There is a clear acknowledgement on his face that he knows he is going to die, he knows he is a living being and that he is about to end. Sorrow, resignation, the coldness of true mortal despair. No simple animal can feel what he's showing in this image.

Context: the leopard killed this baby babboon's mother, but when it found the baby, it was protective of it (mothernal instincts? maybe it found it "cute"?), took it up a tree, and left it there. The baby died alone during the night.
