>>5040489There used to be brown bears in North Africa, they went extinct, but it's still a proven good habitat. In the mountains in east Africa it could survive pretty well, plenty of fruit and edible roots, perfect temperature year-round, predators to steal carrion from... It could also share a niche with mountain gorillas in central Africa, their diets aren't too different. Anywhere else would be too hot and/or couldn't provide enough food. I suppose there's a reason why bears that live in tropical areas are so small.

They can run at a decent clip for short distances, but they need forests and mountains to stalk and drive pray into/out of, but in terms of fighting, it could easily kill anything but a large water buffalo, rhino and elephant. A lion would be a piece of cake.
