LOVE it. First anime I watched (if you don't count pokemon). This show has some of the most poignant and striking visuals I have ever seen. And we're all secretly in love with Asuka.

Based show and magical how many memes it has given us lol, its not meant to be taken too seriously but it still does a crazy job at pulling you in to its crazy lore. Iconic and nostalgic asf. I first watched it on adult swim circa 2005, feel sorry for those who missed out on that. It's not the same watching it on Netflix, worst version of it.
>>
>>943538872
It's the anime you show to people who think anime is stupid and, unless they live in the shallow end of the intellectual pool, after watching it they go, "Oh, I get it now." Evangelion is a gateway drug.
Grave of the Fireflies, too. I don't know anyone who has ever said a bad thing about that movie after watching it.

i dont know anyone who's had anything good to say about it, unless you count "it made me cry like a bitch" good

I understand Evangelion. It's just not that serious, unless you're actually a NEET who refuses to form human connections or participate in the society that feeds and clothes you. Then, yes, it's deathly significant.
>>

Yes it's one of my favorite anime shows. I hate to admit this, but I used to be a lot like Shinji as teen. Parents worked most of the time and only cared about grades. No friends growing up. Spent most of my time alone with basically no social or emotional support. So I can understand how he struggles with himself and others. In a way, that show helped me through my depressive moods.

I thought the storyline was confusing af, but the philosophical aspects were interesting. Animation, music, and battle scenes were awesome. I like both the original and the Rebuilds.

As for Asuka vs Rei...I like Asuka's character design more, but I like Rei's personality more. Personally I think Kaworu is best partner for Shinji.
>>
I spent my whole life avoiding it thinking “surely it can’t be THAT good”
Finally sat down to watch it + EoE about a month or two ago and still haven’t recovered, still haven’t stopped thinking about it, and probably never will.
It really is THAT good. The annoying people who never shut up about it were, much to my chagrin, absolutely right. I concede.
It’s not my favorite anime by any means, but I’m confident in saying it is absolutely the BEST anime. It’s up there with Lain, Bebop and Space Dandy for me.
It belongs in a place of cherished honor among humanity’s greatest literary achievements like the Iliad, Odyssey, etc.

Also, mommy Misato armpits
>>
I liked the original and End of Evangelion well enough. Anything else was garbage.

After three tries and three decades, it's a franchise that has great parts in each, but each iteration has glaringly bad parts. Hideaki Anno is a master at creating new mistakes each time.
In 10 years or so, someone THAT IS DEFINITELY NOT FUCKING HIDEAKI ANNO should take all the good parts of all three iterations and create one cohesive work, finally.
>>943551839

I remember thinking it was the greatest shit ever when I was a kid. I even blew my mind at Eva 3.0 when it first came out and watched the entire movie through a Japanese camrip. Only after that fucker Anno made everyone wait 12 fucking years for 4.0 and I finally saw it did I finally realize how lame and cringey the entire franchise really was. Despite all that, 3.0 still holds a special place in my heart strangely enough. I thought the premise of Shinji waking up in the future to a more fucked up world where everyone hates him and there are more new crazy Evas/alien technology/flying battleships etc. was darn cool. The soundtrack for that movie was also really good. The character redesigns were also badass, like Gendo going blind and having to use that visor and Misato turning into some crazy battleship commander with a cool red coat and cap and forcing Shinji to wear a bomb on his neck. Yeah.... good times. I was looking for a Eva related image to attach to my post but I have nothing now. Funny how I used to have a shitton of pictures/screencaps/fan-art from the entire series and movies when I was a kid but now, nothing at all.
>>
the author force feeds his philosophy to the watchers, and the moment I'm told that no matter what others do to me I should always retain hope in humanity, and have it sold to me like an absolute law, the author and everything he ever participated on can go fuck off.
After the end of evangelion I'll never watch anything from Anno again.
I don't trust humans, and I don't want a self-absorbed prick to tell me that I'm wrong through animation. he can shove his morals up his ass, not down my throat.

