Last night I was cycling and I suddenly encountered four adult boars walking in line on the road. The one in front stopped and looked at me and I quickly pedaler as far from them as the road allowed me to.
Being an urbanite, I'm clueless about boars.
1) how dangerous are they? I know the female will fuck you up if she's traveling with her youngs.
2) what's the best course of action if I encounter them again?

I've been thinking about stuffin a couple of raw potatoes in my pockets before heading out. Depending on the situation, I could throw them to divert their attention, make them ease up, or shoot it at their faces if things gets dangerous.

are boars (or other animals i guess) smart enough to know that if a projectile hits them it was thrown by a human or do they blame the projectile itself

Best course of action is to leave them alone. Unless you're a child sized person they won't try to eat you. Just keep your distance they're probably not boars but feral pigs should probably contact game and wildlife to have someone exterminate them.

And yes they're extremely smart.

I assumed as much, but I can't exactly "leave them alone" if they're strolling in the middle of the road.
>they're probably not boars but feral pigs
Perharps, I wouldn't know.
I know they're considered invasive, but I don't want them to be shot.

Then maybe "share the road" you huge pussy.

Be careful. If you piss them off they will kill you. Pigs are basically all muscle and deceptively strong for their size. They have very sharp teeth and stronf jaws as well.

Yeah, they're likely over twice my weight. I don't want them charging my sorry ass.

They will generally ignore you unless you appear threatening.
Sow with young will be triggered easier.

They're mostly harmless, but they do have massive tusks that can slice you like knives, espeicialy on the legs. People have died from having their femoral arteries cut. Boar hunting was a mega-alpha endeavor in the past, especially if you were using a boar spear, with the telltale cross bar to prevent over penetration. Some hunters, at least here in FL, sill still hunt them with spears too. Often from a tree stand. There are even "tactical hunting spears" and shit.

Also, if you have a dog do not let them get anywhere near these pigs, or they will die. Folks use pitbulls with kevlar vests and collars to hunt them down here, but you need a 2 or more dogs to do a good job and even then injuries are very common.
