This gives them their only real scent, an acrid, urate odor. But it is also antiseptic, stopping or killing microbial growth.Old World Vultures don't do this. They do have a scent, but it is totally unexpected, resembling perfume, cologne, potpourri or baby powder! It is probably a result of their preen oil, which is used to condition their feathers, much as we sometimes use hair oil, pomade or mustache wax.
