>A five-year-old male Sumatran orangutan named Pustakawan, who was known as Kawi, unfortunately died at Prague Zoo this morning. The tragic event was caused by Kawi’s youthful recklessness and a game in which he underestimated his physical abilities. Half an hour before the zoo opened, he let go of the rope while swinging and fell into a water moat, where he drowned as a result of the accident.
:( nest in peace angel. he was far too young. this is heartbreaking, they need to stop using moats in enclosures.

anons, would you like to come back in your next life as a pongo? the downsides of course include all the deforestation, high probability of becoming an orphan, and/or getting shot yourself. but on the bright side your flanges look sick as fuck.

if I could specify being born to a rehabilitated mother on one of those sanctuary islands, yeah, I think that would be pretty dope
regular supply of food
no predators
reduced risk of poaching
lots of friends nearby to wrestle
getting to cuddle with orange mother in a big leafy nest
sounds pretty comfy desu

Lovely thread you guys have going on here. I've scrolled past these a million times and never took the time to check them out.
I've got a serious question, however. Orangs have 48 chromosomes and people with downs have 47 (1 extra chromosome 21). Is there any correlation as to why ornags look like they have downs syndrome to their 24 pairs of chromosomes? It's always been uncanny how similar they look to people with downs.
>>
>>5111467
it's less that Pongos (and all non-human apes for that matter) have extra chromosomes and more that humans have a fused chromosome, specifically chromosome 2
there have been cases of Down's in Pongos as well as Chimps, but the information is scant and what little there is can mostly only be found in non-English sources
as for why Pongos and Down's people look so similar, I'd say it's a case of correlation rather than causation, like how they look similar to east-asian people (Mongoloid) without any of the bizarre genetic mismatches that went into the actual creation of chinkies
pic is Jimmy, the only confirmed case of Pongo Down's I could find a picture of
>>

>>5111475
I think the most fascinating part is that Down's causes neoteny (retaining baby characteristics). In that pic Jimmy, despite looking like an infant, is really 20 years old based on dental estimates.
But 100% the resemblance is just a coincidence. One of the reasons Downies look like that is because the nasal bridge stays flat throughout development (which in turn makes the eyes look hooded). Pongos just naturally have flat noses and hooded lids.

This especially sucks because she was one of the last big voices expressing skepticism for the joke they're calling "sustainable" palm oil.
Even the most shameless RSPO shills (like Michelle Desilets) would shut up real quick when Dr. Galdikas showed up. A dark day for pongos.
