overnight. That is a possible explanation. That being said, I've never seen a betta actually jump, and any actual instance of such would surprise me.
>>5025079Sorry but pretty much all fish will jump even bottom feeders never mind bettas which are known for it. If you refuse to get a tight fitting lid you're likely to get deaths.
>>5025050To give another option: Its also entirely possible that the other fish ate him as well. Bettas have beenvknown, especially domestic splendens, to randomly die with no outward signs of what could have caused it. My theory is he died sometime in the night and the other fish and snails took care of the remains. I had a betta not long ago that had disappeared while I was out of town. When I returned and couldnt find her, I hunted everywhere for any dead body or signs of a jump, even though I had a tight fitting lid. The only other thing in the tank where a small number of shrimp and a medium population of scuds with a nerite or two. Yet I couldnt find anything at all, so this small crew managed to eat her within a few days.
Nice fishes. Now for some carved Halloween pumpkin cheek shrimp.

I want to lvl up my hardscape from throwing some rocks and branches in the tank. What is a good option to glue lava rock pieces together?
>>5025803>What is a good option to glue lava rock pieces together? The method I have seen on youtube for this is to stack your rocks in the tank as you want them, ball up small bits of paper towel, stick them in cracks between the rocks where you want to attach them, then saturate the paper towel clumps with super glue. In this application you want normal thin super glue so it soaks in to the paper towel (not the gel variety).
I took this punished betta fish girl home from my workplace to try to heal her. Do you think she stands a chance? I started antibacterial treatment and fasting.
Anyone here uses purigen for their filtration?I need to find 8.25% hypocholrite bleach to clean it, but the stores near me have all stopped including their ingredients on their bleach or it's 6% with useless chemicals added in.Is there a good brand I could buy online or amazon that isn't fake shit and guarantees me the 8% hypocholrite?
I have an idea for a 29 gallon community tank involving Pea Puffers modelled after someone else's tank who managed to successfully breed them.15-17 Pea Puffers5 Kuhli Loaches6 Amano ShrimpTons of Neocaridina (apparently the Peas go crazy for baby shrimp).Kuhlis and Amanos will be the cleanup crew, picking up whatever the Peas leave behind. According to the guy I was talking to, the Peas get really curious about the Amanos but don't attack them. The tank will be heavily planted, including aquaponics with Pothos.I'm going overboard on filtration, opting to have a double sponge filter (rated for 40 gallons) and a Fluval U3 filter to add flow to the tank since the Peas' natural habitats are rivers.Thoughts?
Fish bros, question on temp. Does it matter that much? My house is never under 75 in the summer and rarely above 68 in the winter. My goldfish and danios don't seem to give a shit. I know there's exotics that have demanding standards, but for a non-breeding tank, is a gourami going to drop dead in 68? As for the coldwater goldfish, my tank got went over 85 for a few days during a recent heatwave and no one seemed to give a shit. Also, red root float. Awesome but also a gigantic pain in the ass. I pull a fistful out of the tank every week. The light green ones are baby red roots floaters. They flower and spawn in addition to crazy vegetative growth.
>>5026223Short term it's definitely not a problem and you're not going to have deaths even if you don't acclimate when transferring over small temperatures. I know it can be a touchy topic for the fish police but lots of people believe that it's more dangerous to keep fish that have been shipped in their polluted water for an extra hour all stressed out than to cross a temp and water param difference.Long term though I don't think there's a lot of proper research or experimentation, most care sheet temps aren't scientific they're just "worked for me lol". Theres a concern about long term cortisol build up in less than ideal temperatures and you should do you best to only keep species that suit the temps you can run but seasonal variation isn't a big deal. My tank went from 23 to 28/29 for several weeks this year after I moved and basic bitch community species with the standard 22-26 label were fine. But goldfish and danios are remarkably hardy and I'd not trust smashed and slammed bettas with colder water than recommended like you said with exotics.
>>5025986Can't you just use more bleach and dilute it less?
>>5026223There's a lot of stuff that do better in water slightly cooler than 78F. For instance Crystal Red Shrimp breed better. In general though most fish we keep in the hobby are pretty tolerant of a wide range. If you're really worried about it, just get a heater dude. It's way easier to heat a tank than cool it.
>>5026329>But goldfish and danios are remarkably hardyYeah the goldfish and danios are beasts. I'm pretty convinced they don't have actual parameters lol, just don't drop them in acid. I probably could just warm.up the tank a little and add something more tropical. >>5026511>If you're really worried about it, just get a heater dudeI have a heater, I just don't use it. Water temp is perfect for Goldfish. I'm finally going to fill out the tank and was seeing if I could add anything other than Goldfish and minnows. My other thought was shiners or some other north American fish, but they are rare in stores and even online.
So what's wrong with my betta? I was gone for a week and left the feeding to my parents and when im back it's like she ate a ball, can't find anything online about this. She wasn't like this when I left.
>>5026892Lol pretty obvious what happened. Unless your parents are fish people or you drew a diagram of the amount to feed, they probably overfed. Shelled peas or spirulina flakes for a couple days should help.
>>5026926The other betta is fine not bloated at all I guess this one must have run around the tank and scoop all the food my parents threw into the tank
>>5026890I saw some at tropco (if you're in the UK) recently buy they're out of stock now. Might be worth emailing them and seeing when they might get some more.
>>5021317How important is good TDS? My test strips say everything is in order, a little bit on the harder side, but still fine for what i have in there but my TDS measuring thing reports values above the norm and i noticed that there is very little baby making going on. Had a tank where the same species were breeding like crazy.
>>5027355TDS doesn't affect adult fish outside of extremes really (either extreme tds or extreme sensitivity, but even things like discus can be raised in hard water) but can make breeding literally impossible above a certain level. I think for many soft water fish for example their eggs get damaged when exposed to the calcium that makes up GH in most hard water sources. Depends on what you've got.

>>5028979>fuck cleaning aquariumsjust be careful not to disturb the substrate or you end up like >>5028600
>>5028979>I asked a friend about how often he did water changes and he told me he just tops it off with water from the garden hose, no anti chlorine, never measures ph/ammonia and the aquarium is like 8 years old at this pointIs it a planted tank?
