Quite literally this atomization is precisely the source of much of Americas' plight, for instance, homeless people have families, but to conform, families would rather see their own suffer, or maybe they have mental/substance issues, and it's easier to 'dispose' of them because, again, both these things are heavily demonized and vilified, because there is profit to be made in doing so.
