Honestly I found that conversation to be genuinely upsetting and that's why I stopped watching for the night. I made a few comments about it in chat, and maybe it's because of my own complexes because I hate my family and have low self esteem, but my only prerequisite for being my friend is that you like me and tolerate my bullshit when I'm crashing out or being a faggot. Maybe it just came out wrong, and was something like a "does altruism actually exist?" argument. I mean I guess my friends are "useful" in the regard that I rely on them for companionship and emotional support. I'm just the type that doesn't like to ask for favors or to be indebted to anyone. Like I remember when I was a kid, I was hanging out at my friend's house. I have a relatively privileged middle class background, and my friend's family were extremely poor. They made dinner when I was there and offered me a plate. I was fucking starving, but I still said "aw, thanks but I'm not hungry." My friend and his mom got really fucking pissed because they knew I hadn't eaten (I spent the night), and the argument became something along the lines of "what's the problem rich boy? You too good for our poor people food?"

It kind of colored my whole outlook on friends and favors for the rest of my life. I'm still reluctant to accept any kind of assistance and if I have no choice but to take it, I make sure to repay it with interest. Never like being in a situation like I get into with my family, where if they ever decide to do anything for me, they make sure as hell to make me feel guilty about it later.

Her idea of helping her friends is showing up to their event for 10 minutes to dance awkwardly in a corner then leaving to go to an event she wanted to go to originally.

Sure she'll buy them gifts randomly and pay for their meals but she does not come across as the type to help a friend out when they need somebody. If there is a benefit to her then she'll be more likely to do it. You could say "no duh it's normal to want an incentive to help" to which I disagree. It's at least somewhat normal to expect some kind of compensation or at least reciprocity with those kinds of friendships. Like the "I get you pizza and beer in exchange for helping me move" is a common arrangement, as is buying someone lunch etc. But those usually come with an understanding that you're to be relied on just as much as you rely on others, and I don't think Binx really is reliable like that.

Like, say I wanted to have some rooms painted. In the past I've done a very similar situation to "helping friends move" where we do a paint party to get multiple rooms painted in less time than doing it solo, and we order pizza and blast music and shoot the shit while doing it and have some drinks when the paint is dry. It's not heavy lifting or anything particularly skill intense, but I still don't think that Binx would help out with something like that. Interesting reading to wake up to this morning, gentlemen. You really had me thinking about the nature of friendships.

While I think Binx's answer wasn't that evil or horrible I do think it slightly exposes:
1. Some of her childhood issues and neuroses, probably
2. Why women's friendships are often such a cluster fuck of garbage and the biological reasons that seem to cause that phenomenon
3. A materialistic view of when a friend is "needed" even if I don't think she actually believes or practices that all the time when push comes to shove

For me, friendship is more about connection and just vibing with a person than being beneficial in a networking or practical sense. I've had friendships that were materially beneficial to me wither away because I never felt much urge to maintain them, and I've got other friendships where I can't rely on them for much at all but I still enjoy my time spent with them and have maintained the connection for decades.

Also, I don't believe in friendship as a kind of one size fits all approach. I've noticed some people view any friendship as a ride or die connection and go all in and have big expectations in return and that's what friendship means to them. For me it's nuanced, someone I'd hang with for a couple hours is still a friend, even if I wouldn't help them move and know they wouldn't prioritize me much.

Anyway, I think we should remember Binx is still a woman and she probably says things she doesn't really back with actions reasonably often. I hope this doesn't sound too incelly, it's just the nature of the beast.
