Actually, we're a democratic republic. We are BOTH a democracy and a republic. The U.S. government is modeled after the Roman Republic, which preceded the Roman Empire.
The Roman Republic had a Senate, a house of Representatives, and a popular vote. They also had the equivalent of a president, and a Judiciary. They switched to the Roman Empire when their equivalent of Trump used the military to take over the government and make it a monarchy. Constantine set up the Roman church, and it switched from a monarchy to a theocracy. It was then that the Roman Empire collapsed and the papacy took over.until Napoleon's general took the pope captive and ended the papacy's power over the rulers of the European nations.

So, again, we are a Democratic Republic.

You said that we are both a democracy and a republic. There is no such thing as a republic that is not a democracy because a republic is a form of democracy. So what you said was somewhat misleading; it's like saying a square is both a square and a rectangle or that a human is both a human and a mammal. Technically true, but it implies these are two separate things that crossover rather than one being a subcategory of another.
