When did these guys become so well known? I remember when I was younger having this book of weird animals and one of them was the axolotls and I felt so cool knowing this weird thing existed. But nowadays they seem to be everywhere, I went into a store recently and there were tons of axolotl plushes and merchandise on the shelves
>>5064480At one point there were many species that were endangered, so conservation groups went on public awareness campaigns to help raise funding to get them more habitable range (buy property suitable for axlotls to live in)thats how i remember it, anyways
>>5064480They were in every single "TOP 10 CRAZIEST LOOKING ANIMALS!!!" lists from back in the day, which is kinda funny once you learn that actually every fucking salamander looks like an axolotl when in their tadpole stage and axolotls aren't even the only salamander that stay babies forever
I thought it was because someone figured out they kind of looked like mudkip IRL and memed them into popular culture.
>>5064500I think it's because of the albino ones. They look similar to blobfish which also were always on those lists. The normal gray axolotls aren't that weird looking.
>>5064480I think they just became a meme at some point because they look cute
>>5064574>became a memei herd u leik mudkipz
>>5064480I remember being flabbergasted that so many kids learned of these things through minecraft. Hell, when the lady presenting them for the first time said she "recently learned about them" it through me for a loop. Axolotls aren't ubiquitous, sure, but they've been in pop culture for goddamn decades.
