The Internet was a place of anonymous and unregulated communication potentially bringing together people of all kinds from all over the world. Of course there were legitimate racists and the like in their own corners of the Internet back then, but for the most part edgelords spamming nigger were doing it ironically with about as much sincere bigotry as Pewdiepie on a bridge. Things changed dramatically once things went mainstream and the brainworms started taking over.The first change was the death of an unfiltered Internet. Instead of everyone being mashed together, we moved towards seeing people you agree with and blocking people you disagree with. This created insular echo chambers, and instead of isolated retards being laughed off the Internet, the retards instead pool together and feed off each other. To them, their retardation is normal, and they don't see or hear from the outside. Still, for a time, the Internet was still a nice place to be. Any retard on the Internet could see cool new things which were elevated by their peers, and dumb shit (from their perspectives) were banned or downvoted to oblivion.Once things went mainstream we were beyond the point of no return. Now the influences of money, ideology and global power sweep in. We move towards THE ALGORITHM. Specifically, the engagement optimized algorithm which boosts three things above all else: short attention spans, ragebait, and whatever the corrupt people at the top are pushing this week.And now the bots are here and the internet is officially dead. For many years now, most of the shit you see on social media was being shat out by paid Indian socket puppets, so things didn't change too much since 2016, but we can officially sign the death certificate.

Something Awful was influential starting around 2000, it was explicitly non racist but almost everything else was okay. Eventually they had to spin off sites where you could pirate copyrighted music and porn.
