Anyone who actually devotes a part of their lives to helping foxes is nothing like that. And neither is the average facebook or tiktok wildlife appreciator who special fondness is for foxes. What you're describing is low-information chronically-online zoophilliac gooners who include foxes among their roster of 10 other species they like. These folks are mostly harmless. Tho they may be loud, the closest they've ever gotten to a fox is at a zoo.

Foxes are the prettiest and best animal in the world, but red foxes are over-represented and their tails are too long. We should instead appeciate all foxes equally.

NO. Gray foxes are superior because they're the 'basal canid' fox - the original fox species that started it all.

I think foxes are great. Foxes are one of the few things left in my life that bring me any semblance of joy. I likely have foxtism now. I did not always have this condition, it started 7 years ago, and became stage fox about 4 years ago. I donate to charities that benefit foxes, because I like seeing them be successful. I would never own a fox, since I do not think I could properly care for it, and I believe the longer foxes stay away from domestication, the farther they are from the typical abuse many pets suffer under. I also love foxes spiritually, and I donate and volunteer for a shrine related to foxes. Do not mistake this for wanting to *be* a fox, I am happy with my humanity.
I understand how it happens, but I do not like people that harm foxes for fun or profit. I also do not believe many people could sexually love a fox without being abusive, and I suspect they love the idea of a fox more than the animal itself. If they did care about foxes well-being, they would not advocate for things that hurt foxes. Hurt foxes via cars, predation or furs may be a regrettable part of life, but sadists that torture foxes should be disassembled one rib at a time.

I would be more vocal about how much I like foxes, but I understand communities are judged by their worst members, and I do not want to associate with diaper wearing furries daddy uwu :3
Therefore, I will only say in public that I think foxes are great, occasionally buy fox merch (limit 1 plushie), quietly donate to hopefully better fox lives, and not share too many of the hundreds of fox images I collected from this thread.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk. Consider donating to the wildlife aid foundation or your local charity

>I suspect they love the idea of a fox more than the animal itself.
Exactly this. Photos of foxes capture *some* of their essence, but art is less accurate and only captures the human's impression of their essence. And neither is equal to what foxes are *really* like.

>>
>>5080602
I used to have the same stance as >>5080608 when I was younger because of furries and having too much proximity to them.

I eventually just learnt to hate furries and enjoy foxes in culture whether it be:
The foxes living in my back garden and starting families with the bold one occasionally bonding with me throughout the decades and just self domesticating themselves and wandering into the house from time to time to chill.

The local wildlife rehab that I volunteer for would be very upset with me if they knew that some foxes were very happily living around me.
Domesticated, sanctuary or pet surrender or fur farm rescue foxes just being weird and goofy and exhibiting habits that are unlike wild foxes.

Fictional culture where they speak, whether be anthropomorphized as an actual fox or one standing on two legs.
Western Fiction:
Depicted as a brave sly thief or trickster
Depicted as a beta ass bitch that wants to be a fierce predator but has a heart of gold
Depicted as an adventurous hero with vanity problems or a massive ego
Depicted as the token autist

Japanese fiction:
Guardian heroes due to their connection to Inari worship whether it be in space, interdimensional travel, the spirit realm or on earth
Ninjas and more Ninjas and more Ninjas
Yokai or other mystical beings that can either be malicious or beneficial entities
Superheroes

Fictional versions of foxes I don't care about or dislike:
Yiff yaff femboy cumslut furfaggotry which encompasses around 95% of fursonas
Fursona that is just a human living a regular human life doing human things unless there is an extra bit of charm to it, although this is most furries yet again.
Generic forest dwelling fantasy furry usually found in western media foxes like Magic the Gathering or any medieval fantasy depictions
Generic SD chibi kemoshota kawaii uguu foxes
>>
>>5080682
This also does mean that a setting like Disney's Robin Hood does appeal to me in which the character is more than just a regular dude in a regular setting, as opposed to Nick Wilde and Zootopia where the movie itself is one of the most boring things to have been inflicted upon me. I've heard furries ate that shit up and latched onto it for nigh upon a decade though.

I don't think Fox Village is overcrowded, but gives the feeling of it being overcrowded because the foxes despite having a lot of room to roam in, like to huddle together, so when you see the multifox foxcrash pileup or sleeping in every single box it gives the feeling of it being crowded. They're just different and not wild, and like being closer to each other, especially during the winter where your next door neighbor is also a pillow.