>>5028979His garden hose comes from well water and has no chlorine. It’s the only explanation. But other than that, I don’t doubt it. The only reason I do water changes in mine is to clean the substrate (mostly for aesthetical reasons) and to maybe keep down shit that accumulates in there from the top-offs. A properly setup mature aquarium won’t really have nitrogen issues, unless that issue is not having enough of it, needing additional fertilization.
>>5028984no, plastic decoration onlyhe has a plate filter or something
>>5028988how many fish and what kind?
>>5028990fuck he named a few but I don't rememberthere weren't that many
Uhhh, what the fuck is this worm
>>5024926Audoinella is a bitch. It is associated with flow, cold water and high calcium. If you want to get rid of it, you need to fix your calcium/magnesium ratio. They shed off spores by touching it, no never scrub it ever.
I want to have triops again so im getting a new aquarium. The last one had lots of flora and small fauna but i had an issue with the insane amount of snails that were procreating. I raised the moss to take a look after the triops died and there was so much snail shit that it clouded the water. I saw this tank as a failure and sold it and took a break. At the same time i have a big one with fishes and it doesn't have a snail plague. What can i do to prevent another repeat besides getting assassin snails?
This ember tetra is very round, does it look okay?
>>5028979My tank is five years old and it's had two water changes total. The last one was three years ago.Floating plants + lots of snails is the winning combo.
>>5029039Why is your substrate purple? Cyano outbreak?
>>5029209>insane amount of snails>so much snail shit that it clouded the waterHow much were you feeding that tank? That's definitely not normal.
>>5029270>How much were you feeding that tank?Almost nothing, that's the thing. I put some cucumbers or something similar in there and let the triops feed for an hour or two. After that i removed the food from the aquarium. Basically all the food that entered the aquarium was immediately used by the triops with 0 waste. Plants still grew nicely however and towards the end i almost didn't need to do water changes even. That aquarium had no filter and im not planning on giving the new one either.>That's definitely not normal. That is why im confused too. I have another tank with fish and shrimps and while food gets wasted the snail population is well under control. So how could my trips tank have so many despite its tiny food intake?
>>5029271Also that triops tank was around 20L. probably relevant. The new one will have 60L and the mixed tank i have currently running is 200L.
>>5029271Also forgot to say that the old tank had bacteria blooms sometimes too. Again i don't get how that is possible if only enough food to feed the triops entered the tank. There were only around 5 of them in there and even less grew to an impressive size. After they all died i naturally stopped feeding the tank but the snails kept getting more and more, how can this be? I didn't see them eat any plants.
>>5023751>>5023800Well... You did it. Proud owner of two new oto juvies. They seem to be doing well! Still a bit skittish when there's lots of movement around the tank, but they chill on the glass and anubias just fine. Only been a couple days, but I'm kinda enchanted with em. Neat little dudes, ain't they?
>>5029297blessed
>>5029241It's probably right at the limit of where I'd be concerned, the females do get quite round probably before scattering eggs but they're susceptible to bloat/dropsy as well. Just wait and see if it gets worse.
Here’s an idea I had for a heavily planted 29 gallon tall community tank.-8 Khuli Loaches-Neocaridina Shrimp-6 Amano Shrimp-3 Sparkling Gourami-8 Pygmy Cories-12 Ember Tetras-4 Nerite SnailsI have 2 filters, a Hygger Double Sponge filter and a Fluval U3 which will be set to the lowest setting (obviously I'm going overboard on filtration). It will be heavily planted, think floaters, stem plants, and moss. Any recommendations for fish that swim at the top of the water column?Thoughts?
>>5029448thanks anon, I'll keep an eye on the fish, for now they act normal
>finally get ph down to 7.4>install air pump>ph 8.2On the plus side, it doesn't fluctuate like crazy anymore. Used to change by up to 0.5 at random. Now it goes +/-0.1 over several days.
Couple questions. >does anyone have a baffle recommendation for their filter? The ones I use work well, but the clips break after a couple of months and I am tired of replacing them. Alternatively, has anyone ever run a medium fancy goldfish tank with just two spong filters? I have tons of floaters and fast growing stem plants. That's mainly why I want to drop the HOB, it messes up the plants without a baffle.
how many of you run a quarantine tank?
>>5029738nah. i mean i understand the idea but nah.
>>5029624Just gas your tank with co2.>>5029708Sponge filters are very efficient, if a hob managed to sustain the system, 2 spent filters might even be an upgrade.>>5029484Too much bioload. Might cause algae issues.>>5029738Yeah. But I understand that it’s pretty hard to do nowadays, with space being so limited and all.
>>5029738Yes, for both freshwater and saltwater. I'm at a point now where I could set up several other systems with old equipment anyway.
>>5029772Nay, I wanna do as little maintenance as possible. I don't want a stupid co2 pump
I thought my catfish died or where in the process of dying but turns out that they were just sleeping and waiting for food. As soon as i turned off the pump they immediately sprung into action and started vacuuming the entire substrate. Funny little trolls.
>>5030023>theyDoes your catfish have blue hair, a giant belly, and nose piercings?
>>5029974Decaying leaves can add acidity to the water. That's one of the more common ways. Obviously it isn't a permanent solution. You have a bigger issue though. An air pump shouldn't increase your pH that much. Mine didn't change enough for the test kit to register. You either have something else adding alkalinity or your KH is wicked low. Are you an Oz by any chance? They all seem to have absurdly hard water.
>>5029974This isn't for you then. Even in a planted tank, you'd need to do maintenance on some level.
>>5030111no its multiple. fucking 'where', WERE. You don't say 'catfishes' but still 'catfish' when its multiple right?
