i set up a ventoy USB once but i actually forgot how, maybe the other anon would be able to help
if ventoy doesn't end up working, you can stil burn one of those iso's directly though

did you get balena etcher?

they are two different things
you need something like balena etcher or rufus in order to install ventoy, i think

but i hope it's not a virus...
>>
you need some tool to burn an iso file to a USB drive
debian, dietpi, other linux distros, and ventoy will all be iso files

there might be some video tutorial for rufus, or some other tool than balena etcher
>>
>>23737797
>you need something like balena etcher or rufus in order to install ventoy
i have rufus AND ventoy, thought they did the same. but im a bit confused
>>
>>23737814
>i have rufus AND ventoy, thought they did the same. but im a bit confused
ohh
they do not

rufus, balena etcher, and some other tools are used to burn iso files to USB drives
dietpi, ubuntu, debian, and other linux distros are all iso files

ventoy is a special thing you can burn to a USB drive, it lets you add more than one iso file to the USB drive at a time
like you could put debian and dietpi on the USB drive at the same time, and boot from either one, for example
if you don't use ventoy, you can only have one linux distro burned to the USB drive at a time

you may not want to mess with ventoy right now, if you just want to get the computer set up

oh ok... then i should use rufus or uhm balena? the only reason im asking is because im scared balena is actually a virus ;w;
>>
>>23737833
welll either one SHOULD work, but now i'm spooked too
i think i used balena etcher in the past & it worked? but idk if it's also a virus, kinda spooky

i've found some rufus tutorials and it doesn't look too complicated, if you want to try that again
i can try to answer any questions
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QcpNozmLUc
i can kinda tell what this guy is doing & it looks like a good tutorial/explanation, but idk if it's spanish or portuguese lol

i did some reading & i don't think balena etcher is a virus, people are just being retarded
balena etcher will be much simpler to use, but if you want to be completely safe it's up to you

why does anon need ventoy in the first place? He is just gonna install a os on his pc. the time and confusion are not worth being save a little bit of time reflashing the usb-stick. OP, just flash dietpi directly onto the stuck with balena and be done with it.
>>
>>23737920
somebody suggested ventoy in the previous thread, they argued it was good for beginners since they can hop between distros quicker
but i kinda agree it's a waste of time, unless OP is interested in it
>>
>OP, just flash dietpi directly onto the stuck with balena and be done with it.
this is what i suggest too, udo

interesting

also you probably want the (UEFI) version as that is what most PCs use. the (BIOS/CSM) should also work but its being phased out rn. Do not flash a VM image for use on bare metal.

>>23737934
OP shouldn't be interested. Its a red herring. If he has trouble picking the right image then what is he supposed to do with ventoy which carries hundreds and has install scripts and stuff. He just wants to host minecraft dammit :((((((
>>

>also you probably want the (UEFI) version as that is what most PCs use. the (BIOS/CSM) should also work but its being phased out rn. Do not flash a VM image for use on bare metal.
it's an old PC, it might use either one
i told her to just try both versions

you may be right
i didn't think ventoy was that complicated, though

the problem so far is OP hasn't burned a USB with anything yet
>>
>>23737950
yeah thats probably the right call given it has ddr3 memory. Still i don't recall a PC that old that didn't have UEFI.

gotta sleep soon...

sorry if my replies are too long/confusing
i just want you to have an idea what's going on & have some choice instead of telling you waht to do
but that might be dumb since you just want to have the server running
it gets way easier once linux is installed

oh and while dietpi is technically debian, most of the official documentation dont apply to it. follow the dietpi docs. it manages a lot of stuff on its own so its easier for you but. maybe just watch a youtube tutorial once its running.

still awake..
>>23738217
that's good you're in the bios :D

from there you can go into Boot Device Priority, and just make sure the USB drive is at the highest priority, so that it boots from that
you can also maybe select the USB drive from the Exit tab, and boot into it that way

if you end up with the same grub rescue problem as before, it means you haven't booted into the USB drive properly, and the computer is still trying to use the old thing that was installed

>>23738123
>i dont understand much what he does at the 2:57;w;
not really sure, but if you have the USB drive burned it should be fine, and just try balena etcher if it's too difficult

must sleep for real now sorry
>>
>>23738177
it looks like those things in his screenshot are software for running minecraft servers
those can only be installed/used once linux is working though, they run within an OS
>>
>>23738217

Watch a older guide on installing a OS so you know hot to navigate the bios. The older ones like that are weird.
