>>5034181First time having a polyphemus fail to spin a cocoon. Poor guy was making all the motions, trying to sew silk around him but he clearly had a defective gland because nothing came out. They’re so sad looking as prepupas
>>5034432And of course I made him a paper towel cocoon. I cut a little bit of excess silk off another cocoon and tucked it in for him, hoping maybe he’d think he had some success after all. He pupated just fine
Dropped pic
>>5034439interesting, you're helping a retard moth, does that actually work?
>>5034454I did this same thing with 5 prometheas this year too (most just fell out of their cocoons and couldn’t climb back up in time) and only one out of the five pupated correctly. I experimented with different types of paper towel and the cheap brown stuff seems to be the only type that they pupate in correctly for some reason. Once they’ve pupated I cut the fake cocoon open and they’re able to make it out just fine. Only done this twice before, picrel was a columbia-gloverii that couldn’t spin silk but came out beautifully. I’d love to know if the issue is caused by external damage to the gland or something else, I don’t have the heart to hold them under a microscope to examine it when they’re already stressed and so pathetic looking
>>5034463pretty
>>5034463It might just be that im drunk but this actually made me cry. Youre so kind, helping this poor little critter live to fly even when nature would just let them perish without knowing what its like. And look at it, its so beautiful ;-;
>>5034467Anon you just made my day!! Thank you that means a lot. My caterpillars are cheering you on
>>5034473and thank you for doing this... youre a true steward for these small guys. Even jut successfully helping one seems like a little miracle
Saw two scorpion flies this week in my garden. No males unfortunately.
>kill spider in my room>fruit flies everywherei've learned my lesson
>>5034664Watch out doggo, you're heading right for the web!
>>5034689she sniffed it, the spider was like wtf
just call it arthropod general, you redditors don't ever discuss anything else anyways
>>5034753
spidussy
>>5034463Holy based. What if you used a little syrup to stick the cocoon shut. Then it let's them press their way out. Just the smallest amount in the edge. How do you know when they are ready? They wiggle around?
>>5034785fuck this bullshit
>>5034902*sprinkles salt on you*
Got my cribs in. What do you guys think is worth putting in here for the black widows? I have some spare dirt and pebbles from a recent terrarium project, could probably make these tiny little bioactive spider houses but could maybe also just go with some sticks to keep it simple and clean.
Found these brown and mottled colored rolypoly type invertebrates in my Mom's hair, all dead. We're in the American southeast, what are they? They're so tiny it's hard to get a clear picture of them without a proper small scale camera.
>>5034809Ooo I like this idea. They pupate 7-10 days after cocooning so I wait until then, right now I have a cecropia who also had a defective silk gland and he’s making all kinds of noise wiggling around right now so I assume he’s pupating today. I’d love to watch the process but I won’t risk disturbing him. Watching this video will have to do https://youtu.be/mn6tieGIhYA
>>5035540go simple and clean. better visibility
>>5036347Yeah. I got some cork bark that I'm gonna break into chunks so they have more places to anchor their webs. Probably will just do that, some sticks, and a very thin layer of pebbles on the bottom.
Got them moved in. They're staying still hoping I don't see them, but hopefully they will start making new webs soon.
>>5036622And here they both are from the front. Lefty decided to hide so I spun her enclosure around for the first pic.
Good start to the webs already.
Big meal to start the week
>>5037196They're really fun to watch when they're wrapping/feeding
SPEED spider from the desert>>5037203TY for the update pics. These are very well made enclosures. I feel like they are still too small, and the spiders could make some very large webs in a larger plastic tub.
Oh well either way no point in moving them now. I've heard making webs takes a lot of energy so moving them now will probably do more harm than good.
>>5034432>>5034439>>5034463I love these special needs moths
>>5036622Very nice>>5037741They can make bigger webs but often times don’t. Usually when I find wild Latrodectus they’re in really tight spaces with small webs
>>5037741I found them in holes in cinder blocks. The enclosures are larger than where they were living in the wild.
>>5037196i like it
>>5034264Fuck you fuck you
They're cleaner than I thought. They each trapped the crickets in like the corners/against the walls of their enclosure, but then dragged them up and displayed the bodies right in the dead center of their webs while they fed. And now that they're done they've kicked the husks down into the substrate below. Pretty neat.
When they’re well behaved they can have a treat. Fortunately for us both they’re always well behaved
What's this fellow I slapped off my shoulder? Was I in danger? I'm in California
>>5039688Orb weaver. Harmless
Got a pic of a moth feeding. They feed fast >>5037797>>5037841Cool ty for the info>>5039688You are already infected by the spores
Found a stowaway loxosceles in some produce, poor thing looks hungry.