>>5030138No, it's 100% the air pump.. there is 0 doubt. I did some testing with my tap water after finding an old reddit thread. I took 200ml of tap water, measured it's temp, turbidity, µS/cm and pH with my electric stick thingy. Out of the tap it was >27.5°C, 7.25 pH, 544µS/cm, 272ppmThen I let it stand free in my room for 24hours and measured again.>25.7°C, 8.2 pH, 550µS/cm, 278ppmSo it's as the people on reddit said, my tap water is pumped full of gas that changes the pH. Letting it air out over 24hours gives me the "real pH".. and that's exactly what my airpump does. Helps get rid of too many gasses. I live in switzerland, we have about the hardest water on the planet as far as I know. If I stick any test strip in it, it glows purple like it's radioactive.>>5030149I do maintenance. I collect dead things, cut my plants back, replant cut plant parts, vacuum the sand floor, clean my pump thoroughly and it's filter, take the wood decor out and scrub it off, razor blade the glass.. I just don't wanna do maintenance on water and it's parameters if that makes sense. I just wanna mix my RO water with my tap water in a bucket to achieve my wanted parameters and then drop it in with the little drip tube I built.
>>5030138Oh uhh.. to add, why my water fluctuated so brutally is ofc because of stuck gasses slowly getting out.. and I have to refill every 2-3 days cause I use a big fan to cool my water which evaporates a shitload.. so it keeps getting fed 7.25pH and then airs out over several days, rising to 8pH, then another shock by 7.25pH.. repeat.. But now I know I have to let my water stand for a day at least, then mix it with my RO water and everything is stable. Already did tests and it works perfectly.
>thought we were finally through the worst of the heat>Come home from work to my tank at 29cFug
>>5030259I can relate.
i hope the eggs from my rainbows hatch
It's over, he can never get his algae wafers again
>>5030827this planaria in the center of the photo is triggering me
>>5030834ah yeah, i noticed them today, I have no idea where they came from as I never had them before. Tried to manualy remove the ones I found as I don't want to use any poison in this tank.
>>5030844Well if you have fish that eat them it's shouldn't be a problem. I have a shrimp tank and wondering if I should nuke it with some deworming chems.
I eradicated algae from my tank with mystery chemicals and now I'm running an aggressive estimative index fertilizing cycle. And now I bought a light that is physically capable of blinding a man at a glance. Wish me luck.
>>5031185UV-C?Yeah, honestly be careful with that.
>>5031186Nah, UV-C is not photosyntetically active so there's no point. It has UV-A and many thousands of lumens, though.
>>5031191Okay, I'd still wear sunglasses while using it.
I want my new tank to be as natural and self cycling as possible. How many similar sized fish would fit in a heavily planted 60L tank with minimal to no filters and water changes?
>>5031342Also how am i even supposed to relocate them after the new aquarium is done? They all mostly blend in and like to hide. Out of the three i posted only this one is constantly visible and i could only see one other for a split second.I don't want to rip out all plants to catch them.
>>5031351>>5031342I don’t get why so many people like these shitter “no filter and no water change” aquariums. Adding a filter alone would hardly increase the maintenance and help with so many things.
>>5031357Sometimes sound is the issue.
>>5031357Its not really about maintenance and the fish themselves are only a part of why i like aquariums. I aquatically had a good one running for a while.Dunno how to explain but i don't watch the fish but the cycle instead. A aquarium needing assistance like that is not really a habitat i want to run or watch. If that means that the fish population has to be in the single digits even with an oversized tank then so be it.Maybe a wave maker would be a good idea however.>>5031359That's a factor too but running one for a couple of hours a day would still be a huge help. While its not for noise reasons i have a 20L filter serving a 200L aquarium and its working fine. Half of the animals in there just eat the plants that are growing there and i still need to trim them because of how well it works.
I have planaria. I haven't seen any in my main tank, but my plant jars have planaria and I've swapped plants back and forth. How big of a deal is this for my main tank? I have cherry shrimp but the colony is thriving even with goldfish. I'd normally just dose deformed, but I have snails too and I'd prefer to not have to rip the tank apart. Is there any use for the worms? Since I have a contained jar I was thinking about cultivating them there.
>>5031370the golfish should keep the planaria in check. There may be some shrimp losses in the future but if they are thriving they should withstand it without issues.Had some worms too that were overstepping and once the predators were old enough they lead a genocide against them and forced them underground again.>I have a contained jar I was thinking about cultivating them there. There are probably better works to cultivate like regular detritus worms since they are not considered a pest and are mostly harmless. Only use case for your planaria is probaly as live food for fish in a rearing tank. I wouldn't set them free somewhere where they could hide.If you like the idea of cultivating worms as i said detritus ones are a lot better.
>>5031375Also chances are that you already have planaria in your main tank too if the related ones have it. You just don't see them because they are eaten before there are too many of them. i wouldn't worry until the shrimp are actually attacked.
>>5031382Yeah I assume that I do. I haven't seen any yet but I'm sure they are there. My main culprit would have them introduced around a month ago. I think they thrived because my auto feeder fed more than I anticipated when I went on vacation. I had visible detritus worms when I got back. I might just pull the snails and dose all my tanks and jars with de-wormer. Bleach your live plants. Finding this out every day.
I let it get out of control. Removing all the floating plants and only adding clean ones back in would be easy enough but the fucking shrimps are basically living upside down in it. Doesn't seem possible to do it in a reasonable amount of time without losses.
>>5031398>out of controlNo no that is an adequate duckweed coverage. I still see some gaps.
>>5031412thank you for your insight, please accept this clip of my amano shidding
>>5031396you don't really need to use de-wormer. Even planaria is useful. The more diverse the tank the better i think. Just feed less and put some trust in your fish. This is like overusing antibiotic when you don't even need to. De-wormer would do way more harm than good in your case. Especially now that you will probably feed your fish less they will be more on the lookout for wild food. Clearing the plant jars of them however sounds like a good idea. You don't need them there and there is no predator to control their population.
>>5031398i use a flat comb to gather duckweed. shrimp just scatters.
>>5031360> Dunno how to explain but i don't watch the fish but the cycle instead. A aquarium needing assistance like that is not really a habitat i want to run or watch. But ecosystems like that don’t really exist in stagnant water. The filter just reproduces some of the natural processes that happen in the habitats. And they are more silent than wavemakers.>>5031370Fenbendazole will get rid of them if they are a bother.
