The term "Thanksgiving" itself has been used to commemorate violent events, such as the 1637 Mystic Massacre, where Puritans killed approximately 700 Pequot people, an event that was declared a "day of thanksgiving" by Governor John Winthrop.
The holiday's modern form was established in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War to foster national unity, but it continues to be criticized for celebrating a history of conquest and erasure.

In 2025, a broader "Mass Blackout" protest has emerged, extending beyond Buy Nothing Day. I’m constantly tackling tricky issues of racial representation in my teaching and research. Despite this, I’ve long dreaded the day that I would need to confront one of my kids’ teachers about their Thanksgiving curriculum. Stereotypical and racist portrayals of Native peoples fill U.S. elementary schools each November as students encounter historically-inaccurate portrayals of Native peoples in arts & crafts, books and lessons about a shared Thanksgiving meal, and songs and plays with hand-crafted headdresses and vests.
The foundation of that racist genocide on the land that became America began 401 years ago and it continued relentlessly with such horrors like the one, among thousands of others, shown in the pic related.
Pilgrims ‘thanksgivings’ were actually their traditional way of fasting and praying, not feasting. Records show several celebratory occasions that gave thanks for the massacres of Native population, including in 1637 when Massachusetts Colony Governor John Winthrop declared a day of thanksgiving after volunteers murdered 700 Pequot people. This incident is also often cited as the first official mention of a ‘thanksgiving’ ceremony, and is another commonly cited origin story for Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving disrespects the people already here. Between 1492 and 1600, 90% of the indigenous populations in the Americas had died. That means approx 55 million people perished because of violence and disease. In the years between 1630–1642, about 25,000 further European colonisers arrived while a devastating plague cut the remaining native population again by more than half. Black Friday is an insult to injury on the heels of celebrating genocide.

The winner took the land and either killed the 'native' (not necessarily indigenous Indians) people or enslaved them. 5. Another group shows up. 6. Including amongst the native American Indians whose tribes were constantly at war with each other in the same cycle as above. It wasn't until settlers arrived and, instead of simply taking over the land they rightfully acquired from those warring tribes, they aspired to build a society where people could live without fear of being conquered, killed, or enslaved.Was it perfect? No. But after inception of the Constitution, the US became the only country on the planet that built in a mechanism to end slavery and trust it's people to govern themselves. Fast forward a few years and we did. Inn fact, end slavery in our county. Ensured everyone in our county was free and had the same rights as everyone else. That kind of thing takes time but ultimately, the foundations laid by the founding fathers, succeeded. Now fuck off with your intentional and sophistical bullshit.

Not only does Thanksgiving celebrate genocide, using Native American stereotypes as mascots is offensive. It reduces them to props and catchphrases. Some people profit off this.
