I have a dog, a Havachon puppy over a year and few months old now (Pic related is not her but it is her species.) and i wanna know if she should get spayed.I heard that there's health benefits like her being able to live longer. Is this true?
>>5080655Wait until she's like 7-9 years old.
>>5080655wait until she has offspring at least
mutilation is gross
>>5080655At a year and a half she probably went through a couple heat cycles already so it would be good timing. But know that if you share a bed or let your dog stay loose when she sleeps in the house (as you should, to be honest) in her old age 90% of spayed dogs get urinary incontinence because without sex hormones their genitals tend to loosen up.
>>5080655only if you have male dog
>>5080841only if you get male dog together with female dog.
I thank you all for the responses and the information you have given me.Now i want to ask how does getting spayed effect a dog's behavior?I ask because the reason why my mom wants her spayed is because my dog has had behavior issues, growling at me and my dad and getting defensive and even biting us at times, but i say that that's just her personality and we already figured out how to interact with her, she's just a very serious guard dog for our mom and wants to be left alone when napping, she's not a violent dog, she's kind and even becomes very friendly with me and my dog when she stops being protective and her defensive mode only lasts for a few seconds.I think my mom is worried over nothing and that getting spayed won't change our family dog's personality or behavior, but i am afraid of what it might do to her, if getting spayed will alter her personality and behavior for the worse. Can i get info on what spaying does to a dog in terms of personality, behavior and mental health?
>>5080924Spaying helps with dominance aggression between dogs only, and if a male being neutered, can make them nicer to kids. Defensiveness and fear around adults can get worse.
>>5080934>Defensiveness and fear around adults can get worse.Thank you for this information.Yeah, my dog's problem is that she gets defensive aorund me and my dad, but it's only aorund me and my dad and even then it's only for a few seconds and under specific circumstances like when she's around my mom or when we touch apart of her body she doesn't like being touched.I doubt spaying would help her with that and we just gotta learn how to live by her rules whenever we're around her, something we already did.But i think my mom is coming to know this by now and now she's focused on the health benefits instead, doing her own research on it, this is why she believes that spayed dogs live longer and i wonder how true it is, although it does make sense considering one of our last dogs was spayed and lived well over a decade.Such a decision is so big to make i worry, you understand right?
>>5081005Was your dog abused AKA punished at all beyond weak shit like telling no and taking away their toys? Dogs like that need positive trust building… ANY real punishment will just teach them not to warn you before biting.
>>5081006No, she didn't receive any such treatment. The closest thing i can think of is when my mom got excited and took her to see a firework show that traumatized her. My mom feels bad about it and acknowledges it as a mistake but would a puppy really act defensive at growl at me and my dad over a firework show we were not apart of? Or is she really just that defensive about my mom and really doesn't want to be bothered when relaxing? She has a very "Don't approach me, i'll approach you" mentality and me and my family has come to respect that and worked with that.
Another question to be asked.Does spaying dogs cause them to bite less?
I got an update. My mom decided to bring her in to get spayed. Now she is more aggressive than usual and her barking sounds off, but i am going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say it's just because she's not feeling too good and she will be back to normal soon.Thank you all for your help and advice.Good day and God Bless.
>>5081926You ruined your dog. Enjoy bad joints, weight problems, and greater fear aggression.
>>5081940I tried saving her, i even prayed to God. It's my mom and to a lesser extent my dad who wanted her spayed as they kept saying all of her behavior issues were hormonal. I completely disagreed with that but they refused to listen and i hope and pray to God that this is only temporary. But no matter what we as a family are going to stay by her side and give her all the love we can give her from now to forever.
>>5081941Well that's good. Just do everything you can to keep her joints and weight healthy.
>>5081942Will do. I will also let my mom and dad know this. Well, mostly my mom as she's really the only person my dog is comfortable to be with.
>>5081942But i do wanna know the chances of such a thing happening and how much her age effects it.
>>5081940>>5081942if her growth plates were already fused already her joints are going to be fine
>>5080655You shouldn't fix a dog untill they're done growing and they've reached sexual maturity around 1-2
>>5083139While i dislike the term "fix" for such a thing i will give thanks for the advice and let you know that you're too late as she already got spayed.I still give thanks though and i appreciate your advice. She's over a year old y the way.