>>5031421>ecosystems like that don’t really exist in stagnant waterreally depends. The first tank i had that was like this quite literately was a replica of stagnant pool. These fish however don't live in such waters, hence artificial flow.>The filter just reproduces some of the natural processes that happen in the habitatsWell, most of those processes also happen without it. The filter just compresses most of the work into a small footprint so you can have more fish in the same volume of water.Ignoring the filtering and stuff aside i just like low population tanks the most anyways. >And they are more silent than wavemakers. That is hard to believe. If you think about it its just a filter but without the filter part. Even if that were the case i don't see why you can't run a undersized filter without the filter medium in place of a wavemaker. After all that's what im already sorta doing with the 200L tank. There is no way the few square centimeters of said filter have a measurable effect on that tank.Might change my mind however. But if i were getting a fulter it would be a Undergravel one Using these artificial filter mediums that die without the pump running just feels wrong. Recreating the sediment currents however also fits my criteria of a 'real' habitat. Don't see why i would need it still. If the tank handles its inhabitants without it saving on potential noise and unneeded complexity is still something i like to do.Anyways how long does it take for corydora to grow this big? I have kept some healthy ones for years and they never looked this menacing. Usually new fish like to hide and don't eat for a bit but this one confidently chills in the open and eats in front of everyone. I really like this behavior.
>>5031416I tried with something similar but I can't get it all. I want it properly gone.
>>5031342yeah nevermind. These will stay in the existing one. Its bigger and there is no reason to split the herd.
>>5031357I like flowers and plants. The fish are just there to feed them. It's easy enough to keep it all alive and working together. Now, I'll agree that using filters, pumps, heaters, and all that makes it easier and generally more clean looking, but there's always low-tech, blackwater, pond-lovers. Different strokes for different folks. Hell, just multiple tanks can vary if you're into that; a guppy tank, to a cichlid tank, to salt water. There's lots to experiment with. For me, I can't get into the super-sciencey aspects of the hobby. I like trying to recreate biomes, like, the right fish, plants, rocks, flow... I know my life would be easier if I learned to use a microscope and more technical equipment, but I don't try anything too exotic or extreme that makes it necessary. I don't want to do homework, I just want cool stuff to look at.
My aquarium came with this light but i dunno if its safe to use for aquatic animals. It a cold light also while the reptile ones i have seen are warmer. Is this a nothingburger or do i need something else? Any reason not to go with LED if i need to buy something new?
>>5031480They really won't give a shit.
>>5031482So the tank wont be sterilized by UV cancer rays?
>>5031483The sun exists.
Will this be a problem in the future? There is no cracked line in the glass but this corner is a little scary. Have not put water in there yet.
>>5031462If you like flowers and plants that's an even better argument for high tech plants as they can look impressive with the right setup. And, again, the difference in maintenance is not very big. The only daily task is your fertilizer routine. They do cost a lot more, obviously. >>5031480I'm pretty sure reptile lights have UV-B light to simulate tanning. Water filters out, like, 90% of it, so it wont really be harmful to the fish, but 15w is not a lot of potency and a considerable amount of it will go to something that you dont really use.
>>5031592Wont be a problem. But do place your aquarium on a piece of foam to distrute the weight.
Anyone use the online fish stores in America and have a reco? I'm assuming they are all decent, but wanted avoid hassle more than anything.
>>5031609Can't lie that Dutch style tanks aren't impressive. But I'd worry that's beyond me, lol. Maybe when I've got more experience.
Is there something similar to a dwarf crayfish but doesn't carry the crayfish plague? My tank is a bit too small for a yabby and since i cannot avoid cross contamination between my tanks any american species, which includes the dwarf crayfish, is sadly out of the question.Doesn't really have to be pretty but at least tolerate european summer temperatures. I can build the entire tank and choose species around it.

Anybody with thai microcrab experience? I know they're a bit of a meme and like to disappear but they've popped up cheap and my nano fish don't even bother with my baby shrimp at half the size.

>>5031867Reddit is almost always wrong, for what its worth.
Yo /Aq/. looking to get my first tank.Don't have space for a monster tank so I was thinking something in the 50-60l range with filter and heater. Was thinking to get 10-12 platys, my local seems to have a persistent sale on platy fry and I was hoping to breed them in the future so the colony self sustains - maybe even sell some back to the shop $$$ - throw in a Betta as a showpiece and a few shrimp to help clean up anything the fish don't eat , maybe a snail for luck. I know it seems quite a bit but tap water is free and I can afford to daily water changes.Does this all sound reasonable?
>>5032080>maybe even sell some back to the shop $$$how common of a practice is this? I only know of people selling on craigslist or something.
>>5032084I'm not expecting much, maybe enough store-credit to cover the cost of flakes.
I'm pulling my hair out trying to decide what type of substrate to use in my heavily planted 29 gallon Pea Puffer tank. I don't know if I should just do pool sand and occasionally add liquid fertilizer, use aquasoil capped with sand, or any of the other countless methods out there. If it helps, here is the list of plants I would like to get:Java Moss, Limnophila Sessiliflora, Hornwort, Hydrocotyle varieties, Salvinia, Frogbit, Tiger Lotus, Pearlweed, Monte Carlo, and Water Lettuce.Advice greatly appreciated.
>>5032225I'd either do aquasoil or aquasoil topped with sand. Not necessarily pool sand, it's not very pretty.
>>5032240By pool sand I meant just some inert black sand. Sorry I was typing too fast.
>>5031609>Water filters out, like, 90% of it, so it wont really be harmful to the fishWhat about the bacteria? I have read that fish farms use UV to clean the water as one of their steps.Definitely need to replace that thing.
>>5032225I haven't kept them before but when I read into them it said they like a reasonably deep sand layer. I would go with sand only or pack some soil at the back only for stems.
