The way people react to and discuss animals tends to be especially pure (when it's positive or even when it's neutral.) It's an equalizer: people of many different personalities point out/look at horses when driving past them for example. There is seemingly endless novelty in the fact that they're not human but still alive, (variously) conscious and (minimally compared to us) communicative. They're all retarded, they have silly faces and make wierd noises, they live differently from us in beautiful natural environments, and yet our instinctive reaction to seeing them is so deeply ingrained, they're usually not jarring and uncanny to us. Instead, they just have silly faces.
