Distributing computational tasks to non-brain ganglia is how octopi outperform their apparent brain size issue. Their arms do a lot of thought that doesn’t require conscious involvement, ie: spatial problem solving, memory storage. The human brain can even offload some tasks to the spine and gut.

If they're hiding inside a small crack from a predator, could one of their arms just decide to get out of the crack completely unprompted, thus becoming an easy meal for the predator? Having limbs that do stuff unconsciously when you're in the middle of the food chain seems problematic.
