I'm new to the beetle keeping hobby and want to know if there's any enthusiasts here, beetle forum is pretty inactive
>>5060927never was much for beetles but at one point i did have about 35 Passalidae live specimens (bess beetle)
>>5060928very coolI'm currently raising a prosopocoilus giraffa larva
>>5060931what do they eat ?? I've only ever used beetles as feeders, when I found them. No idea how to raise them. I mean I know some eat wood and some eat nuts and some eat fruit but i dont know the specifics
>>5060927Mf gf is doing a PhD on the burying beetle. They are pretty metal
>>5060947detritus
>>5060927I fucked up and didn’t prepare any substrate for my Lamprima prior to last summer so here’s hoping I get some larvae with the shit I cobbled together
>>5061003so you can just put them in a cup of soil and they'll grow ?? do you have to mix it with rotted wood ?? do you have to cook the substrate to prevent mold ??
>>5060947Life cycle of beetles are: >egg>larva: eats detritus ( decomposing material ) ( usually decomposing wood in logs )>pupa ( cocoon)>adult (there are herbivores and carnivores) (rhino and stag beetles are herbivores that naturally eat tree sap and decomposing fruits)
>>5061003Surely you can buy flake soil online? Or perhaps get in touch with ypur local exotics dealer?
>>5061111thats so cool dude I never knew that. i used to be told that adult beetles didnt even eat anything which i always thought was odd. there are some insects where the adult stage quite literally doesnt have a mouth so im sure theres some beetles that dont eat during their adult stage, but I figured they have mouths for a reason. Although, you could argue those mouths are used for defense . . .
>>5061141Yep thats rightI like rhino beetles for their horns and stag beetles for their pincersThey use those horns/pincers to grapple, fighting for food, mating rights and territoryhttps://youtu.be/EjvLOAIxbNQ?si=Te1bLYUC9qw64p0s

>>5061669got some buddies in asia that make videos like this with Hymenoptera. Usually in captive setups, though. you have probably seen some of their videos, they work with a lot of exotics and they're relatively popularof course, the difference between hymenoptera and beetles is hymenoptera encounters are fatal to other insects.
>>5061674Name the channel, buddy
>>5061112I did buy some online but it wasn’t very good. I’ve got a kinshi bottle in there now but haven’t seen any activity
>>5062093how big is your kinshi bottle and what instar is your larva?my L2 prosopocoilus giraffa is in a 1.1L kinshi bottle rn
>>5062607It’s probably about a litre. Once it warms up I’ll make some more flake soil and I’ll collect some more adult stages if I have to
>>5062670>I’ll collect some more adult stages if I have toWdym?