It's definitely not wild behavior that's for sure, given foxes in the wild are very territorial and will chase other foxes of the same gender out.
However in captivity + being the descendants of fur farms (bred for easy handling + coats) means half the wild was bred out of them in the first place (which is why they can't be released). Which then has had a few generations (25 years) of being bred for friendliness towards humans as well as co-habituation.

If it brings any comfort even though it is a tourist attraction - The fact it is a tourist attraction is what allows them to keep all the foxes fed without having to ask for donations. The owner also cares for all the foxes (he was the one who rescued them all from a fur farm and provided them a sanctuary) and isn't doing it simply just for being a tourist attraction. Given foxes are a cultural symbol of good luck in Japan it also works as opposed to that one Buddhist Monk in China who did the same and wasn't able sustain the foxes (He rescued 170 or so fur farm foxes) and released them onto temple grounds. However there last that was heard of it was they were struggling with donations to feed all the foxes.

In the case with Zao Fox Village, it has found a way to sustain the generations of foxes without begging for donations or running low on funds. Foxes in captivity are able to produce more dopamine through its genetics and ironically are less prone to having a heart attack and just dying from being on constant edge their wild counterparts and live happier lives.

"Why don't we just domesticate them all then?"
- We don't have the resources to look after a bajillion foxes and they don't make good pets even when domesticated. They have a very specific diet and destroy things like crazy because of instinctual digging habits.
- Higher maintenance and stinkier than cats
- Don't provide the same level of companionship / usefulness as dogs
- Deleting the wild fox population would fuck up the ecosystem
>>
>>5080770
In the end fur farms still exist.
People who want to save them from these fur farms exist.
People who want to perpetuate the generations of foxes that have become habituated with humans exist.
People who disagree with that exist.

If you buy out a fur farm to rescue foxes you need:
-Land you own or have permission to use for the foxes to live on.
-A plan to receive donations or make money out of it or neuter all the foxes so they don't rampantly breed / starve to death
-If you desire to keep the generations going you will need a stable influx of money - Zao Fox Village manages this by turning it into a tourist attraction
-Almost all US Fox Sanctuaries boomed out of COVID and are reliant on donations and personal funds to sustain, and all the foxes are neutered, so no new kits are born unless they arrived pregnant.

Ultimately you need a plan, you can't just buy and release them because they aren't wild foxes and won't survive in the wild, and if they did, would introduce genetic diseases and habits not suited for the wild. Animal activists who break into fur farms and release the animals ruin the surrounding ecosystem and are uneducated on the matter. Animal activists who abduct pet foxes and release them into the wild are outright cruel and malicious retards.

So in the case of the foxes (and other animal rescues) living on Temple Grounds (2019 Mudanjiang), these were in around the hundreds, and many have survived and are thriving from what we last knew, but of course nowhere in as good condition as the ones living in relative comfort in Zao Fox Village.

Examples of fur farm rescues that had not enough planning:
2020 in Hebei, China: 5000 foxes and tanuki rescued, sanctuary overrun, overpacked and full of disease with no means to feed them properly. No other reports afterwards.
2016 Beijing, China: Mercy released fur farm foxes overran a village, killing all their livestock and spreading disease before they were all culled. Some survivors were rescued and sent to a sanctuary.
1995 Nykarleby / Evijärvi, Finland: 400 fur farm foxes released into wild, they all starved to death. Some resorted to cannibalism before death.

Multiple much larger mink release disasters over the years.
A case where 1100 released rescue cats didn't know where to go and ended up all drowning in a reservoir in China.

Most of the other cases of cannibalism are from abandoned fur farms (Poland, Finland, Russia, China) where the foxes have just been left to die after the fur farm went bankrupt, leading to people finding survivors on the fur farm eating each other or the corpses of their siblings and cagemates.

To truly save foxxo you must also have plans to feed foxxo for life.

