how smart are they?

I don’t think there is a single animal as misunderstood as these. Sure they’re gory predators, but that doesn’t make them any worse than traditionally cute things like bears and wild dogs. They’re pretty docile and there’s a lot of myths about the toxicity of their bite and how they hunt

> SAMUEL S. SWEET AND ERIC R. PIANKA REPLY: We based our statement about monitor counting on recent experiments on captive white-throated monitors (Varanus albigularis) by John Phillips, an investigator at the San Diego Zoo. A lizard was fed snails in groups of four. Each snail was placed in a separate compartment connected to three others within a chamber, and the compartments were opened one at a time to allow the monitor to eat the four snails. On finishing the fourth snail, the lizard was allowed into another chamber containing four more snails.
>After such conditioning, one snail was removed from some snail quartets. The lizard reacted by searching extensively tier the missing fourth snail, even when it was free to move on to the next group. Similar experiments with yawing numbers of snails in the groups showed that the monitors can count up to six. With groups larger than six, however, the monitors seemed to stop counting: they merely classified them as "lots," eating them all before moving on to the next chamber. Such an ability to count probably evolved as a consequence of raiding nests of reptiles, birds, and mammals, because the average clutch or litter size is about six.
It was a white throat and not a savannah but the same still applies
>>
>>5035444
Fun fact: Most humans can only "instinctively count" to 4 or so. Higher numbers require the mind to make conscious intervention in its own processes. Innate counting ability isn't actually general intelligence, consciousness, etc, it's a hardware skill like extra short term memory or faster visual processing that can enhance consciousness but doesn't imply it.

Particularly lucky humans have an innate comprehension of the number seven. Most people comprehend seven as four and three.

>>
>>5034867
probably pretty fucking stupid
>>
>>5035961
That specific one isn’t. It happened on a mine site. The Komodo dragon videos are frequently staged because they’re easy to do and get views. Komodo dragons are everywhere on the islands so it doesn’t take long to set up and catch a lizard’s attention. Perenties are few and far between so the chances somebody is going to catch a feral cat and hold onto it until they see a perentie are pretty slim
>>
>>5034922
Problem with these is that they aren't retard proof as dogs/cats.
You gotta respect it, and lizard will respect you back.
If you act like a retard around cats nothing really happens(unless we talk big cats like tigers), but if you are asshole to these guys they can kill you.
>>5035689
Does anyone have the video of group of dogs trying to bully a tegu until one of the dogs gets his leg fucked up? It's always satisfying when the good guy wins.
>>
>>5034968
It's because they are common enough.
Every kid has had a hamster, so nobody is afraid of them, but throw a mouse in the room, and everyone loses their shit.
I hope that the new generation that is on the internet 24/7 has seen enough cute reptile videos to change their view, so the "not dog/cat therefore bad" boomer view will finally end.

Dogs and cats were selectively bred to pull at heartstrings that originally evolved for humans. Its why people who eat them tend to be cannibals, back over children twice for the lulz, pisslamic shitholes etc

>>
>>5036317
>Problem with these is that they aren't retard proof as dogs/cats
That’s fine because there are next to no Komodo dragons in private hands and those that are usually die before they grow large. Most people who have one have a smuggled baby dragon so any attack is deserved
>>
>>5036762
Perenties in particular eat a lot of venomous snakes and smaller monitors, their skin is very tough. But even if the cat were to try the monitor will just start thrashing around to prevent injury to itself
>>
>>5036766

I searched a bit about this innate number sense, it's something that I discovered a few years ago while working a handling job where I had to stack and count items all the time, with little time to spare. I noticed that up to five, I didn't have to count at all and the number was just a raw shape of which I immediately knew the value. For example a certain item had to be stacked in lines of 17 and it was 24 columns high, in an instant my eye would go five-five-five-two by five-five-five-five-four and only then process it into 17x24, and then probably something like 17x20 +2x(17x2) = 340+2x34 to count them. Or maybe something like 24x(10+5+2) = 240+120+48. Think of three, never needed to count to three, it's just there, like left and right or up and down, (3) is unmistakable like 1 or 2. Doable up to 5 without a doubt, and then 6-7-8-9 are just groups of 3 and 4, very quickly I was seeing 9 quite clearly, either as dot dot dot, or four-one-four, which was useful to count since 9 is almost as good as 2 or 10 when it comes to multiplication. Anyway, I didn't know it was called the number sense, now I have a word for what I thought of as feeling a number intuitively.
>>
>>5035689
Large monitors are not only smarter than cats but higher predators as well
>>
>>5034872
it's hard to do comparative measurement of animal intelligence but non-avian reptiles in general are severely underrated. I'd say varanids are definitely more intelligent than raptors and crocs are probably close to parrots.

crocodiles imo are mentally more like mammals than they are like most squamate reptiles. Most squamates are retarded but varanids are an exception.

geckos tend to get a pass on the lizard hate because of the kawaii eyes. snakes are way more hated than lizards in general though.

>I'm here to spread the truth.
Then why would you say that goats aren't native to Java when that is a halftruth at best? Goats arrived in the archipelago about 2500 years ago, millennia before Javanese was even a language. Old Javanese is attested from the Medang period. That's the 800s AD. Goats were already well established by the time the concept of Java existed. There has never been a Java without goats, you silly, misinformed goose.
As penance, you should feed your arm to a komodo. And record it as it happens.