>>5032296Different wavelenghts. The lights used to sterilize bacteria are in the 220-260nm range. For reptiles, it's around 300. For plants, they will only use light closer to 400nm. Below 200nm it becomes chernobyl-tier levels of dangerous radiation.>>5032240Also, get a quality aquasoil. Don't cheapen out on the substrate. Product recommendations are going to depend on your region, but ADA Amazonia is relatively affordable (for ADA products, lmao) and a very good aquasoil. It is the easiest recommendation that I can give you, but do be aware that it is a bit aggressive with it's buffering early on. It's not unheard for it to drive the ph into the low 5s. So, make sure to raise your kh while using it. >>5032298Ehh, layering like that can be an issue. The finer substrate tends to slowly dig below the thicker one over time. My current aquarium is like that and, while you can still see the white from the sand, it's full of little black rocks sprinkled in from the basalt below. Sand does make it easier to fix plants in place, though. It can be hard to figure out the right proportion of sand, it depends on shit like granularity and the flow of your tank. Just dont make the sand too deep or plants (especially new plants, when they are most fragile) will have trouble reaching the nutrients below.
>>5032358Put it in bags then dumbass
>>5032366What makes you think I didnt? It's a 2-layer substrate but even in the regions where it's just sand, the bag pokes through as the sand digs into it.
Is the light being all multi color and fancy really important?
>>5032375Yes. But nicer full spectrum lights are also acceptable.See those dips around 480 and 580? Plants don't use those wavelenghts for photosynthesis at all. So any light emitted in those ranges are wasted AND make algae problems more likely, because, unlike the plants, they can grow just fine in them. Full spectrum (white leds) lights have a wide parabola in one specific point of the wavelenght chart and, hopefully, it will cover all the necessary wavelengths at a decent intensity. This is why full spectrum lights will always have a higher lumen value than their RGB price equivalent, they simply have to brute force the spectrum or they end being really bad.For example, look at this graph of the fluval plant 3.0. It technically has rgb but those are pretty much cosmetical. The majority its leds are white (and they are more intense), so it behaves more like a full spectrum light rather than a true wrgb light. It's not very good.
>>5032378>Plants don't use those wavelenghts for photosynthesis at all. So any light emitted in those ranges are wasted AND make algae problems more likely, because, unlike the plants, they can grow just fine in them.completely incorrect boomer parroting, the effect of spectrum differences between lights at aquarium tank depths is neglible. The only value that matters is par.
>>5032400>The only value that matters is par.Tell me, what do you think PAR means?
>>5032410I know what you're thinking and I know what he's thinking:You're thinking of PAR lights from your backstage buggery days at Ricky Martin concerts:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parabolic_aluminized_reflectorHe's thinking of the 400-700nm wavelength plants absorb:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photosynthetically_active_radiation
>>5032378>But nicer full spectrum lights are also acceptable.Do you think that LCD backlights fall into this category? Algae is not really a issue and i actually want a little. I just don't have a way to measure the backlight but it being made to show pretty pictures surly means something right?
>>5032455So, you're saying that PAR is... a rather outdated way of measuring light from a specific section of the light wavelenght I was discussing? Whoah!>>5032465Chances are the backlight is not very powerful compared to the light, so it shouldnt be too much of an issue. And it's not like it's something that you program into your photoperiod.
>>5032470>backlight is not very powerful compared to the lightwhatcha mean?A backlight is just a light used behind an LCD panel. It works just like any other LED strip but i think that the LEDs might be a little fancier than just normal white ones. After all it is responsible in making the picture colorful. I dunno for sure however hence im asking.
>>5032474>whatcha mean? It's not as bright as your main light nor does it illuminate the tank at a wider angle so you shouldnt worry about it.
>>5032477uh it an LCD backlight would be the main one in my case. I want to use one as a regular aquarium light if there is some confusion. And these things are indeed very bright and shine at a very wide angle.
>>5032470>So, you're saying that PAR is...You're not very good at comprehending what you're reading.
>>5032478>an LCD backlight would be the main one in my case. I want to use one as a regular aquarium light if there is some confusion. Yeah... That would not be the best idea unless they are closer to the usual floodlights people tend to use. And a proper light that has been tested under a spectrophotometer will always be better. I thought you were talking about using a backlight behind the tank, not the actual backlight ot a TV. I have no idea how well they will perform. But I imagine it's a pretty cold light.>>5032483I think you should read the link you posted before talking shit, because most of what I referenced previously to your spergout is mentioned in the article.
>>5032485>I have no idea how well they will perform.I just have a couple lying around and i think it would be an interesting project to convert them for this.>But I imagine it's a pretty cold light.I can just supplement it with some colored LEDs. Green and red are the ones plants like right? I'll add some.
>>5032486>Green and red are the ones plants like right? I'll add someEhh, kinda. This is a very complex topic because each individual led emits a wide band of the spectrum at different intensities depending on the chosen color, so adding random LEDs might end up with an unbalanced spectrum that ends up being worse than a white light. Finetuning this is equally a pain in the ass, not worth it imo. If you want to take this up as a project, you would need to do a whole lot of study on the topic and finding some pretty specialized equipment to test your results.
>>5032491yeah i'll think about it. Some aspects of this do seem like pain.
>>5032485>I think you should read the link you posted before talking shit, because most of what I referenced previously to your spergout is mentioned in the article. You really need to work on that reading comprehension, go back and read what's been posted and look at your responses. If you still can't understand what's happening let me know and I'll be happy to explain, but I think you would benefit more if you manage to figure it out yourself.
Ok so I made some tannin water to add to my shrimp tank. However I’ve done research and people say that tannins can reduce the KH of my water. Currently, the hardness of my water sits at KH: 2 and GH: 6. Should I elevate my KH before adding tannin water? To clarify, I have Neocaridina and my tank is 5.5 gallons (let’s say 4 gallons to account for decor). Can I use Arm and Hammer baking soda?
>>5032689Add your water first, let it settle a few days and take a reading. It's unlikely to affect your hardness at all. It will eventually if you go for the whole blackwater biotope process of adding botanicals but that's not what you're describing here with your brown water.
>fish website I wanted to use only ships shrimp>local online shops all want ridiculous prices (50 delivery and 8bucks per shrimp/mini fish)>local stores don't keep a list of fish they sell and are even more expensive>online ships from surrounding countries don't wanna ship to switzerlandGimme you fav online sites to buy from that u know ship internationally. I really want a couple otos or similar mini fish.