You're visiting in winter so... make sure you wrap up warm, and here's what to expect:
Most activity very early in the morning - Foxes are crepuscular and are most active at dawn just before the sun comes up and at sunset just after the sun goes down, just before Zao Fox Village closes

What this means is most foxes will be at almost maximum floof in preparation for the winter (as opposed to them scraggly looking during summer as they shed their coats) and just sleeping most of the day, so they'll be bunched up in groups just sleeping it out like every day. Watch out for foxes getting too close to you and investigating your clothes as they will nip and tug on you out of curiosity. Foxes are foxes if you drop anything they will yoink it and it's going to be buried in fuck knows where

Zao Fox Village intentionally closes 1hr earlier at 4PM during winter day and doesn't extend the day any further past sunset because when the foxes wake up they can get very bold and really start harassing visitors, although you can catch them waking up just before closing time

No petting allowed for the outdoor foxes, as signposts and guides will tell you they bite, they explore everything with their mouths. If one is getting too bold and nipping on you too much to investigate you and you don't like it you can always stand tall and boldly walk towards them to intimidate them away and assert dominance

There's a fox cuddling session held at 11am and 2pm every day where you get one of the extremely docile and friendly foxes that live indoors and get special treatment. They are brought out in tiny cages for easier handling (don't worry they don't live in these cages) where you'll be instructed how to cuddle the fox, and the staff will take photos of you cuddling the fox with your phone.

Feeding them treats happens on the weekends where you toss treats at them from a safe distance inside a building - This is where all of the foxes standing on their hind legs photos come from.

Oh fuck I confused it with kitakitsune, I've been to zao fox village. I meant kitakitsune

The trick is to take the treats (dog food) out and they will all come climb on you lol
>>
their stink is the sign that they aren't meant to be pets but it's still unfair
>>
>>5080918
Kitakitsune in Hokkaido is more of an animal sanctuary and rehabilitation center compared to Zao Fox Village. These foxes are actually wild foxes native to Japan, mostly the Ezo Kitsune (Vulpes Vulpes Japonica), Tanuki, and some Kita Kitsune (Vulpes Vulpes Schrenkii) and do not approach humans or each other nearly as much, and will exhibit behaviors much more similar to wild foxes (skittish, territorial, keep their distance away from each other and from humans). There are no hands on experiences with these foxes given they are far more wild and still have their own wild, hunting instincts in comparison to Zao Fox Village who are descendants of the Canadian (and partially Scandinavian / Russian) fur farm trade (Mostly Vulpes Vulpes Fulva) who were not native to Japan. They will still see humans as sources of food, but won't see humans or other foxes as companions like in Zao Fox Village.

Summing it up:
Kitakitsune - Native fox sanctuary for wild fox and tanuki rescues. Residents come from outside and do not breed.
Zao Fox Village - Partially domesticated foxes saved from the fur farm trade. Residents are born in Zao Fox Village and their breeding is controlled.

This is the fundamental difference that both foreigners and locals do not realize between Kitakitsune and Zao Fox Village. The foxes they have at each location are fundamentally and genetically different and come from different backgrounds, hence the difference in how they are treated, and how they act. Several US based fox sanctuaries have noticed these in their fur farm rescues, finding that a lot of them are able to co-exist together, meaning you can pack a lot more fur farm rescue foxes together in a smaller face and they'd prefer it that way, with a handful that are still extremely territorial and selective so you still have to figure out who can go with who, those who only want human interaction and hate other foxes, or those who want to be by themselves entirely. Of course a lot of this is determined by whether or not they were imprinted at birth or not, but a lot more is also dependent on their genetics.

日本人ときつね 怪異・きつね百物語 by 笹間良彦 (scuffed formatting because I did not spend time to fix it yet, but the translation should be fine: https://files.catbox.moe/funtr2.pdf & images: https://files.catbox.moe/2uadvj.7z)
Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (the version on Gutenberg has "Miss Lien-hsiang, The Fox-girl" and "Miss Ying-ning; or, the laughing girl.")
2 stories from Traditional Chinese stories - Themes and Variations: https://files.catbox.moe/zm2jbw.pdf / https://files.catbox.moe/j8cnnq.pdf (it is said that the former here was the origin of fox romance stories in China; Huntington's book mentioned above discusses it and its successor with a happier ending: https://suaveg.com/fox-girl-qingfeng-lzzy/)

The Evolution of a Legend - A Comparison of the Character of Tamamo no Mae by Ian Stuart Ferguson

'Stories' category is self explanatory and the first link already has a ton of them; the other categories go in-depth about the background of why these stories were made in the first place. Hope you enjoy.

It's arctic foxes with leucism. You've got a white fox so the nose and the eyes are the only places where the lack of pigmentation will stand out. Compare to our friend here, they're also missing the "mascara" around the eyes.

Fun fact: foxes store extra fat/energy in their tails. When theatened by a predator, they can drop their tails to confuse their pursuer, allowing them to escape while the detached tail continues to move. Then they regrow a new tail over several weeks.
