What arguments could you bring in favor of this? There are other ways to mentally stimulate animals besides having them experience a hunting sequence (that you have made easy for them, barring a few scratches). Add to this the fact that it's mostly done with reptiles who have lower mental stimulation needs. It's marginally less bad when you use live insects, but not by much.
It sucks because it provides a form of socialy acceptable zoosadism.Objectively it is not worse than frozen/thawed. Have no illusions, mass produced live mice are just dumped in a freezer and frozen alive.Even if someone uses CO2:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gc1ay9oXb4Does this look more humane than suffocation by a snake? Maybe? As for insects, there realy isn't any benefit to pre-killing them for the insect.
>>5122939This image isn't just live feeding, it's aislop livefeeding. Truly deranged
>>5122939Do you prefer fresh fruit or frozen fruit?
>>5123019Snakes don't experience "taste" like humans do. Argument invalid.
>>5123019do you prefer a fresh fruit or climbing up a tree and cutting your hands on the branches and leaves and falling and breaking your spine trying to eat something directly off the branches
>>5122939I do not care for the filthy cockroaches dismembered by my pets.
>>5122939as a reptile keeper, I would only live feed a snake if the following conditions were met>it's a wild caught specimen, where it hasn't had the conditioning from birth to take dead food>it wont take dead food after multiple tries and acts like dead food is basically a rock>assist feeding either doesnt work or is otherwise precluded from being a possibility (venomous, etc)>all other alternatives except "the snake starves to death" have been exhaustedThere really is no other reason. They're ambush predators that just make one big desperate grab at a target of opportunity when it's close enough, not hunters that need to chase down and subdue their food in order to feel satisfied. As for live feeding insects, they're not really sophisticated enough to suffer, per se - see a great many of them continuing to carry on like everything is normal when a substantial part of their body is missing. That said even if a feeder insect dies (preferrably through accident, you dont want to feed off one that had some disease or something) most insectivores would probably still eat it, provided they're not in that very particular valley of "the bug needs to be moving like a bug in order for me to know it's a bug" that lies between "I will eat a dead bug because it smells like a bug" and the frog-dominated territory of "I will eat anything that's small enough to fit in my face and will try to eat anything that wont."
>>5122939>ai slop
>>5122942>mass produced live mice are just dumped in a freezer and frozen aliveNo they aren’t. They frozen after they’re killed>Even if someone uses CO2It’s not “even if”. CO2 is the standard practice>Does this look more humane than suffocation by a snake?Yes, because it completely removes the risk posed to the snake which in itself is an ethical consideration
>>5123254> CO2 is the standard practiceYeah, and it’s shit, because it causes the tetrapod drowning reflex. It’s not a humane way to euthanize. Pure nitrogen or carbon monoxide, or other inert gas would be way more humane, but would also be more burdensome on the producer due to more challenging safety requirements.CO2 is detectable by the workers due to the same drowning panic response it induces in the rats, but humane gasses are not, which is why everyone uses CO2 because no one wants to pay for SCBAs and the worker training required to use them.
>>5123310>Yeah, and it’s shit, because it causes the tetrapod drowning reflexI didn’t say it was good. I just said that rats aren’t killed by freezing
>>5122942every live feeder looks like a meth user from alabama
he would have prevented this
