How do I stop these fucking things from buzzing around my horses and draining all their blood?
I have a dilemma. There's a vinyard/foal factory ten minutes from me that does this big tour where they drink all the wine they make and then check out the best mares. All my friends that are enthused by horses don't drink and all of my wine acquaintances don't care about horses. I really want to do the tour but they won't take one feller on it no matter how upstanding he is.
>>5073423I'd suggest a horse general meetup, but getting anons here wine drunk before putting them in close proximity to mares seems like a bad idea

Prague rooftop horse sculpture
>>5073578why>The installation, titled Šemík Happy End, has quickly attracted attention from both residents and visitors.>Created by sculptor Jakub Flejšar, the eight-hundred-kilogram installation reimagines the story of Šemík, the legendary horse that saved his master Horymír by jumping from Vyšehrad into the Vltava River, only to later succumb to his injuries. Flejšar said his goal was to offer an alternative, more optimistic ending for the horse, symbolizing courage, hope, and new beginnings.>“Art is meant to make us pause from our routine and evoke emotions, whether delight, surprise, or even annoyance,” Flejšar told Novinky.cz. “I am satisfied that the sculpture is engaging people and sparking discussion.”https://www.expats.cz/czech-news/article/controversial-new-horse-sculpture-on-prague-rooftop-sparks-public-debate

Can anyone explain why the term “horse’s ass” is used as a pejorative when the asses of horses have been universally admired for pretty much all of human history?
>>5075869
>>5075869Spent a few minutes looking it up, but there doesn't seem to be a conclusive answer. Best I could find was "Horses raise their tails when they're about to shit, giving you a clear view of their ass." A fun titbit I found whilst searching was that, supposedly, the reason the standard-gauge railway is 1435 mm / 4 ft 8½ in is because that was roughly the width needed for a roman chariot to accommodate the rear ends of two horseshttps://dsimian.com/2024/02/20/the-history-of-the-middle-finger-importance-of-the-horses-ass/
>>5075912The rail thing is one of those false facts that go around. The truth is far more tedious and dull.
>>5075935Seems legit to me and makes sense that the width of a carriage (wide enough for two horses) would carry over to mechanized rail lines, due to builders using the same tools as for building carriages.

>>5070904Recent work has shown that they are capable of linguistic thought and not only can associate a word with a state like having blanket on or off, that they can project a command to humans based on their expectations of a future state. On days that are hot they can ask for blankets to be removed and blankets to be put on when its cold https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0168159116302192and more controversially, mostly because they have no real manipulator digits they pass the mirror test https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33713273/With the latest stuff being published in cognitive neuroscience horses are proving to be one of the smartest animals pretty much up there with dogs. They can learn from watching other horses horses for example and studies of wild horses are showing cultural transmission of herd behavior around stallion behavior. Its honestly not surprising because if you pull out a horse brain and look at it, a horse brain looks like a carnivorous mammal. Their encephalization quotient is point 0.9 which places them near dogs in size to body ratio and horses just have incredibly dense neocortex and prefrontal cortex along with well developed hippocampus and limbic systems unlike most other hooved animals, or other animals in general. Going by their brain anatomy and what I have seen in papers on behavior I'd say they are honestly only dumber than elephants/gorillas/ smartest cetaceans and are around dogs and parrots in mental ability -that is about as smart as a human child before language acquisition. They are close to a 2 -3 yo human and essentially eternal toddlers.

Cows may like to squeeze into the underbrush and hang out in there, but horses get nervous going someplace where they can't see very far, and no horse likes to be the first one to do a thing. (They are NOT a "hold my beer" species, more of a "I'm not trying that, you first" species) Mazes are not gonna be their thing, and anxiety hinders learning.

>>5076420>She would have sent the foal to the glue factory if it didn't jump well.Doubt. It's pretty normal for parents to feel proud of their kids and want them to succeed, and transferring those feelings onto a horse is not unusual. If the horse is that good at the competition, she most likely loves doing it.

>>5076421And selling the horse you brought up from foal, so you can start all over? I don't like the game, if that is how it is played. Not selling what amounts to family members off.
>>5076420It's just part of the regular 4H pipeline. I remember part of the judging score I got for calves I was showing was how much they brought at the 4H auction. The system is designed to introduce young people to the economic reality of farming, they're not house pets. And even if they were house pets, if you have your dog bred, most people will sell all of N-1 of the puppies instead of just keeping them all.
There's a hotel where for no extra cost a shetland pony can watch you sleep.
>>5076466I prefer free range horses when I stay at a horsetel, it's a more intimate equine experience that way
>>5076463You sort of need to sell the pups or they can get littermate syndrome and make your life hell. The ideal setup is having breeding stock you keep around as pets and then sell off their children.
>>5076475They are the only animal I can tolerate watching me sleep. Like stalwart observers. You know they won't do anything bad to you.
>>5076480they will literally step on you to make sure you aren't dead. they do it to each other when another horse has been laying down to long to urge them to stand up before they get stomach issues or stuck