>>5032799buy from other hobbyists if possible. Prices are a trillion times lower but you got to collect your animals yourself, i know you want them shipped but there is no other way besides what you already mentioned to get your critters.
>>5032804How would I find those? They don't exactly have websites.
>>5032486>Green and red are the ones plants like right? I'll add some.No. Red and Blue are the main. Green and yellow have very low absorption. The reason you want full spectrum though is that green and yellow punch deeper through the water. Floaters could thrive with straight blurple, but red in particular doesn't penetrate well so you need to the rest of the spectrum.Honestly, the thing you least want to cheap out on is the light. Good lighting makes the tank look so much better. And the price difference from a trash light to a hyggar is $50 and from a hyggar to a fluval is like another $50.
>>5032805drop your pass and stop being stupid.Where do people personally sell stuff online?Sites like kleinanzeigen, fb marketplace, craigslist, or whatever else is most dominant in your country.Don't forget to bring your own container however.
>>5032808Well I never bought anyone ever from private people. I sadly don't know of a single place where people would be allowed to sell living things. Facebook doesn't show any listings.
>>5032808I also recommend doing this because these are not factory farmed animals but ones that most times have good lives. Very often you get other stuff than originally planned too. You come for guppies and leave with some cool snails and plants too.>>5032811i am 100% sure you have something like kleinanzeigen in switzerland too. Look around or just ask some chatbot.Maybe kleinanzeigen is popular where you're living too. I mean the site is german and we share lot of stuff in general.
>>5032812I know Ricardo exists but I checked that, it doesn't allow selling of living things. Kleinanzeigen is germany only. Actually asked gemini a long time ago and it doesn't know of a single site either. It only showed me a few sites that sell aquarium equipment.
>>5032813That can't be. Ask the AI again. Those can search the internet now too. Do you have some weird laws or something?Again this such a basic thing to do nowadays im confused why you even have to ask. Switzerland can't be an exception to this.
>>5032816Hm.. well I found a mega dead forum where people trade fish and this site https://www.anibis.ch/de/q/fische/Ak6R3ZWxzpGZpc2iUwMDAwA?sorting=newest&page=1&query=welsBut sadly no otos.. I've got a feeling I have to call the local store and ask them. Just looking at other random fisch on that marketplace, even the closest dude who's selling his is so far away it would cost me 27bucks to get those things. Might as well pay for overpriced fish from the big chain store..
>>5032799>local stores don't keep a list of fish they sell Phone them and speak to them, a lot of lfs will also have knowledge of other lfs so they can make a recommendation.
>>5032822i found tutti.ch Looks like the same site but i think the results are a little different. I dunno.Looks really sad over there desu.At least you now a motivation to responsibly sell fish if you can actually get your hands on some.
>>5032838Google.. apparently both sites were bought by another company and made the same.. but yeah, yours shows more results.. what a bunch of nonsense.I doubt I'll ever be able to sell my stuff. I only have a small 30L cube. I can't exactly grow stuff in there. I have a shitload of snails, about 100 bladder snails.. and just ordered 3 different species of snails and shrimp. My fist batch of shrimp I got nearly a year ago sadly didn't make it. I'm trying again now with yellows and a better understanding of how to keep aqua pets.I just wanted a couple otos cause they are cute af.
My local store has a couple of these going cheap, apparently nobody likes white in my neighborhood, is it a good tank for what I'm doing >>5032080https://www.amazon.com/Fluval-Flex-Freshwater-White-Gallon/dp/B073WYH4H5/

What style of glass cleaning tool do you guys prefer? I have a magnetic one but it's pretty slow and takes several passes to clear off routine film/algae. I looked at scrapers but they all seem to have terrible reviews. What's the GOOD kind of scraper?
>>5033003There is no perfect scraper. I've bought expensive ones and cheap ones. There has yet to be one I'm fully satisfied with.Like vacuuming or any kind of cleaning really, it's best when done often and regularly. All scrapers lose effectiveness over time so either buy cheap ones and be prepared to replace the entire thing regularly or buy expensive ones with replaceable blades.Magnetic ones are never going to be as effective as getting your hand wet with a short manual scraper, but it allows you to do quick passes easily, which incentivizes you to do maintenance more often.I personally use a Tunze for quick passes and an old credit card for deep cleaning/precise cleaning every once in a while. I've also used various flippers, and while they tend to be weaker than Tunze, they have the advantage of being the thinnest scraper I've ever found, which is great for some parts of my rock work.
>>5033003>>5033006The scraping thing mystifies me. I've always used aquarium scrub sponges and I've never had any problem whatsoever cleaning my entire glass in minutes. Aside from not getting your hands wet, are there any benefits to scrapers like the magnet one?
>>5033014Mostly convenience. Like I said, most people will do maintenance more often if it is more convenient. I certainly don't want to take my lid off and get a step stool just to scrape my glass every time (my reef tank is not small), and with a magnetic one, I don't have to.Aside from convenience though, like I typed previously, certain parts of my rockwork (more specifically the coral growing out of it) makes certain sections of the glass hard to get to and having a thinner magnetic scraper makes it way easier.Even in my planted tank, there are certain sections in the back that are a pain in the ass to get to without a magnetic scraper.
>>5032918fat fuckin otto
>>5029209As far I know, triops need dessication. You can't have them in the aquarium like any other short lived fish.
>>5033080I know. It was only triops in there and some snails. Anyways it will be a shrimp tank now instead. Not triops but i will keep clam shrimp (not actual shrimp) in a big jar which they should like a lot too.
You'd think that shrimp would have some natural inclination to hide even when there are no immediately obvious predators but they're happy to just swim through the middle of the water column without a care in the world.
The filter wasn't running for a bit and now the corydoras are lethargic and one is maybe. But the water values are all within range and there are other fish that would die before the corydoras if anything went wrong. I ran multiple tests which don't give the same results, i don't know if the Ph is too high or too low but even the extremes that the tests show are still fine for them. Naturally nitrates were a little high than usual due to the filter but still within range. Gave a small dose of toxivec and after some time dropped a little catfish food to see if they are actually dead and it got them moving so am i just misreading their behavior or are they actually in danger? Does anyone have had something similar happen? Do they just fall asleep when there is no water current?Filter is running now btw.
