There's a scene in the old graphic novel / comic series that just always hit me, right in the feels. Not sure if it made it into the movie, so very much didn't make it into the movie, then there's the newer movie where, I just can't. See, I really do think that Zoey is a beautiful woman, I think that Bill did a good enough job, but everything about that movie just seemed to get everything about "The Crow" wrong. Whereas in the book and first movie, Eric comes back to avenge his and Shelly's death, in the new one he comes back to save her from death. It just doesn't work the same.

This is the scene I am talking about. Eric has taken down T-Bird's gang. (there is no Top Dollar in the original version, but there is a "Skull Cowboy" that guides Eric) It's all real moody in a way that only a really artsy and/or fartsy film could really do it justice.

He's a revenant, that is, a corpse that has been reanimated by outside forces. He's an avenging spirit and if he lives, or if she lives, then there's simply no point to the story. Well, arguably so anyhow. They're both dead, and in a just world they wouldn't be, but the story of "The Crow" is seated deeply in just such an unjust world.
The writer, James O'Barr created it after some drunk driver struck his gf (fiance, maybe) and she died instantly. The guy had to do like 8 years because the state blamed the alcohol instead of the irresponsible motorist. James saw this as a miscarriage of justice and decided to mope about it for years, until finally writing a love story about revenge and not exactly a zombie.
The Crow: Stairway to Heaven was a Canadian show that elaborates on the story in all the ways that it never needed, Turning the titular "crow" into a native american warrior spirit, and Eric into a plain clothes vigilante. Also it turns the movie villain into a recurring problem since being killed by Eric imbued him with some magic animus and he becomes "The Snake" The show was crazy. His "powers" worked like Ghost Rider, where he's sense injustice and his super persona would appear to right the wrongs.

TDKR is what has defined Batman in the cultural zeitgeist. Long Halloween is a better story, not definitive of the character though. I know he is called "detective" and he's from D.C. Batman low-key hates Superman? TDKR started that. Batman regrets losing a Robin? TDKR. Batman has a thing for Wonder Woman? Also in TDKR, not really started there, but still. Joker feels tied to Batman? TDKR beat Killing Joke by 3 years, beat Death In The Family by almost 13 years.

That's not to say that Long Halloween is bad, but TDKR is the foundation for LH's greatness.
