How to obtain an owl pet?
>>
Pretty easy in the UK. They are sold illegally a good amount along with ravens or crows in the country side. My grandfather decades ago bought two tawnys from a guy just going door to door asking if someone wanted chicks and he did it. I knew a school friend whose father did the same thing in the suburbs with a barn owl but I think he had a private contact as he already did falconry as a hobby. Beutiful, but fucking terrible pets. My father has an endless supply of horror storys around keeping them. Even crows are a handfull. The irony is your better off with a parrot, more social too.

I remember you! And one of the horror stories!
As a kid, your dad would go into the loo and the female tawny, who decided the area was her domain, would land on his head and tear him to absolute shreds, all while his pants and trousers were round his ankles, yeah?
Horror story indeed.

Don't they have doors in England

In anon's story, the bird decided she owned the bathroom. Idk what you know about tawnies but they're extremely territorial. Probably the most territorial owls of all. Once they pick a spot, it's theirs. Anyway, I think anon's grandfather just had the owls he was raising free fly indoors.
I could also simply just have the details wrong. But I remember reading last year or so some anon's poor dad being destroyed by an owl had he had a poo. That's the sort of thing you remember.

I think in the states, you pretty much need a license to own any significant bird of prey.

Of course, the reason is because caring and private breeding for these birds is professionally done for the sake of falconry, not really 'pet-hobby' material imho. But I don't think owls are even done much for falconry, but I imagine care is similar and is tough as well.
You're probably 1000x better off just trying to make an owl-house somewhere to attract a local owl pair someday.

Recently I heard a barred owl hooting close to me on a walk.

They don't make good pets OP. Just volunteer at a nature center that has ones that can't fly if you want to be around them. I did like the owls more than the other birds, they aren't as messy as the hawks and eagles generally but they do sometimes still leave trails of intestines on the walls that need to be scraped off, or a half-eaten mouse butt lying around.

They are uncommonly used in falconry mostly as a niche challenge by people who are already experts. From what I remember you have to be involved in it for years and years before you can even legally have one.

Did pet owl business gain a huge uptick after Harry Potter became a thing?
