The thing with carpet is that the piss soaks deep in and you basically need to introduce cleaner and then completely remove it afterwards, which even the best wetvacs dont really do. If not you're just mixing piss and cleaner and leaving it there. I have a bissell big green that does a pretty good job, but it doesn't dry the carpets perfectly.

The tool is called a subsurface extraction tool. Maybe it would work if your vac is strong enough, but idk.

You should have used bleach straight away. You can still do it after it's been cleaned and dried but it'll just be a bit harder to remove and remember exactly where it was. Put 4 puppy pads in a tile shape in a corner somewhere in future, if you ever need to (hopefully not). She'll learn pretty quick that's where she needs to go.

Those are going to be hard to come by unless you live near a lot of impulsive rich people. GSDs and Huskies are cheap and plentiful on Craigslist if you're not picky. Breeders occasionally rehome returns and get rid of dogs that are unsuitable for breeding/competition, those are a good deal if you're patient.

After our GSD/Kelpie girl died in 2024, my partner and I are finally keen to adopt a new dog and I found a Heeler/Maltese/Shih Tzu puppy who seems like he'd be perfect. I want another cattle type to train, he wants a little couch dog.

I remember the couple weeks I had to wait before I picked up my dog. I was so excited and nervous for the entire two weeks after I confirmed I wanted the puppy. It was almost all I could think about.

Even as a puppy he was rather aloof for a gsd. Usually more interested in the environment than people. He is still kinda like that, but has become more cuddly as he's gotten older. He's also addicted to cobbing, which is pretty cute and sometimes painful.
I crated mine like that when he was a puppy and he seems to have turned out fine. I did not crate at night. My bedroom was puppy proofed so I just kept him in there with me. Now he just likes napping and chilling in his crate. He gets a little fussy if he doesn't have access to the room with crate, but it's not too big of a deal.
Mine pays almost no attention to screens. Idk if it's a good idea or not really. If it excites him too much I wouldn't do it.

Owning a German shepherd has been interesting. She is like a machine with laser focus. Always waiting for the next task. There really is no "off" switch except sleep. Only tolerates being pet but has to make physical contact at night. She is crazy smart and seems to know exactly what I want her to do. I don't think I'll ever have another type of dog ever again.

Not to toot my own horn, but I have always raised really calm, personable cats and dogs and I'm absolutely certain that it all comes down to respecting an animal as an individual of it's species. It can be hard since a lot of animals have destructive natural instincts/requirements and a lot simply cap out with how far they can learn, which probably fucks up most people/pet relationships desu, but German Shepherds (or the ones that I have known) completely transcend other breeds of dog. They're eerily intelligent, like corvids. If you truly integrate one into your family, it's something else.

My shepard only loves me at an arm's distance. She tolerates petting, but absolutely hates any kind of cuddling.

She's also ten years old now, with one hip shot (not dysplasia, it's an old injury from when she got clipped by a car, and wear-and-tear), and cranky as all hell. Zero patience for stranger dogs. I still love her to bits. Shepard's are probably the breed I'll stick with when I'm ready for another.

Play doesn't really reduce prey drive it's just an outlet for it, but you need to also need teach a strong and reliable off switch. Can definitely tell the lil guy is teething. He was getting so frustrated trying to fall asleep until he chomped down on his kong teddy.

He's taken really well to redirection from chewing furniture and learned 'ta' to let go of toys already.

My main problem with leashes is that they always get tangled unless you have no slack on them. Not too bad woth one leash, but two makes it very difficult. You ever hear about the 3 body problem in physics? Imagine you're one part of that with 2 dogs pulling at different rates as the other 2 bodies. Impossible. Nice drawing btw

If all goes well I'm adopting this little Shorkie guy on Sunday. Apparently his only problems is he marks when left alone(easily fixed with a belly band), and howls and yelps when left in a crate.

So with the crate stuff - do I have to be a bit of a dick and just leave him in the crate until he accepts it? My last dog was the same way and our solution was just to not crate him. They say crate training is good because it gives the dog a place to retreat to when they're overwhelmed or what have you but if he's anything like my last dog he might just not like crates

the only reason he'd howl and yelp in a crate is because what's happening outside seems more interesting or because it feels like a punishment. So if he has toys and treats associated with the crate he should come to like it. If he still whines it's because he doesn't like to be left out on his own, which should be addressed first by giving him downtime in his own space so he learns to occupy his mind alone in positive ways before putting him in the crate

Does anyone have experience with having a baby in a house with a corgi?

We have an untrained corgi (only taught "sit") so he's always wrecking things, is very loud and likes randomly marking around the house. Husband has refused to train him and castrated it when he was 6 so now the peeing habits are stuck forever. He says he will build a fence before the baby is botn to put the dog outside, but is that honestly a good choice to make for a dog that has been indoor his whole life? I honestly don't know what to do and if I'm just being too paranoid about this. I wouldn't mind having a dog with a newborn, this one's just too crazy at times to have a toddler roaming around freely in the house.

He's 11 weeks this Saturday. :3c He's been really good about reactive barking, no howling or growling, but he is very vocal especially when he's playing with his toys. I really don't want to discourage basic vocal communication in any animal, like our cats are super talkative, it's just super cute. I'm guessing it's a Maltese / Shih Tzu thinf because my mum's Maltese X used to do the same thing.

I mean, I just gave him a big cuddle and my hands absolutely smell like puppy piss (and grass) now. It's going to depend on how often your dog goes outside, gets bathed, their habits etc. I can briefly pat my mate's dog on the head and my hand will come back black so of course I'm going to wash them.

Feed her less. Exercise is great, but it's not going to do shit for weight unless you're running her for hours a day. Most foods' feeding guides call for way too much. You've got to find the equilibrium point yourself. With the mid-tier kibble that I feed and guessing that she should be 50-60lbs lean, 2-3 cups a day would be a good starting point. Treats and table scraps are another common source of excess calories. You don't have to cut them out entirely (I share food with my dog all the time), just be mindful of it.
