I just learnt that the Dachshunds where bred as pest control, specifically to get rid of Badgers. Dachs is German for Badger and Hund is German for Dog which also sounds similar to the word Hound.

Badgers burrow underground so the perfect dog to deal with a burrower would have to have a body similar to a Stoat since Stoats are also good at burrowing to get Rabbits. A Stoat has a long flexible body and short legs, just like the Dachshund and that's why the Dachshunds body is so long while it's legs are so short.

It's the ultimate burrowing dog.

as someone who knows only a small amount of german, I always thought it was odd that they were called roof dogs. Today I have discovered that they are in fact not

Malamutes almost went extinct in ww2, and most of the malamutes that exist today are actually some kind of designer husky
