The trick is using Anki only as a tool to remind you which words you need to smash into your head in a couple of days. Reverse translation like pic related is a far better strategy than playing around with flashcards. I learned 1900 kanji and over 5000 words in less than 4 months and I can parse eroge and japanese twitter now.

If I read an English novel I still need to look up words especially if it was written more than 60 years ago. But I will still be able to understand everything, the same goes for Japanese. You never stop learning any language, reaching a level where you're comfortable and understand nearly everything is the sweet spot.
