Be honest. How many of you guys here have actually had a chance to pet or ride a horse? When I was growing up, I had a local farm and the owner of the farm was very friendly and he would let me sometimes feed his horse hay.
>>5133414I keep a horse on my property and the missus takes care of him. Somehow she managed to get him for free. Lots of pets, but haven't tried riding him yet.Ill sit in this chair and watch him somedays. It's pretty nice.
>>5133414My ex has horses and she actually was more or less the reason why I started seeing horses with different eyes. Before all that I kinda just acknowledged their existence but otherwise more or less ignored them as being expensive toys for rich people nowadays. Realizing their beauty was mindblowing.
>>5133409for a sec I thought the horse had the fruit of the loom logo in his head
>>5133414I rode one once when I was very young, and I don't really remember anything about it. There are horse pastures all around where I live, and a lot of them border the paths I go on during walks. Unfortunately, the horses never come for pets, probably because the fence is electrified and the pastures are so big that they are usually far away.
do horses think about humans as much as humans think about horses?
>>5133418>>5133419>>5133423These are lovely stories. Horses are such beautiful animals. I'm greatful that in the USA it's technically illegal to have them slaughtered for consumption.
>>5133424Obviously not. I know this because if I were a horse I would be thinking about horses all day.
>>5133414A couple times a year I'm taking carebof my parents' four horses while they are busy. So many scritches and petting were had. Sis also got me up on the giant one time. Was nice, would do again.Once a year a big market fair is going on, which traditionally has a horse market as part of it. I feel like a low key horse whisperer at times, with how much I get nuzzled back by the bored horses, compared to most everyone else.
>>5133414I got to ride my aunt’s horse while it was walking around in an enclosed paddock, it was quite bumpy. My aunt’s horse is almost 20 I think, just a retired show jumping mare, she’s definitely a bit lazy and takes any opportunity to not move if presented it, regardless she is a very lovely milf.
>>5133058No, I know the owner. Even gave a bit of horse advice.
>>5133414I work with them sometimes. It's hard to keep my horse level in check and gradually they see that I am a horse enthusiast. They get it though.
>>5133414ironically I used to mostly just lurk until I actually started horse riding. the funny pictures/gifs/webms definitely helped make up my mind though.at the start I was worried that either the animals or the people would turn out to be more annoying from up close, but they're both pretty chill
Can someone please explain to me what the fucking fuck is happening to the Appleby Horse Fair? I remember watching a couple youtube videos about it years back because they had tons of Gypsy Vanner horses and Shires strolling around but it seems like that horse fair is now a melting pot of the most bizarre looking tanned tons of makeup wearing influencerwhores. Why did they pick a fucking horse fair of all things?!
>>5133598>horses?
>>5133598The SECOND they make it not about the horses then you need to drown the valley in boiling lead.
>>5133602Lmao. Oy vey! Did you know Jews are descendants of gypsies?
>>5133414I don't have any memory of ever doing it, but my hometown had lots of people who kept horses. There was an area near my neighborhood before it got turned into a bunch of houses that apparently had someone raising horses there and people protested that spot getting turned into houses, and I remember our crosswalks used to have a second button higher up for people riding horses and I remember getting driven to school sometimes seeing people walking with horses. I think the only time I got to see a horse up close and maybe got to pet it was at my city's fair where I got to see some ponies

