it really is wild. i don't fully know how to express it, but the past ~80 years of civilization, there's been so much that's been opened up. everything from new music genres to movies to animal conservation to exploring the cosmos to fucking christ so much...
but boomers are also to blame for much of the malaise in current year, but at the same time they're also the reason we have so much else. it must be weird for people like goodall who started something positive and then see support for it slowly wither away. again, i don't know how to quantify it. the past ~80 years have been such an insane part of human civilization

>One of Gary Larson's Far Side cartoons shows two chimpanzees grooming. One finds a blonde human hair on the other and inquires, "Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?" Goodall herself was in Africa at the time. The Jane Goodall Institute thought the cartoon was in bad taste and had its lawyers draft a letter to Larson and his distribution syndicate in which they described the cartoon as an "atrocity". They were stymied by Goodall herself: when she returned and saw the cartoon, she stated that she found the cartoon amusing.
>Since then, all profits from sales of a shirt featuring this cartoon have gone to the Jane Goodall Institute. Goodall wrote a preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy, and the institute's letter was included next to the cartoon in the complete Far Side collection. She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behaviour of humans and animals. In 1988, when Larson visited Goodall's research facility in Tanzania, he was attacked by a chimpanzee named Frodo.

Absolutely based woman, the world would be a better place if more people were like her. RIP.

So ultimately, were her observations legitimate or was she anthropomorphizing the chimps?
>>
>>5053838
Very legitimate. She was the first to describe tool use in animals when that was supposedly what defined humans as different from other animals. Pretty sure she was also the first to see them hunting monkeys and waging war on other troops

It speaks for her integrity as a scientist that she first documented chimpanzees being peaceful and friendly, then observed them suddenly starting wars, and documenting/publishing this, too.
Plenty of scientists would've quietly brushed it under the table (e.g. J. Eric S. Thompson, although he's not /an/), trying to make their ideal the only published reality. She didn't.
She's arguably underrated as a scientist, being better known as an activist. But her research and papers are as legit as it gets.
>>
When was the last time this board had a sticky? When lassie died?
>>

>suddenly starting wars
so they only started waging war after her involvement? Hmm I wonder if her methods of engagement with the chimps created some kind of observer effect hmm?

How active was she in the past few decades? Did she make many tv specials or documentaries? I know I have seen her countless times but can't recall if I ever seen anything in particular on tv. chimps have always been violent animals and have always been inaccurately stereotyped as nice. many people still believe bonobos are hippy apes that solve disputes with sex, but the males actually fight each other more than chimps and it's common for wild ones to be missing fingers, toes, and parts of their face.

Didn't her crew give food handouts to the chimp colony starting resource wars and changing the family dynamics of chimps. I can't remember the name but there was a male chimp that killed its sister out of jealousy, he died NEETing it up in his tree after his mother died or something. I thought it was a great allegory for humans.

>"We stripped him and spread eagled him and lashed the holy blue sweat out of him with nettle stalks and leaves..."[31] She even reportedly kidnapped and held for ransom the child of a suspected poacher.[31][44] After her murder, Fossey's National Geographic editor, Mary Smith, told Shlachter that on visits to the United States, Fossey would "load up on firecrackers, cheap toys and magic tricks as part of her method to mystify the (Africans) in order to hold them at bay."[45] She wore face-masks and pretended to practice black magic to scare away poachers.

This.
In a time of unprecedented prosperity, people are eager to find things to do, missions to be a part of, businesses to start, etc. People are looking around for cool investments to make, or simply causes worth patronizing with their new wealth.
But eventually the script is written, and you realize that the consensus is that you're supposed to just obsess about your home equity and the stock market, so boomers just obsess about their home equity, the stock market, and vacations. I think even they'd like to put their money towards stuff that's more helpful and interesting, but home equity/stocks is easy, it makes the most money, and it's the direction or institutions actively funnel people into. You're not "supposed" to do anything else. Everything else is considered a whacky waste of money these days, so they just buy S&P 500, vote against young people trying to get a house, and wait for the reaper.