>>5076412I hate this sort of fucking captioningI can’t even read it. Why are people fine with this? The whole point of captions is for them TO BE READABLE, not flash across your screen before you can blink just because it grabs your attention.
>>5076595It's dopamine releasing brainrot captioning style. Also wtf.
>>5076600It’s just two silly fillies fooling around anon, nothing to worry about
>>5076550So that's why that shetland pony keeps digging me with her hoof when I lie down. She acts like she doesn't like me but she doesn't want me to die. That's kinda nice.
>>5076550and in contrast my girlfriend gave me a weird look when I asked her to step on me...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=637HWW0O2kg
>>5076609Probably is. Horses only go into deep REM sleep where they need to lie down for about 2 hours a day and can nap on the feet for the less important sleep. If you a horse is sleeping out the ordinary amount while lying the other horses will try to keep it on its feet so stomach issues don’t get worse/ it isn’t as easy for a predator to catch. The herd basically bullies a sick horse for its own good. If a horse sees you a person that doesn’t normally sleep that often in the fields sleeping in the field it probably is concerned and trying to keep you from dying

Why can all other animal trainers train their animals with positive reinforcement, including fucking bears and tigers but horses need to be hit and dominated? its a herd animal that wants to do good, if you can't bribe it with treats you are a tard
>>5079034They don't. Horse is an ancient animal from prehistory so animal husbandry gets caught in the ruts sometimes. Frankly the obsessive and enthusiasts have been making traction and getting more positive results so it's not a long way off with the rest of them. It's just the old guard that really got jaded and really hate horses that keep it going.
>>5079034>horses need to be hit and dominated?Like the other guy said, that's bullshit, there have been people saying it's bullshit for centuries now, but traditions die hard.

>>5079238The horse should not be treated with brutality, for this is the way to spoil him.”“Anything forced and misunderstood can never be beautiful-Xenophon Ancient GreeceThe horse must be treated with care, for his spirit is easily broken and not easily restored Columena - Ancient Rome The best doctor for a horse is the one who loves him - ancient Roman proverb recorded by vegetius The ancient west believed they were semi sentient and has psyches like people. The recorded writings suggest there was a cultureal expectation to treat them with more care than human slaves
>>5079024wtfhow do they now the horse is at its limit? a normal running horse can stop whenever they can't go anymore or at least slow down but in this absolute torture device the horse would stumble and probably break a leg (death sentence) or its neck by falling down and over those bars in front of it while that thing keeps going.
>>5079034Because most asshole brainlet humans can simply get away with it compared to lions who'd just rip the human's head off in return. Hitting the horse is the easiest way for them. There are many ways to train horses that are 100% without violence but that takes time, lots of patience and a true feel for horses. My “helper” had shut the stall door because her horse was trying to go into that stall instead of its own stall, and the way she never accepted responsibility for her part of my near death experience was a factor in the breakup.

Did the horse break out of the pasture or is this filmed from its pasture? Is the horse a mare/gelding/stallion? What breed? Who is the other guy that comes to the rescue of the guy being attacked? Was the horse known for behaviour problems prior to this? What injuries did the attacked guy sustain from this event (yeah I can see he runs off but that could just be adrenaline). And why is the video named DIomedes? Is it the name of the horse or the place this incident took place or the guy getting attacked? I have so many questions.

>>5081420>>5081580Well, I can answer some of those questions. After some reverse image searching, I found these from November 2021https://tn.com.ar/increible/2021/11/27/un-caballo-ataco-a-su-jinete-y-causo-preocupacion/https://www.lavanguardia.com/natural/20211130/7899472/video-viral-ataque-caballo-jinete.htmlwhich say that it's a viral video of a horse attacking its rider at a training centre in Argentina, but no reason is given, merely speculation of animal abuse. As for Diomedes, it comes from the Mares of Diomedes, which were four mythological man-eating mares owned by Diomedes of Thrace. One of Heracles' twelve labours was to go and steal them from him.

>>5081595I can fix them.
>>5081609The greatest Mare of all time, Lisette, was a man eater and killed several people. You don't need to "fix" a Diomedian mare.
>>5081558The body slam was cool. IDK he must have been doing something stupid I assume. Other Anon said his mare started kicking him for no reason but I bet this guy was being mean to it and whipping it or something. Like that donkey that bites the guys leg and he screams like a girl.

https://www.petbook-magazine.com/horses/easing-of-blood-rule-in-equestrian-sports-sparks-protests>FEI relaxes blood rule>horses bleeding is no longer automatic grounds for disqualification in equestrian sportshow do we feel about this?
>>5082133>Natural injuries—such as a bitten tongue—will no longer result in disqualification. The rider may clean the horse’s mouth and continue.>Minor injuries caused by the rider—such as wounds from spurs—will now only result in a warning.>If a second warning occurs within twelve months, a fine of up to 1,000 Swiss francs and a one-month suspension may be imposed.>More serious injuries will still lead to disqualification and disciplinary proceedings. The change isn't as bad as how the title makes it sound. I'm unsure.
I love horses and hate abusing animals, but I'm curious what people against it would argue. Same with the horse diving being "abuse." Is a horse diving a few times a day more abusive than having them pull a wagon, or run fast?I went to >reddit and it sounds like the change was made to balance minor injuries. A balance between allowing the horse to have minor scrapes or injuries caused on its own, vs abusive rough bit and spur usage. Trying to reduce eliminations from a horse clipping itself while punishing people who injure the horse. Then the next comment blames Trump lol.
>>5082216>Is a horse diving a few times a day more abusive than having them pull a wagon, or run fast?I have no idea. Maybe it's abuse, or maybe it's just that Karens think anything that's not "normal" must be abuse.

I think horses are stupid.
