I used to think that we were alright, and that the US was just a bigger, slightly more advanced version of us, but I've since been disillusioned. Both can be good places to be if you're lucky and wealthy enough to live in decent neighbourhoods and know decent people, but like everywhere else in the world, we're prone to stupidity, solipsism, cruelty, exploitation, and cults of personality, cargo, and cash. I do like seeing the evidence of Hunter S's "High water mark" in the US. They were still doing some godawful shit, but there was a point in time about 75 years ago where there was genuine optimism - a strong enough belief in a glorious future that they tried to reflect as much of it as they could in the present in every possible facet of life.