Also, sorry, but is your retort to this "uuuuhh what do you enjoy that's complex"? I don't know, fucking Anna Karenina? In Search of Lost Time? Moby-Dick? But I don't go around talking about it because I don't feel the need to prove my "depth." "Depth" is an (ironically) superficial and insignificant thing, typically obsessed over, in the same way people obsess over any perceived deficiency, by people lacking it. Anyway, please answer my question: what oh-so-profound import does Eva carry? What is it that COMPELS you to love Eva once you've grasped it? Bumping the thread again, because I want an answer.
>>
>>943560289
That wasn't my takeaway. My takeaway was that you should stop lazing around and pretending you're better than society while it puts food in your mouth. I don't think forgiveness was a big part of it, unless the thing that's keeping you from integrating is resentments about perceived mistreatment that pales somewhat in contrast to, again, being fed. Certainly nothing about "faith in humanity."
>>
>>943543606
>>943560977
Also, for the record, the "basic bitch" understanding of "you should participate in society" is actually extremely profound and significant. I'd hazard that it's far more so than whatever cloud of masturbatory interpretations is buzzing around inside your head.
>>
>>943561031
It's the ending. Shinji could've done anything, and he didn't change anything.
just trapped humans in a limbo until everyone realizes others suffer too.
after people put him through he still thinks humanity as it is can be better and it's bullshit.
that's literally just Anno telling us how he went out of depression as if it was some natural law.
no thanks, he should've kept it to himself.

Kek, all this debating. All I know is this anime is awesome, trippy, goes against the norm and does its own thing which I respect. As for what I got out of it is you should just accept people how they are and forgive thier faults as nobody is perfect but we can still get along and enjoy good moments together in life. Also, it is the only anime that I could say helped me get laid after sharing it with a girl who was going through a bad time, her mother was dying of cancer and she was living far away in another city. Didn't even do this on purpose, she heard about the show and I told her I had the boxset and eoe on DVD. Still talk to her today and we are good frens. She's is cutie, petite with a bobcut like rei, but her hair is a little longer now(just like 4.0 rei lol). For all its faults I feel the show has really given me much. It's not meant to be some action flick, it's a show about accepting people and moving on from past traumas and relationships. To open your heart to others, forgive thier faults and accept them for who they are. Hope something good happens to you today anon(s). As much as the world sucks I hope everyone finds someone who can be thier little oasis in a troubled desert land.

Old fuck here, couple of anecdotes. I was 17-18 when Evangelion was first getting released in the US. I was working at a movie theater saving my hard earned dollars to get all 12 VHS copies of the show. My local Suncoast video was taking reservations for volume 11. I give them my cash, then go over the day it’s supposed to be in. Of course they only got like five copies and they didn’t have it when I got, I was so emotionally invested in the show that I had a loud meltdown over it when I’m usually very chill. They weren’t getting any copies for like two weeks so I got a refund and ended up ordering it off a sketchy site called Amazon. Years later I’m working as a grunt at Amazon, I start trying to get friendly with a 20 year old coworker, menhera, wears dark, baggy ass clothes and you can smell her pits standing downwind of her, this is right around the start of covid. We start talking about the first time we ever used Amazon, I tell her about my Evangelion preorder, she’s a fan and understands my melty, and I tell her I ordered it through Amazon, she laughs and tell me she was barely born that same year. I felt awkward after that.

Grave was OK but it was kind of ruined by the continual high pitched whining of the little sister. Got to the point where I was thinking, "just die already" which I don't think was the intended emotion the creators wanted to invoke.
>>
>>943539663
What is GITS. You fags are always throwing around acronyms like everyone should automatically know every anime ever created. I liked Bebop although it took a few episodes to get into it. They did a better job than most dealing with the "you're not getting another season like you expected" revelation. Follow up movie was meh.

you're right, the anime that touches on souls and soulless beings and clones and giant "robots" and "angels" coming to destroymankind, looking at an afterlife, or computers made from brains. totally spaced it's just about the boy and how he doesn't fit in anywhere. your take is honestly the most neet explanation "it reacts with me so that's what it means" ever in the face of anime. out of curiosity which version did you watch? og? directors cuts? ending? death rebirth? true^2? the 4 rebuild movies? but yeah, it's all about needing to participate in society that "feeds and clothes" you lol

You could say the moral of the story is to just escape into another reality kek, like the ending to rebuilds felt like such an easy copout. Shinji just leaves and makes a new world or something, I didn't really understand it. My cousin said it's like they just got lazy at the end. I still love the original series. And yeah, to me the "message" is to try and make connections with people and accept that everyone has their own issues or faults. But that if you don't try you will be worse off alone because you need those people to make life easier and create positive memories. As corny as it sounds, it really is sad when someone has nobody and is all alone in the world.
>>
>>943579091
Answer the fucking question. Is your mindblowing takeaway just a list of touched-upon topics? Is that it? What does it say about them? What new vision does it impart?