>>5033172If your filter was the only thing doing surface agitation then you may have had an issue with dissolved oxygen, especially in a planted tank and the filter was off overnight. In a canister filter apparently you can run into issues with your nitrifiers dying off as the effectively suffocate in the media which can cause knock on problems, but I don't think this is well measured and would need the filter to be off for probably quite a while. Dissolved oxygen is more important than the parameters we're able to test for unfortunately.
>>5033178coincidentally around the same time the filter choked somebody also added an airpump for some reason despite everyone being healthy without one. Could that have somehow influenced them too? Its off now. I also have some power that gives off oxygen but dunno if its needed and i don't want to over medicate.I mean the plants covered like 90% of their oxygen needs so i don't understand how the filter not circulating for a bit could cause these issues. Also another issue. Two of my fish really like to hide under the old aquarium filter which is glued in. Its just a little above sediment so there is some space there. But its not enough to comfortably enter and exit the hiding place. I saw one rotating around to get in because there is little space. How do i make their place just a little bigger without removing this old filter? They don't leave it when they see you and i don't want to squish them. But it being the way it is would for sure hurt them in the long run also.
>>5033182>I mean the plants covered like 90% of their oxygenthe filter ran for much longer not sucking in air into the water so its actually closer to the plants covering 100%.
>>5033182>>5033183Plants are massive oxygen contributors generally, but oxygen levels drop in planted tanks overnight as plants respire without photosynthesising which releases oxygen back into the water. It's not generally a problem but if your oxygen levels were lower than normal because of a lack of surface agitation then I was just guessing it was a potential cause. If you had an airstone running at the same time then I'm not sure. Elevated nitrates means that you had higher than normal ammonia and denitrification is an oxygen consuming process so maybe. It's hard to say, but if you have people adding random bits of kit into your tank who knows what the cause was.>Also another issueI prefer to close up spaces like this, fish love to get themselves trapped and killed. Would just cut to size some filter foam and wedge it in.
>>5033185>It's hard to say, but if you have people adding random bits of kit into your tank who knows what the cause was.It really sucks having to care for an aquarium you do not own. I wouldn't even need to ask here what it going on if somebody just listened.>Would just cut to size some filter foam and wedge it in.they don't leave that place. They are nocturnal are in the always when the light is on. There are other actually safe places but they only want to be under there for some reason. I have the light currently turned off in hopes that they will leave it and allow me to do something about it but then when they just feel something weird in their tank they cross the entire thing in two seconds and hide again. Thought about getting a second person to help coordinate and very slowly suck the sediment out of there with a tube but even with somebody controlling the flow at all times this still sounds very risky. Any advice? Maybe shine a spotlight at them in their place while the normal light is off? Would that scare them off?
I’ve just learned that Heiko Bleher died in the 15th of august. RIP.
>>5033039She realy is huge, not sure if preggers or just fat af
>>5032918The amandas catching crumbs from the shrimp's work.
>>5033346Do your shrimps actually tear old leaves apart? Mine have never touched em, not even the snails have.
>>5033349They don't realy touch leaves, but they ate all the duckweed!
>>5033357Fascinating. I have never witnessed my shrimp eat anything besides snail poo. The bladder snails love tree seeds tho. They devour that shit..
this was the first time I saw him in like 3 days after introducing him to the tank I hope he comes out to eat tomorrow since I haven't seen him eat at all and he was brave enough to get out of his burrow.
>>5031894Looking forward to never seeing them again in 15 minutes
>>5034140>>5031894hehe goodbye crabs
Anyone know whats up with this guy's tail? I don't know if it's ich since the white part doesn't look spotty and he's the only one with a tail like this. I've noticed the other fish chase him sometimes, could they be biting his tail?
>>5034195little fella looks skinny too
>>5034195It could be ich. If you don't have inverts then I would say dose the tank, better safe than sorry. Especially with neon tetras which are a bit on the fragile side.If you do have inverts, heating the tank into the 80s F and going heavy on salt (like t tbsp/gallon) for two weeks does work as well. Basically>do a big water change and HEAVILLY vacuum the gravel>tbsp salt/per gallon mix with water (based on full tank)>big water change like 25% every day or two. Vacuum gravel hard to get cysts and eggs>Don't forget 1 tbsp/gallon on replacement>after two weeks just up water changes for a few
>>5026890I ended up pulling the trigger on a dozen rainbow shiners from imperial tropical. No issues with the fish. They look great, very much like Danios. They even school together. >>5030174That's wild. I take for granted how good the water is in Northeast America. Virtually any treated or reservoir water is unchlorinated, no fluoride, low mineral 6.9ph. And that's anywhere between Boston and Philly.
>>5034205Yeah they share a tank with some greedy Guppies and miss out on some food so I've been trying to focus feed them recently.>>5034206Okay thanks, I'll dose the ich medicine just in case. No inverts yet but I was planning to add them down the line so this is good to know.
>>5034140yup they're fucking gone lmao, one was clinging on for dear life on a vallis strand in front of the filter outflow but then disappeared under the hardscape like the rest of them
My ghetto drip acclimator for 5bucks works quite well. Sucking on the tube to get it going is kinda gross tho. I think I drank some snail poo..

>>5034237They actually do wander around at night.
>>5035627do these guys breed and form colonies like neocaridina shrimps or do they need brackish water to reproduce?
>>5036245Early advice was for brackish water but I think it's been deboonked. People have bred them in home aquariums but there's a major issue with larvae die off a few days after release so either theyre susceptibile to something in common tap water or they have an unusual feeding requirement. Probably related to why they're only found in that one Thai river in the first place. Where people have bred them at home they've managed to do so consistently so it might be something basic like nitrate sensitivity (most people keeping them will be planted tank owners dosing N) or they require greenwater which they wouldn't get in a maintained tank.
