hi /dog/, oldfag here, considering a dog after 20 years as a cat person. things have changed a lot since i had one in the 90s, like dog whisperer, grain free, clicker, invisible fence, doodles, etc going in and out of style

we live in the country and the county pound has an endless supply of shepherd mutts (picrel). my old dog didn't crate, went off leash, ate dog chow. everyone online has such aggro opinions now it's hard to figure out what's normal now. are there some good, not too extreme 101/refreshers on yt or books on training, feeding, social manners?

I need your help anons. My dog is breathing with some difficulty, like he is grasping for air but its not like panting when a dog is tired of running, altho it becomes like that just from walking from one room to another. It started friday night. On saturday he started drooling and he hasn't eaten since friday. I've been forcefully giving food mixed with milk on a syringe. He is very lethargic but aware, he was happy when I took him out to walk. Vet said it might fluid on his lung, but can't hear anything and the cause for that can be anything, even the heart but can't know nor do anything without AT LEAST $1300 upfront which I don't have. Example: dog jumps up on strangers.
When it is about to engage in this behaviour tell it sternly "(no) sit!" And praise it when it does sit. The dog will learn ij time that this is the behaviour you want from him in situations such as cheese (greeting or approaching strangers).

It's kinda funny how similar my dog is to me. She hates being around new dogs, when she gets a new toy she tries to cut her walk short because she wants to go back inside and play with her new toy, and now, she even picked up a crippling masturbation addiction.
Usually when It's time to eat she won't leave me the fuck alone. This time when we got back from her walk, she ran straight to the lambchop and started fucking It's brains out, I had to pull her away and put her in front of her bowl to get her off the damn thing.

Posting new puppy, got her saturday, she just turned 12 weeks. Border collie. She was super shy and withdrawn until last night. Now she's full on border collie mode.

I didn't intend to crate her, but she was so skittish when she first got here that I set one up, covered it in towels, and put a dog bed in it. She barely left it and didn't like being made to leave it for the first two days.

Now my other BC won't leave her alone. She simply adores him, and after a brief spate of jealousy- very brief, it seems- he accepted her as well. I'm worried they may play a little rough, as he only just turned a year and is barely out of puppyhood himself, but he's doing really well.

I just leave her crate door open unless i'm going to be gone a while. Now he's in there sleeping with her, and he's never been crated before, lol.

Only annoying thing is he instantly eats her food bowl and drains her water dish unless I separate them. She can take from his and he doesn't react, but I just transitioned him off puppy chow, so that's annoying and I don't want her having to deal adult kibble. But I guess I can put him back on puppy chow until this behavior is behind us.

My dog is 14 and she's pissing herself all the time, it's gotten better after some pills the vet gave us but she seems to be going a little blind and I don't think I'm ready for this. She's still cognitive and seems happy but I hate seeing her like this, I know the end is near and it sucks.

I buried my dog yesterday. He lived in crate for ten years with a blanket over it and was ignored by previous owner. They had another dog in there with him that died a few years ago and was in the crate for an entire day dead with him until they noticed. Really fucked. He never left my side after I brought him home. Anyways, RIP little bruh

Been trying to get my dog to stop barking aggressively at other dogs when we're on walks by distracting her with treats.
Good progress so far when it comes to dogs she already kinda liked or ignored but bigger dogs set her off especially if they start barking back or she already knows them and doesn't like them.
Online guides say to do do the treat distraction thing at longer distances but she starts seeing red the second she sees certain dogs no matter how far away.

Number one thing with seperation anxiety is to not make a big fuss when you return. Have her leave for short periods and then come back as nonchalantly as possible, maybe with someone else in the room, then extend the time slowly.

I don't have anyone else to tell this to right now so I'm going to blog here.

I woke up a few hours ago to a pounding on the floor, like someone hitting it with a stick. Since my mom has had some health issues I thought she fell or something, so I rushed upstairs. Well, she didn't, but she was passed out drunk in her bed with fucking chocolate smeared all over her face, and her dog was on the ground guarding a chocolate covered caramel. She had passed out with a tray of belgian variety chocolates on the bed and he got into it. And he's only like a 16lb shihtzu. At first I thought maybe he didn't eat much because there were a bunch of chocolates that were chewed on and spit out, including the caramel he was working on. He was drinking a lot of water as I got my mom and her bed cleaned up, and my gut said get him checked out so I called a nearby emergency vet clinic and they said you should come in (it was 3am). They induced vomiting and he threw up a LOT of chocolate. They also did various vet things, and I was able to bring him home and he's chillin now. $900 bill but the peace of mind is worth it.

God damn though. I'm not a religious person, but I have no explanation for what or how I was woken up. I'll take this as a little christmas miracle. Hug your dogs bros.

Today a dog she doesn't know was walking towards us on our side of the road and got pretty close but she was focused on me when I called her name and never even considered barking.
She used to bark at dogs she wanted to meet to get their attention, it's was like a whine mixed with a bark plus she'd pull on the leash but she's gotten very well behaved when it comes to small dogs or dogs she knows.
Bigger dogs or dogs that bark first are still a challenge. The problem is that we meet those rarely enough that it's hard to train her and also she has a really hard time staying calm so it's hard to grab her attention from the dog with treats before she starts barking like the guides say I should do.

Also there's one girl who walks a big dog half her height who drags her around while barking aggressively so idk if I can ever train the fear of bigger dogs out of her when there's always going to be that one asshole around. Haven't seen it in like a month thought.

My dog is prone to getting ear infections but the main issue is that he doesn't let me flush is ear with medicine/preventive care. I've been trying over the past 3 weeks to desensitize him to the bottle by placing the bottle on the ground and rewarding with a treat when he sniffs it. Moving onto moving the bottle close to his face and no reaction gets him a treat. But the moment I open the bottle and actually try to get near his ear he freaks. The time it took me to try to desensitize him the ear healed up on it's own. So I'm really at a loss on what to do here. I've considered pinning him to the ground to get the stuff in his ear the next time but that'll make him hate it even more. Any tips or tricks please guys?

I dont know if this applies to you because my dog only gets mild ear infections a couple of times in the summer, mostly due to garden hose horseplay/mud removal where he gets splashed inside his floppy ear without me noticing and not airing out. nothing that requires medication.

his ear infections are resolved with 50% white vinnegar + 50% lukewarm distilled water solution which I soak a big cotton ball with, place in his ear, tilt his head, then squeeze the liquid out of the cotton, filling his canal. then close his ear flap over sealing it in and sort of rub and "pump" (sort of like unclogging a toilet). after that I let go the flap, tilt his head to drain, then run to escape the head shake shrapnel

obviously, dont use vinnegar if your dog has sores or scratches in his ear
