Winter is almost here.
If you have hedgehogs living near you, consider putting out some food at night to help the newborns who didn't manage to fatten up enough.
Even a cheap bag of peanuts can go a long way, they love it and it'll really help them gain weight.
>>
>>5069401
Can I catch them and keep them as pets instead? That way they'll get ALL the peanuts :)
>>
>>5069404
They are nocturnal wild animals, anon. They aren't pets, they are extremely solitary animals.
Don't make their life miserable by keeping them inside.
>>
>>5069401
I was promised a tick orb.
>>
>>5069405
Awww. But they're so cute though. Will they mind if I catch them to look at and maybe pet for a couple minutes and then release them?
>>
>>5069410
If your in the EU it's likely illegal but enforcement will vary, it's also a bit of a who is going to know situation
As a wild animal, they will have fleas and other parasites that can carry disease to you
Generally, they are solitary animals that don't like being handled, that's why they're covered in spikes
All in all, it's a bad idea. Just leave out some food for them
>>
>>5069422
Sounds like it's for the best to let them be. Shame. Maybe there's some other timeline with domesticated hedgehogs.

That one looks happy.
>>
>>5069545
All hedgie posters are based.
You're just a stupid faggot.
>>
>>5069741
Objectively incorrect. The one that was spamming threads and got absolutely btfo by badgerchad was cringe and not based.
>>
>>5069542
Thanks, but the previous attempts weren't successful (first time using resin, too). I still want to craft the perfect orb, crystal clear and full of ticks, to send to one random anon in those threads.
Here are the attempts, if you're curious about the previous failures: https://desuarchive.org/an/thread/4991326

Peanuts for insectivores? Around here people advice only scrambled egg, high quality cat food or actual insects.

>>5069431
Just attract one to your garden and you'll have some company around or soon after nightfall.

I usually give them cat food too and quail eggs (one of them goes crazy for those), but many individuals are surprisingly picky. Yet they will all eat peanuts, which is high fat food, perfect for storing that little emergency extra fat needed to survive winter.
...some really have the strangests food habits, (old) pic related. What a gangster.

Well if mine likes peanuts there are usually some in the garden because someone next door feeds the crows or magpies with peanuts and they throw them around everywhere.
I haven't seen him for weeks now though I bet he already went to bed.

>Well if mine likes peanuts there are usually some in the garden because someone next door feeds the crows or magpies with peanuts and they throw them around everywhere.
Haha, it's quite the other way round around here: crows and magpie make a rucus in the morning, eating the hedgehogs' leftovers.
>I haven't seen him for weeks now though I bet he already went to bed.
I hope he'll make it through winter. Sleep tight, hedgie.

Last one I saw was whizzing across a street like fucking sanic

Food is paying off: he gained ~90g in a week.
>>
>>5070443
What market weight do you usually shoot for?
>>
>>5070464
At least 600g, 700g to 800g if possible to increase their chance of surviving hibernation.
>>
>>5069401
You should have your own tv show where you do the Bob Ross thing, but with your tick balls and where you teach people about hedgies. Hedgies are wondrous creatures.
>>
>>5070018
>insectivores
They primarily eat insects, but they're technically omnivores.
>>
>>5069401
I wish I had wild hedgehogs near me. I live in America so I just see raccoons or meth zombies rustling around my garden at night. :(
>>
>>5072424
but you do have opposums who are just as based

Since >>5070018 recommended scrambled eggs, I made some for the past couple of nights.
Let me tell you: they do not give a damn about my scrambled eggs, they'll go straight for the cat food and ignore my food. It's somewhat vexating.

Hedgehogs are vastly superior to badgers.
>>
>>5072366
Here they're mostly snailivores, which is fitting for french hedgehogs I guess
>>
>>5073152
I wouldn't eat your scrambled eggs either
Try not putting salt in them and not as cooked
>>
>>5069788
maybe try working with resin first and use some substitute for ticks. make the perfect orb first with something that behaves similar in resin, and then at the end you can do one with ticks

For the first night this autumn, it's freezing outside. There was some lovely snow this morning, it held on and hardened during the day.
Most underweight hedgehogs are going to go to their eternal sleep soon. I keep on offering food.
>>5075198
I put absolutely no salt in there. Only eggs (and butter for cooking).
>>5075285
>something that behaves similar in resin
What would behave as frozen ticks? Good advice nonetheless!
>>5075177
I wanted to attach a false moustache on a hedgie, put it on a baguette and take a pic for you, but it's cold tonight and there's no one in sight.
>>
>>5075625
Then put salt in there
>>
>>5075625
I hope all hedgies make it. Thank you for doing great work.

This one wasn't going to make it, weighing only 320g. Probably born in late summer. Therefore, I decided to take it in for winter; I'll release it as soon as the hedgehogs come out of hibernation, usually somewhere in late march.
Seems relaxed enough.

Set up for its first night. Complete will food (wet & dry cat food, peanuts) and water. I'll buy hay tomorrow to make a nice little layer that I'll change daily (with newspaper underside to make cleaning easier).
My little plastic igloo has little success.
>>
>>5076109
>>5076111
I am glad you took them in. Will they sleep all winter since your house will be warm or will they run around with you? I am sure they will like the igloo eventually.

>Will they sleep all winter since your house will be warm or will they run around with you?
As long as there is warmth and food, it will not hibernate.
>will they run around with you?
They are not pets. If you let one in a room, it will simply anxiously trot along the walls.
>I am sure they will like the igloo eventually
Well... looks like this one really isn't the crispiest potato crisp in the bag!

Do you ever come across bald hedgehogs? They look weird.
>>

idk maybe some organic material that is roughly the same size as the ticks, maybe frozen grapes or somethig, or frozen raisins
>>
>>5076538
Hedgehogs prefer meat