>>5036354only things I've learned so far is they enjoy monte carlo and being upside down
>>5036360they're really cool lookingshame they gotta be wild caught
What are some fishes you can keep with shrimps beside ottos?would plecos not eat the shrimp fry?I read even tiny tetras eat the fry so I really don't know if I'll keep any fishes at all with my cherry shrimps
>>5036416If you are running breeder tank that's one thing, but for a regular tank, as long as you have enough hiding places, the shrimp will reproduce. They get eaten in the wild too. I have a self sustaining colony with a couple goldfish and danios. They hang out underneath driftwood and in the floaters at the top of the tank.
>>5036416You can't avoid fry losses with fish, you need heavy planting to ensure enough survive a few moults and fish that won't bother the larger ones to have a sustaining colony. Problem is that even small fish can get a taste for the juvenile shrimp eventually and then they'll proceed to massacre all of them and you'll have a population crash once your adults die off. CPDs are a common example of this, being a recommendation for shrimp that can occasionally go bad it's just a matter of luck. But generally any <2in fish won't actively harass them and you'll be fine. People like neons/cardinal tetras, the microrasboras, corys (pygmy and normal) and the dwarf rainbows.
>bad light>shit substrate, possibly with limestone>no or bad co2The trifecta of shitter planted aquariums.
>>5036440>Problem is that even small fish can get a taste for the juvenile shrimp eventually and then they'll proceed to massacre all of themThis, I had Shrimp in a tank with a half-dozen female betta. Everything was fine for the first few years then I noticed the shrimp population rapidly dwindling, finally spotted her going murder hobo, within a week the shrimp were gone and she had doubled in size. Poor girl ate herself to death.
>>5036615Well I mean bettas, even female ones, aren't a great example they're fairly notorious for killing shrimp.>>5036560Take it easy, take the lowtech anubias and buce pill.
>>5036416>even tiny tetras eat the fryCan confirm
Thoughts on adding a school of micro fish to a 5.5 gallon heavily planted shrimp tank? The current stock is 9 Neos, 2 Amanos, and a bunch of Ramshorn Snails. Maybe I can add a school of White Cloud Mountain Minnows or Chili Rasboras?
How would you go about getting the background to seal if I can’t get behind the cabinet? I don’t know if I can even move it if I drained it 80%.
>>5036776Take out the wall and rebuild it
>>5036755Would go for the chilis, they're significantly smaller and WCMM can kill shrimp.
How fragile are panda corydoras really? My tank had pic related (caribsea planted tank gravel) which is basic pet store stuff. The grains are several mm and aren't smooth, but not jagged, just rough. I want to add the cories but I'm not going to change the substrate.
Started from 10 shrimp 4 months ago. Compression really fucked the quality sadly.
Cute cherry shrimp
>>5036893I remember after my first berried shrimp I only saw one fry for weeks and was worried that's all I'd get maybe due to a feeding or water quality issue. Now I've got probably over 100 and will have to just give them away to my store.
>>5036932What do these crabs eat? I thought they are supposed to be filtrators but I see claws.
>>5036440sadI guess my shrimp heaven tank will only have invertebrates thenmaybe some otto catfishes but I'm worried adding some amano shrimps would starve them algaes
>>5036935I don't think I've seen them referred to as filter feeders, the hairs are apparently able to catch detritus but they're probably just simple scavengers.
Anyone here has experience with glass catfish?
>>5037043i have experience seeing them in stores and going "huh, neat."
>>5037043I had them for a while. They are cool and fairly hardy. They swim laser straight and only flutter the end of their tail. I gave them up because they can be a bitch to find. They are actually one of the more ecologically irresponsible fish to keep. I don't really care, but since it was such a pain in the ass to find replacement fish, I stopped. The last one lived for almost a year by himself and swam around with the other fishes.
Kind of a dumb question: I have shrimp and fish that co-exist. I'm sure they fish pick off shrimplets but not too bad. If I throw a bunch of shrimp in the tank, is it going to make the fish predate the shrimp extra hard after?
I wish these guys could breed in captivity feels bad buying wild caught animals
>>5036946pretty sure amanos eat baby shrimp. They even kill and eat bladder snails.
>>5037142This general is the only place I've ever heard this said. Even if they do it's not in any major quantities.
>>5037148I've heard about it quite often in random places and a quick google seems to support it. Some don't have issues, others had their amanos eat fry.And I saw videos of amanos absolutely murdering small snails like bladders and eating them. So like.. u know.
>10 gallons of 1.5 years>dragonscale betta jumped out through a small opening and find his dried corpsei want to get another better but i kind of want to try shrimp, but they're so expensive per shrimp what the fuck
>>5037142I heard that too but there's no way they'd be as destructive as fishes would>>5037256get your shrimps from a local hobbyist on craigslist or whatever your country usesgot 20 blue velvets for 10€ that way
>>5037222>AI garble>11 years ago asking about eating fish not shrimp fry>fish not shrimp fry againI'm not saying it doesn't happen, it's just that it's clearly not going to happen enough to have a noticable impact on your population. Lots of people do it, myself included I started with four amanos and 10 rcs and now have 100+. Ultimately they're just not predatory, they'll probably scoop up really young ones if they happen to grab them while grazing but that's it.
>>5037313cute mfers. if get a bigger tank some day i will stock some pygmy corys for sure.
>>5037222I hate that people use the gemini briefs to prove their point unironically. If you are going to screencap, why don’t you go through the trouble of at least clicking the source for the information in question?
>>5037090Filter feeders are also kinda hard to keep. These guys do pick food off the ground but getting it to them can still be hard. They also uproot plants and mess with your scape as they get quite big. I kept one for about a year before it died. They do seem to have a stable population all the way from Florida to Central Africa, so that shouldn’t really be a cause for concern. People eat them more than they are collected for aquariums.
Any thoughts on an 180(L)x35(W)x50(H) tank?I got the idea to segment like 25-30cm of one side into a bog-style filter with a bunch of plants n shit, like I did my duck pond. That should give a pretty good amount of bio-filter.Also considering just Tannin it up and making it black-water style cuz those look cool (and the area it's in is very sunny by nature)