>>5133382I haven't grown up around horses and can't really read their body language too well.Sometimes it's obvious - Mare glares and turns completely around and away from me whenever I approach or try to engage.Other times not as obvious - Horse I know approaches me seeming friendly and relaxed, what do I do now? let it smell my hand? pat it's head?
>>5133681Karmare ponice arrest this mare she neighs in the night
>>5133717Blow gently into the horse nostrils
>>5132794FTFY
>>5133717My procedure usually starts with hand sniff. Less trained horses might try to do more of a breath sniff like they do between each other, getting the muzzle to your face and in that case I let out a gentle deep breath, so he/she has something to work with. At this point I'd try to reach in and give neck scritches, way back where the neck connects with the shoulders/whithers usually works.I am always aware of the horse's movement and don't press it. If he/she moves it's head away and sways away, or steps back, from you, it's a sign of not in the mood. It would just escalate into worse if you walk back into it's personal space to try some more. "Ew it touched me" is also a classic interpretation when you get one touch in before it moves away.Between how snappy and how fluid its movements are, I usually find as good indicators, along with ears. Had sleepy draft horses just not react to anything, hand sniff or neck scritches, in what I could interpret as "I'm big and tired and don't care about you". I've had initially disinterested horses, that still bothered with a sniff, and then melted under scritches. Had the ideal that leans it's head out towards you in fluid movements, ears towards you, curious attention you, that is usually a success with hand sniff and neck scritches. And of course ones that snaps towards you, biting. Ears are surefire immidiate indicator, but body language, how they engage with your presence, tells you more the lingering mood. Between leaning towards you socially, not moving at all and moving away, mixed with laid back ears, I don't find it too hard to read with a bit of sense. If the horse doesn't move it's head closer to engage while you are touching it, you also have to pay attention. Think the boomer getting his shirt fucked gif, head very still, not engaging with you, snappy movements and bites when he keeps trying, just leave it be.
How can you train to lift an entire horse?
>>5133759Might have it stop everything mid-scritches, snapping it's look in some direction with ears perked forward, just keeping still for a bit. No alert, just a an attentive "what the fuck is that". Just give it a few moments to chill, you can look in the same direction with it, like you're in with it's alertness, get horse relatable.Excuse my early morning 5 am train of thought ramble. The short of it is mostly, watch how the horse engages with you, leaning towards vs leaning/stepping away. Watch the ears and fluidity of how it moves, obvious snappy movements, often mixed with throwing its head around, is usually annoyed/stressed out, or if you got a feeding schedule, impatient. And watch the ears. Laid back ears are usually your first cue outside of body movements.Like a language, you can't properly learn one if you don't go out and speak with the natives. Keep in mind how horses interact with each other. Quiet company around each other. How they greet each other with sniffs towards each other. How they nuzzle and scratch each others whithers. Their collective attention in a given direction a sudden noise comes from. Still social and emotional beings that you can level with, just by their own rules.Go pet some horses.Oh and if you get to the mutual scritches parts, that is also fun. Some being more or less enthusiastic, more or less nippy. Had a gorgeous black one that seemed to know how gorgeous it is. Seemed to not want to react, but when you are relaxed and the scritches get good, you can't stop the lip wiggle. Others just get all over you and your face, lip wiggles galore very enthusiastically between claiming your shoulder for the nuzzles and the top of your head. There's no pushing in it, they only push you with their heads if they are itchy and try to use you as a sratching post. Some has nipping with their teeth in their mutual nuzzles and while I'm used to a little horse bite, I'd move away, just as some indirect training. Biting=no scritches.
>>5133763Too much writing. Sorry. I'll just fuck off and end it with, don't pet with your palm if you want to get a reaction. You don't get an itch out of your own body by just running your hand across the spot. They got thicker skin than you too! Get in there with your fingertips! Get in deep with the scritches!Horse nuzzle slut, out.
>>5133689What is that horse going to do to all those innocent children?
Is exfoaliation as bad as it sounds?
>>5133734if you breathe out through your nose like they do you don't have to actively think about the "gently" part, because that's automatic, and your bad breath won't bother them. personally I only do it if they start it and/or put their face in the vicinity, and most will at some point, but that's just my preference of letting them decide small things when they realistically have to be obedient 99% of the time for safety reasons

>>5133763>Just give it a few moments to chill, you can look in the same direction with it, like you're in with it's alertness, get horse relatable.Underrated advice, nearly every time I have done this the horse has immediately relaxed. If two horses assess the dangerous direction and decide it's nothing, then the direction is no longer dangerous, regardless of whether both parties are actually horses.

Try moving back a bit, see if it takes a step closer. Scoot back to the edge see if you can reach the neck. The neck is the friend spot.
