>there are people who come to an animal board and argue for exterminating entire species
Literally me.
>>5070777Give me one good reason why we shouldn't exterminate screw worm flies.
>>5070954Some reasons why parasites are good for the environment >redistribute nutrients (mosquitos suck blood from deer, use protein to lay eggs, fish eat larvae; essentially deer fed the fish)>cull weak animals, getting parasites in the wild is inevitable and only the strong can handle it>There was a study that showed some wading birds actually suck ass at catching fish. The only fish they were able to catch were the ones crippled by parasites and couldnt swim properly
>>5070934
>>5070777They are parasitic diabolic narcissists that deserve to be deleted from earth
>>5070777animals and nature board. if there's invasive species destroying nature they should be eliminated
>>5071056None of that justifies the screw worm in particular.>eggs only get laid in the flesh of terrestrial mammals (no nutrient transfer to fish)>causes excruciating pain in strong animals as well as weak>doesn't infect fish and therefore doesn't feed birdsOutside of one of the most painful parasitizations in the animal kingdom during its larval stage, its only contribution to the ecosystem is as a perfectly ordinary fly, an ecological role which is quite adequately filled by other fly species. You could maybe argue that they make the lives of land predators somewhat easier, but they already target old, sick, or weak prey animals so the assistance is marginal at best. Moreover, the species has already been eradicated from North America with no discernible ecological damage.
>>5071087Why hasn't the white man been killed off yet?
>>5071417The white man is the only one that cares about the conservation and documentation of nature.
>>5071421after centuries of genociding countless species, sure.
paleoschizo is more mold than person now from the holes in his brain rotting
>>5071424should've genocided yours
>>5070777LiesNobody comes to your board
>>5070777Chinese moment
>>5071096The fish were just examples I knew from the top of my head. Didn't say they apply to screwworms specifically.Using mammal protein as a larva to become a fly that gets eaten by something else is an example of nutrient transfer between trophic levels. And it would benefit land predators by making their prey weaker. But also I know what you're doing. You're giving me the absolute worst example of a parasite to make my argument sound stupid. I really don't give a shit if screwflies go extinct, or guinea worms or ticks. Honestly I hope they do, but you need discretion because things like mosquitos are important.
>>5071498I wish for someone to breed mosquitoes whose bite doesn't itch.what about ticks?
We should expand the range of life on earth and in the galaxy. There's so much empty space for life to take hold and all we need to do is gather and place resources in ways that will build new ecosystems.
midgesfuck midges
>>5070777I'm only against it because every time we try something like this 70 years later some complication arises and if there's not a distinct privately funded entity to sue half measures to will be taken to correct it out of taxpayer money. Basically we need to be able to sue universities if their published works contribute to action plans that cause ecological damage first. We're at a level we can save most critters dna even if we can't replicate all of them yet.
>>5071056I always wonder if we're "underparasitised", like most of wild animals seem to be ridelled with some kind of parasite or another or at least get a good blood suck every now and then from ticks and other critters, so my guess would be that animal bodies are kinda used to it, it's a normal thing. maybe something is missing for us since we got pretty much rid of most parasite ifections for ourselves
>>5073397Both actually, lot of helminths secrete immunosupressants. Which can be beneficial for like rheumatism and inflammatory conditions. Then you have parasites like toxoplasmosis which does the complete opposite and promotes inflammation everywhere. We can use the right kinds parasites but we also need diets and other environmental factors to make sure they don't overpopulate or do things we don't want them to. Pills just seem to be the easier solution in this world of free choice eating and high mobility populations exposing us to 1000% more viral infections than we ever were meant to handle.
>>5070777orcas and hippos should all the killed though
>>5071417It's a keystone species
>>5073397Having hands is really, really beneficial at dealing with external parasites. Add the fact we live in groups so someone can always pick off a parasite from our back and we're pretty good against themMost parasites can just sit on their host's back and they can't do anything about it
FUCK bedbugsFUCK cockroachesFUCK mosquitoesFUCK fleasFUCK ticksFUCK redbugsFUCK pantry moths
>>5071498mosquitos kill more people than pretty much any other species on earthpeople who want to preserve species for the sake of it are so dumb
>>5073764>
yes shit ills and niggers need to be steralized
>>5073756Ticks are extremely important to forest ecosystems, and they spread an allergy that makes you allergic to red meat. Which is a huge plus. Ticks are an ecologist's best friend.
>>5074012>they spread an allergy that makes you allergic to red meat. Which is a huge plus.>haha it's good when people infected with a government manufactured disease that makes their joints hurt and their nervous tissue inflameActual insanity.
