All life is believed to share a common ancestor. If you take the latest common ancestor for all dinosaurs and all of its descendents, you include birds. Insisting on monophyletic groups of animals in common usage is kinda dumb though, you'd also say all mammals are fish and all trees are algae and all kinds of other weird stuff. Scientific taxonomy though is fully on board with "taxa must be monophyletic" which does make sense, but it kinda bugs me when people then say that that's the only way to talk about animals. Polyphyletic taxa are stupid in common usage but I think paraphyletic taxa are fine to talk about, it's like saying "dinosaurs are all of this branch of life not including the branch that turned into birds."

A very derived dinosaur.
So derived that calling it a dinosaur would be equivalent to calling a rabbit a fish.

If rabbits were the only living descendants of fish, then I think that would be completely valid.
