Basically I am thinking of getting a parrot. I am from a family that has always had parrots but for a while now I wanted to get a dog for my new house. Unfortunenately, life's a bitch. Turns out I am allergic to them along with cats.So I am going back to what I know and thinking of getting a parrot, but I want something different from what my family has had and to get a parrot that is, and I know it's really gay to say this but, endgame material for an animal companion. My family has had quakers to congo african grays and amazons but never macaws, so I am considering going with one of them. I could adopt a macaw but I know first hand that adopted parrots can be plagued with behavioral problems so I am considering buying from a breeder instead But, obviously, macaws cost a lot of money. So it got me thinking if I am looking at 1-2k for a macaw, why not just go the extra mile and get a hyacinth? I heard their temperaments seem to be a lot better compared to the standard blues or reds. And just to be clear just in case: this isn't a shitpost. I can save 1.5k a month so I can realistically save for one longterm.
>>5048816>My family has had quakers to congo african grays and amazonsHow many fucking birds do they have at any one time
>>5048816The answer for anyone thinking about owning a large parrot is no, even for someone who has experience with them
>>5048819My parents currently have:>Alexadrine>Congo African Grey>Yellow Fronted Amazon>Quaker>A Fucking BudgieOther family members had macaws before I was born but I have never known them.
>>5048816You would need two. You cannot realistically give it the time that it requires by yourself. It’s also likely to outlive you so better for it to have a long term companion when you’re gone
>>5048824That's a fair point. One of the breeders I know of sells them for around 20k a bird from what I have heard. 20k is within my ability, but potentially 40k for 2 is a different thing entirely. But thats just the one breeder I know of, google says the lowest quote is 10k a bird on the open market so I could potentially get two for 20k - 30k but I don't know of any breeder specifically that do those kinda rates.

>MOGGED
Be like Tesla and take the dove pill.
>>5048948I did consider doves funnily enough, especially Giant Runts. But dove lifespans seem to be all over the place and, to be blunt, they arn't the smartest wings in the air.
>>5048816Don't. Unless you're going to spend all your time with it. The parrot will start self mutilating and pluck it's feathers. Also, it'll probably outlive you
Cockatoo
>>5048958It's funny, a guy that I work with has a white one and rates them highly over macaws in terms of how affectionate they are......only catch is he uses hearing aids and his wife is legally deaf. Very noisey. But pic rel always seemed very interesting to me, but apparently palms are tricky temperment wise so they are probably a no go.
Big blue niggaA bligger, if you will
>>5048973You should see if red or yellow tails are available where you are
>>5048816>I heard their temperaments seem to be a lot better compared to the standard blues or redsThey are but they like to play rough and can very easily hurt you by accident since their bite is like twice as strong as a blue and gold. They’re also really needy and need constant company and have very specific diets. You should only get one if you know exactly what you’re doing and have experience with macaws specifically, not just medium sized parrots
>>5049283Damn, that's actually an incredibly beutifull bird. I don't know of any breeders where I am based but I have seen a rehome ad for one at 10k, so they are in the market. I will have to keep an eye on them, how do they compare to other cockatoos?>>5049286Yeah to be fair I have heard mouthing is a problem you need to sort out with them if you get them young and not fully hand reared. Diets shouldn't be too much of an issue as I think I can afford to get the fruit and nuts nessasary for them, there are ton of pet supply stores around here as well as online suppliers as well.>You should only get one if you know exactly what you’re doing and have experience with macaws specifically, not just medium sized parrotsSo would you say Congo Greys and Amazons won't be enough in terms of care experience to prepare for a Hyacinth?
>>5049289>how do they compare to other cockatoos? They are also noisy, but the sounds they make are much less harsh and not as loud compared to the sulphur or umbrella crested cockatoos. They’re supposed to be pretty friendly too but they like to fly and need a lot of room. Also they’re exceptionally destructive even for parrots
>>5049296They remind me a little bit of Alexandrines in that case lolMy family has to cycle out chew toys every week for pic rel if he is not swooping from room to room, picking at leather furniture or just barking because people have gone into the kitchen for food. Lovely bird though
>>5048816Might sever your finger...or your dick.
>>5049314>or your dick.
This thread has made me realize we don't actually have things like parrot gens
>>5049384Yeah it seems like we have all the other bases covered.I think bird people here are just more into the wildlife and outdoor birds than pet ownership
Update:As much as I like the Hyacinth, I think I am sold on a Red or Yellow Tailed Cockatoo. However it does not look like they are readily available where I an based when compared to the Hyacinth. I am probably going to start saving and then ask some bird shops that deal with parrots if they know any breeder contacts that can supply a Red or Yellow, but if there isn't, I am going to size up whether I have space for Hyacinth. And if all else fails I will just go the complete opposite route and get the smallest Macaw I can with pic rel (Hahn's Macaw).
