What can I do about my dog pooping in my house? He is 18 years old, and it seems that when he has to go he just can't hold it. It happens a few times a week at this point. I feed him once a day at 10 AM and give him a dose of gabapentin at 8 PM each night. Sometimes he even poops his bed.It is frustrating for both me and him, and I would appreciate any advice /an/ can offer.
>>5109310Takie him out more, install a doggie door, or train him to go on puppy pads.
>>5109314Thanks for the reply. I don't work, so I'm with him pretty much all the time, and I take him out frequently. I have installed a doggy door, but he will not use it. I hadn't thought of puppy pads. That may be the best solution.
>>5109310He's incontinent. It's like asking, "How can I stop my grandad from having alzheimers?"Get a time machine, lol. There's probably some stuff you can do to help, but he's pooping himself because the dog is geriatric. You're likely just going to have to cope or have him put to sleep.
>>5109334He is profoundly resilient. In a way I can relate to his urgent shitting. When I have to go it hurts my ass until I dump it in the toilet. He doesn't shit every time he needs to. He does go out and shit on the yard.Yeah he has incontenence. It looks like that. But he is otherwise healthy. He has been with me for more than half of my life.Dumping him off to a kill prison is not an option.
>>5109336He probably also has arthritis. The older they get, the more their joints hurt, and the harder it is for them to get up and go outside.
>>5109338He does have arthritis. He is very old, 18.
You're not obligated to solve my issue. Thank you for the replies.
>>5109310hes old as dirt, ready to drop dead at any day now,the only real option is the just take him out more; is there a pattern to when hes popping, otherwise dont let him hold it more than 4 to 6 hours after eating
wtf 18 is dead. i have a 5 year old dog that throws up sometimes i think you should treat it like that. if its frustrating maybe just expect it to happen, so when doesnt poop its a good day, otherwise its a normal day
>>5109390>>5109395He's had two episodes where I thought he was at his end of life, but he fully recovered from both. He had a seizure two years ago, and he had a vestibular episode a few months ago. He just came out of both of them fully intact. He does not even have a head tilt. He has had some visual sensitivity to strong light since his seizure, but that's all. Some dogs live past 20 and it looks to me like my Smokey might make it there. He still has a ton of energy and no issues with mobility. He is not fully incontinent. He doesn't poop his bed. But he seems to get bowel urgency that he can't hold. I often have to pick up his poop when I wake up in the morning. Fortunately my home has all hardwood floors so it's not too much of an issue. But he is housetrained ofc and I think he'll be more comfortable if I can figure a way to get him more regular.
>>5109487hes probably just holding it in too long, again, just take him out to poop a couple hours after eating
>>5109498That's a sound solution. I feed him in the morning, and I take him out frequently. I try to walk him twice a day, but sometimes I can only do it once per day.So I have tried that and it doesn't get the results I'm after. I think training him on puppy pads may be the optimal solution.
>>5109310My dog was the same way. I just simply put puppy pads at the front door and he knew to shit there. No training necessary (it was where he was shitting anyways).
>>5109528That sounds about right. I don't know how well I'd be able to train him anyway. He doesn't hear well anymore. Thanks anon.
>>5109579Does he also shit in the same place everytime or is it just random?
>>5109580It's variable. Sometimes he gets out of his bed and poops right next to it. That's right next to the door. We live in a small house with one door. Sometimes he will poop right behind me while I'm washing dishes. It is kind of on and off. He will go for weeks without pooping in the house but then do it for several nights in a row.
>>5109310Do female dogs look like this when they poop or is it just males?
Why do Americans use so many baby words like poop? Are they afraid Jesus will send them to hell if they say shit?
>>5109665I just don't want to be vulgar while speaking of him because I love him.
>>5109670Alright, sorry
>>5109671no worries man
>>5109665excrement is too annoying to type out?
>>5109336>He has been with me for more than half of my life. Dumping him off to a kill prison is not an option.you have my respect, op.
>>5109336if you do decide to have him put down, pay extra for the vet to come to your house and do it, then his last few moments are in a place of comfort instead of stressed out in a strange place.
>>5109714Yeah, that is the plan. He is not at his end of life yet, though. Euthanasia will only be on the table when he doesn't have a quality of life anymore.
Speaking of shit. Can I really get range banned by getting the captcha wrong enough times?
>>5109756No need to start a fight over something that has been resolved.
>>5109746This is correct
